Geocaching Treasure Hunting (1 Viewer)

Does anyone do this? I know its not real treasure, but that is what they call it

My family and I were in Ocean City Maryland last weekend. While we were at dinner, my wife noticed two families going over to what we thought was just a bush in the middle of a median dividing two sides of the road. After dinner we went to see what they were looking at figuring it was a litter of kittens or bird eggs. What we found was this little snapcase holder that had a bunch of little trinkets in it and a log sheet.

After finally getting around to looking at the web site, it appears this is a thing. My kids would probably like it but not sure I want to start their journey until I hear some stories.  Last thing I need is locating one of these things and seeing #### rings, vibrators and Hustler mags

Did it one day in a state park.  At the time they gave you a GPS device (probably just use your phone these days, get off my lawn).  We started down the trail, and discovered the people about 50 yards in front of us were doing the exact same thing, so we followed them to each cache, and saw where exactly they found it.  Pretty lame way to do it so we didn't get hooked.  Found a half dozen of these things in the park, but didn't find any objectionable items.

I've been doing it off an on for about 13 years. I used to do it almost every weekend when I was younger, but now ill sometimes look them up if I'm on vacation and notice one nearby.

We've got some in the nature preserve/park near our house.  Kids had fun with it and one of them had been there a loooong time, which was cool.  Def worth doing a few times.

honestly, what is the point...seems pretty lame?

It is fun for a while but gets repetitive. There are some cool ones out there . For example this guy built some compartment in his fence where you had to pull a hidden string to open the compartment.

I use to play with my gf. We added an extra rule set. Every 5 I found I would get a blue dot. Every 5 she found I would buy her a shirt. Let's just say I didn't spend much money as I destroyed her.

  People have all sorts of hobbies.  At least this one gets you outside and walking around.
I was commenting on following someone else rather than actually trying to use the GPS (such a cliche of the widespread laziness today) .  I actually think this is a very cool activity. My land rover club used to host's these frequently.  We would go out in a remote area and setup the "treasure".  Members will then have to use their 4x4 vehicle and a GPS to find them.  Good wholesome fun for the family.

Got it, I agree with you there.

I think our timing was bad luck.  I don't remember exactly, but I think when you found one, it told you the coordinates to the next one, so you had to find them in the same order.  it was just our luck we started right behind someone else.  If they weren't in front of us, we would have had to at least look around a bit to find the cache, but we didn't know what the deal was until we found the first one, at which point we were invested and just kept going at that point for the exercise and fresh air.

I did this with a friend who is kind of into it.  We made a bridge of sorts, crossed a wide stream/river to eventually get to an island.  Once on the island we found the "treasure" and I left the date stamp off an atm slip to show we found it.  Then we had to get back.  By that time I was done with trying to stay dry, so I waded across the shallow river/stream and had a beer.  It was fun but I won't be downloading any apps to find these things.  Best part was that we got to get away from our SO's for an hour or so.
