Gerald Sensabaugh (1 Viewer)

I think everybody had some element of shock when Darius was released. Why would the Jags cut a vet like Darius when they just used both their 1st and 5th-round picks on safeties who'll both need mentorship?? I think the answer lies in the Jags pleasure level with Sensabaugh.

Sensabaugh is not your ordinary, run-of-the-mill, late-round-pick safety. Sure...he was drafted in the 5th-round of the '05 draft, but there's more than meets the eye with this guy. Sensabaugh is a mad athlete. For one, he holds the NFL combine record for vertical leap (46"). At 6'1", Sensabaugh can come within one inch of jumping and touching his head on a basketball rim. That's some mad ups...and opportunity for INT's and PD's. Sensabaugh used this ability to once block three punts in one game...an NCAA record.

At 218lbs, Sensabaugh can also run a sub-4.50/40. He's also a big hitter. Prior to the '05 draft, Kiper had Sensabaugh ranked as his #3 overall safety. Take a look at this guy...

Can someone contrast him with Gattis and give upsides? I'm a little clueless on both of them.

I believe they're similar players...

It's my understanding both struggle in coverage (heck, they're SS's and not FS's). It's also my understanding that Sensabaugh is a harder hitter and slighly better athlete. If nothing else, Gattis gives the Jags leverage and flexibility when discussing a new contract for Sensabaugh at season's end. Sensabaugh will be a RFA after the '07 season.

I didn't get to see much of Sensabaugh last season, so the Jag homers will hopefully chime in with an eyes-on scouting report, but everything I've read mirrors what WD noted -- very good athlete, questionable football player.

His stat lines after replacing Darius weren't much to get excited about either. As the starting SS, Darius had 39 solos in nine games, Sensabaugh 19 solos in seven. I'd also be a little concerned that Sensabaugh wasn't able to get snaps over Deke Cooper late in his rookie season.

Scouting reports and improved play may not matter anyway. Deon Grant was quoted as saying after joining the Seahawks that the Jag safeties ran a lot of interchangeable zone coverage, which helps explain why the Jaguar safeties haven't had much in the way of IDP value. That's unlikely to change in 2007.

Yeah, I wasn't thrilled with Sensabaugh's stats last year either. However, with Nelson's newly-drafted coverage ability, I think Sensabaugh will have less coverage responsibility. For the past few years, the Jags had to compensate for Grant's lack of speed at the FS position by asking Darius to shy-away from his bread-n-better (run support). With Nelson as a sub-200lb safety, I do not think the Jags will want to risk their top pick on repetitive collisions with 230lb RB's in run support.Jene...do you like Gattis better than Sensabaugh in the long-term?? Just curious.

Sure. For the record, I was thrilled when the Jags took Sensabaugh a few years back and perhaps even more thrilled when they took Gattis this year, for reasons to be explained below.

Here's a good overview of the safeties on the roster. As you can see Sensabaugh is cut in the Darius mold- fantastic hitter, good in run support and a good athlete that is not quite a liability in coverage but is often caught out of position but gets by with his impressive athleticism. On the other hand, Gattis is a more cerebral player that can diagnose the play and get to the football. Gattis is also a fine tackler, as is Sensabaugh but offers more from a coverage standpoint and the two complement each other quite well. Its evident that Nelson will be the FS of the future but IMO, Gattis is a fantastic backup. Of the FS class this year I had him at #4 behind Nelson, Merriweather and Weddle. Many talked about the dropoff in S quality after Weddle but I am sold on Gattis being pretty close. His college production was stellar as noted in this Kirwan article which shows his propensity to make big plays. He flew under the radar a good bit because of him playing for Wake Forest but didnt fall too far in the draft.

What I like is the versatility that the two drafted safeties (Nelson and Gattis) bring with them. Sensabaugh and Gattis are special teams beasts and should help revamp the (punt) return defense that ranked in the bottom five in yards allowed and gave up two costly touchdowns. But Gattis gives the flexibility of a rotation at the Safety position because of his versatility to play both positions. While Sensabaugh should be in on to blitz and against the runs, he may be pulled in favor of Gattis on obvious passing downs. Because Nelson can also fill in as a Corner in dime packages or in case of injury, the secondary now has some much needed flexibility and they can manage with an injury to any position in the secondary without too much of a hit in terms of production. Nelson can be a spot corner, and Gattis would take his FS spot.

And yes I am very excited about this crew and their future prospects look very bright. Growing pains may be in order early in the season but with games against weak passing teams in Tenessee and Atlanta early in the season, the adjustments likely will not cost the Jags too much. Week 3 against Denver will be the first real assessment of these players. Our Secondary is now a young and talented unit. Aside from Terry Cousin, Brian Williams entering his 6th season is the oldest player currently either a starter or a backup.

Not sure. I've been reading some positive things about Sensabaugh and his "stats" in the Pro Football Prospectus suggest he has good two-way talent, if you subscribe to those metrics. Like nshelat1, I was drawn to Gattis' scouting reports, though. Either way, I'm still lukewarm overall on the Jag safeties given their recent history. Things could be different next year if Del Rio doesn't get something done in the playoffs.

Curious: Considering value for this year and nextyear...

How do you guys rate Sensabaugh, vs. Laron Landry vs. Bernie Pollard?

LandryPollardSensabaughIf Landry doesn't get signed over the next 2-3 weeks, I'd most definitely drop him in value for '07. Quite simply, Landry is just a superior all-around talent to Pollard and Sensabaugh.

Mike from Jacksonville: With only four days of camp, have you seen any impression of the two young safeties, Reggie Nelson and Gerald Sensabaugh? Do you think they are really ready to step up and solidify that safety position that was vacated by Grant and Darius?

Vic: Gerald Sensabaugh has been outstanding in training camp so far. Reggie Nelson looks like a guy who’s trying to absorb a lot of information. I see a slight hesitation right now, but that’ll go away. Yes, I think they will step up and solidify the safety position. I think the safety position will be stronger this year than it was last year.
