White Wedding - Billy Idol
(new artist but see below)

zamboni:

Blue Highway - Billy Idol
(new song based on artist being chosen above)
Underrated Idol here...and that album is near perfection. Not the last we'll see of Billy Idol, I guarantee.
White Wedding and a few other big hits on that album typically get the airplay, but I’ve always liked the lesser known Blue Highway. Steve Stevens absolutely shreds here.
White Wedding was on his first album.

Christopher Cross has said that if he had come on the scene two years later -- when MTV was new, ascendant, and influential -- he could never have gotten a foothold in the music business. He didn't feel he had the look for music videos, and that that would have stopped him from getting on the radio.
Neither did Dire Straits but that’s why you get a good director for your video and they can make anyone look cool.
It's all in the headband.

So much goodness here. Love “Teacher”, “Pink Moon”, so many others.

1. Props to OH for Crass. Haven’t thought of them in years.
2. Love “Mad World” but prefer the slower cover version, not sure who the artist is.
3. I like a slightly different version of “Whiskey In the Jar”- more on that later.

Right - misspoke when I said “other” big hits. I meant XX and XXXXX.

Knopfler was the Slick Watts of early MTV.

Fairytale Of New York - The Pogues (feat. Kirsty MacColl)
(duplicate – second vote)

I guess this can't be "my" song since Don Quixote beat me to it yesterday, but I had to have it on my list for a couple of reasons, in addition to its being such a great song (and my favorite Christmas song, too):
- Shane McGowan. There's just no one who epitomizes the British Isles more to me. Speaking of homely people with talent... And there is no more Shane McGowan moment to me than this one: this is my favorite version of "He Ain't Heavy," with all sorts of beautifully talented, countdown-eligible, pretty people singing prettily, and then all of a sudden, at 3:13, Shane McGowan! You really MUST watch. I :lmao: every time.
- Kirsty MacColl. As most of you know, I struggle with female artists. But I love(d) her and wanted her as my sole representative of the ladies here. By the way, if you haven't kept up on her tragic death, it really is an infuriating story.

I think so, most people probably know it and we've already picked our songs. Krista will rightfully mock you if you try to edit your list now.

Pip’s Invitation:

Child In Time - Deep Purple
(new artist)

I cut you all a break by picking a song that only takes up HALF an album side.

We go from a song that sounds a bit like Deep Purple to Deep Purple itself. This tune is absolutely haunting and I have felt that way ever since I first heard it on their 1988 live album Nobody's Perfect. That version made my hair stand on end, and that's with Ian Gillian at diminished vocal capacity. The original version on Deep Purple in Rock is simply astounding (as is its first live release on Made in Japan). This song is the counterargument to anyone who tells you that prog is devoid of emotion.

Tomorrow I will have a song that is the diametric opposite of my first three picks.

I'm guessing @timschochet means the Gary Jules version (See: Donnie Darko). And he's right - that version is so haunting.

Or Demi Lovato.

Have some self respect.

Totally whiffed on Sweet - made me smile seeing them selected. Ballroom Blitz is a fun song.
I've heard this song before, but before 3 minutes ago couldn't tell you anything beyond that. **heart** By far the best new to me so far.
It was 60/40 picking Ballroom Blitz over their other hit.

@Mister CIA - which was it? I was thinking Fox but honestly could have gone either way.

ETA - I have further comments but don't want to spoil anything.

🎧

Listening now. Deep Purple was a whiff for me. I think I saw a few names for the partial eligibility list and crossed them off mentally and forgot to go back to double check which albums were good.

This song could go on for 30mins and I'd be happy. Amazing tune.

Well, I did draft Billy Idol 💪

Well, since tim has given it away now, I'll mention that my earlier teaser about a song that has two different cover versions selected was "Whiskey in the Jar."

There is a slight talent gulf between those two artists. Plus, almost any guitar player can look cool in the right setting. Gentle keyboard playing is another story.

falguy:

Alone Again - Gilbert O'Sullivan
(new artist)

Totally whiffed on this guy. I always thought he was an American, and was on my US list for another song. Then I realized he wasn't American so that was that. But it slipped my mind because I never considered him for this one. Great tune.

The lyrics are so sad

This is the quintessential "mom" song.

I know this because my mom would send my sister and I running for our bedrooms as she sung this in the kitchen ...while massacring the lyrics, of course.

It’s a traditional Irish folk ballad; there’s probably dozens of British versions of it.

Of course in the States the most famous version is by Metallica.
