Giambi Gone For Three Weeks (1 Viewer)

Jason Giambi will be sidelined at least three weeks because of torn tissue in the arch of his left foot.At least the Yankees have a better explanation now for his problems. Since the club plays in National League parks from June 19-24, the earliest we'd expect to see Giambi back in the lineup is June 26 against the Orioles. The Yankees will probably call up Andy Phillips to replace him on the roster and have Melky Cabrera and Josh Phelps pick up at-bats in his place. May. 31 - 5:02 pm et

Phillips has been hitting well in Scranton. Only downside is Giambi usually hits Red Sox pitching well.

According to the Post, Giambi is likely out for the season with a torn plantar fascia tendon. Johnny Damon will replace him at DH and Cabrera will become the full time CF. Kevin Thompson will be called up to replace Giambi on the roster. This is great news for our defense as the ailing Damon was killing us. Hopefully his turn at DH gives him enough rest to be productive at the plate. This team doesnt have much power any more. Wonder if they miss Sheff? Start those Ichiro rumors.

dont take the post as gospel....but I think we are headed that way. He may come back for a week and then shut it down.

Same thing kept S. Stewart out basically all of last year so I don't see how they can say 3 weeks with a straight face.

They can say 3 weeks as they look for a right handed replacement from some other team since they know the Cabrera/Thompson/Phelps triumverate is Harrrible. and contrary to what shady and others are saying this is a huge loss for them. Guys who have OBPs around 400 are rare and even without pounding the ball this year, he was still an above average hitter and taking him out of the middle of that lineup produces a huge hole.ETA: I'd also expect the Teixera rumors to start pretty soon...

Reports later in the day actually said they wouldn't even look at it again for about 3 weeks, then go from there.

Most of the damage he did was early in the year. He was struggling at the plate and really couldn't drive the ball. Giambi has hit .164 over the last month. This is a big hole in the middle of the lineup now especially with Abreu and Matsui not hitting well.ETA: .322/.404/.517 in April.177/.350/.323 in May

Hes a good hitter when healthy but Im tired of him clogging the bases and Im tired of Damon in the field. Cabrera IS a horrible hitter but he is a very good fielder. Maybe we can use him to manufacture some runs like we did last year. But clearly if they want to get back in the race they probably have to trade for a RH hitting 1B. I dont know who would be available. Oh and BTW. Did Bernie ever make the wrong choice by not coming to camp this year.

Wrong choice?Bernie was kicked to the curb and not offered a contract. After all he did for the Yanks they treated him like dirt and showed him no respect.

Thats simply not the case. The Yanks offered him a minor league deal and he refused to sign it. Torre called him for days to ask him to come to camp and he never answered his phone.

Minor league deal? After all he's done for that team? Please.

They chose Doug Mienkiwitrz (sp?) over Bernie.

Bernie goes boom quickly became Bernie goes BYE. Good thing they replaced him with rocket arm Damon. I didn't think someone could have a worse arm than Bernie - I was proven wrong when you watch Damon who looks like he's throwing with the wrong arm. Saying he throws like a girl would be an insult to girls.

:lmao: This falls on Cashman more than it does on Bernie.

Figgins deal????

Makes sense now to manufactor the runs for the Yanks (DH him) with the Angels having Aybar for this season and Woods in the wings, while growing increasingly impatient with him.

I disagree. I think it was more 50/50

I wouldnt mind Figgins. Who would the Yanks have to give up for him?

 LAST YEAR was the year the Yankees gave Bernie his last hurrah.....This year if Bernie wanted to come back it was on him to come to spring training and stay in shape.

They gave Clemens a Hummer when he left. Does he have to give that back on Monday?

I'm curious - what did they give Bernie? I don't remember a farewell tour or gift or anything like that. Just a big "Hit the curb" we're done with you.

I think the Yanks should look to the mets and how they treat their heroes.

Like Tom Seaver as a RedLike ... Do the Mets have other heroes?ETA those are poor examples...each guy was only a Yankee for a few years.

Glad your old enough to remember.Yankees only for a few year that WON and were shown the door rather quickly for the new best FA thing. In Reggie's case - Dave Winfield who never won a damned thing.

:lmao: Bringing in Winfield was a good move. Reggie was old.

How is the Mets treatment of Mike Piazza any different than Bernie Williams?
To be fair, Piazza wasn't a lifelong Met.Hey oooffaa, what hurt more? Cone's perfect game in Pinstripes or Doc Gooden's no-hitter in Pinstripes?
Both hurt. But not as bad as the Yankees celebrating the 2000 WS Victory @ Shea.Times are a changing though as the Yankees are on the way down and the Mets are on the way up.

Every 20 years or so it seems to happen :moneybag:

I've heard Melky's name tossed around in these rumors along with some minor league pitching (heard Cano as well, but that would be foolish)

I can only hope the current Yankee demise lasts for a long long time.

That was more than a victory tour for Bernie last year and he deserved FAR better. He was actually a pretty important contributor during the Matsui/Sheff injury tour. His handling of him was the biggest blunder of the Cashman era, he deserved and frankly, earned, far better treatment, based on his history and last season. To look at it being Phelps, Miekivitz or Myers being what got in the way of Bernie, who would be STARTING right now, its asine.

I'd love to see them reach out and correct this mistake, but I shalln't hold my breath.

As an Orioles fan, I waited a VERY long time for Bernie to retire. He was so clutch and a great piece to the Yankee's successful teams. He was not treated the way I think he deserved and can not blame him one bit for not answering his phone after he was offerred a minor league deals.

For the things Bernie did for his team, I can think of close to 29 other organizations that would have treated him better on the way out.

This is a much better team with Cabrera in CF and Damon at DH. Damon is now starting to hit cuz he could rest his body as DH and Cabrera has been unbelievable playing CF and he has a very good arm. Plus he is now starting to hit as well.

Agreed with the above. Cabrera is slowly falling into the cano territory, of yankees who can never go anywhere..."lifers" if you will. I think they are starting to click now and Giambi served as a BIG log jam in that offense. Taking him out gives them a great transition from the top to the bottom of the order. I am counting on a nice little run here. Maybe 9 out of 10
