Giants D in 06 (1 Viewer)

They are bearing down on Houston for the title of worst D.

I'm quite surprised. Most surprising to me is how they can't get sacks and Coughlin NOT using Kiwi and Lavar like extra pass rush weapons as he spoke of + did in preseason. I don't recall even seeing the rook all that much this year.

Anyone else surprised? Thoughts?

I agree. They are supposed to have the best front 4 in the league, which are supposed to help the DB's. This apparently isn't the case.

I expected more blitz packages from them given the proven rushers they have in Strahan,Osi and Arrington. Lavar looks lost at times. Maybe the bye is just what they needed. Throw caution to the wind and get aggresive, have the guys who know how to rush just pin their ears back and go,mix up the fronts a little,I can't believe it's a lack of talent. We'll see how they come out after the bye against the "Skins at home,I anticipate a different look. That first half in Seattle was a disgrace,HOPEFULLY they bottomed out in that one.

I agree with much of this post. The Defense has seemed to avoid blitz packages and attempted to rely on Osi and Strahan who have not been able to put much presure on the defense. The secondary also looks lost and the complete re-work of the secondary appear to be a failure. The only bright side to the defense is the rush defense looks good.

Arrington will never fully recover from his knee injury, is older and heavier, and will never be as physically capable as he used to be. And he always did have trouble with assignments.

:goodposting: Lavar's a good WLB and nothing else, and even that's in doubt given the status of his knee. The extra pass coverage assignments that are necessary on the strong side as the Sam don't fit with his skill set.

no way Redskin fans don't care for Lavar? Seriously he was supposed to be in an LT type role that seemed perfect for him. In theory, he would wreack havoc on opposing Os that couldn't possibly handle Osi and Strahan and also him coming at them. He really seemed to have found his niche in preseason.Even if you forget about him, it's mind boggling how easily contained Strahan and Osi have been by their opposing O-linemen.

LT didn't play the Sam, but even that's beside the point. Lavar, even when healthy, has never had anything but average pass rush skills.

They never were thought of as having the best front 4. In fact the front 4 contains both their biggest strength (DEs) and their biggest weakness (DTs).Unfortunately, what was thought of as their biggest defensive strength is not living up to expectations. I have confidence that Osi and Strahan will get it going, though, as they have proven that they are very good DEs. They need a little help from the DTs, who stink, and the coaches, who are not using Arrington properly. He is a pass rusher and not a particularly good coverage LB, but he has not been let loose against the QB nearly as much as I thought he would be when he was signed. I must agree with some of the Redskins fans regarding Arrington. He is one-dimensional and isn't the great signing some people thought he was. His knee injury has limited him even more than before, but he has always been pretty one-dimensional. The DBs looked completely lost against SEA last week, but the lack of a pass rush didn't help. Overall, this defense has plenty of holes and has a long way to go until it can be considered a solid unit. I think it's going to take some new players, particularly at DT and CB, in order to take the next step.

Arrington had one, possibly 2 good years with the skins. . Giants got a great one in Pierce but they went to the well once too often. Arrington will come to be hated by Giants fans. He's stupid and will constantly be hampered by one injury or another.

I honestly did not expect them to be as good as some were prognosticating....but I dang sure didn't see them being anywhere near this bad.

What we've seen so far is probably not the true Giant D. Maybe it's still early and they've just run into some top flight offenses and will eventually jell.

Good point. IND, PHI and SEA is a pretty tough start to the season for any defense.

So after the bye week is this DEF worth a roster spot? They were dropped in my league. Surely they play a little better, right?

I grabbed em.I still can't make sense of the miniscule # of sacks they have. Forget yards, I'm only planning on some sacks and eventually QB pressure causing INTs. This should NOT be too much to ask of Osi and gap tooth.

I don't recall even some of the bigger Giants homers saying this, let alone general fans and media people.Their tackles are so weak that the overall defensive line isn't even in the same class as a Carolina, Atlanta, etc (on paper or on production).

They drafted a guy(Duckett?) that was better than expected and curiously cut him. I believe he plays regularly for the niners now. Odd move IMO.
