Giants Fire DC Sheridan (1 Viewer)

Amused to Death

EAST RUTHERFORD, N.J. -- Defensive coordinator Bill Sheridan became the first victim of the New York Giants' collapse in 2009.

Coach Tom Coughlin dismissed the rookie coordinator late Monday afternoon, just hours after saying that Sheridan's future with the team was going to be evaluated in the wake of an 8-8 season that ended with losses in eight of the final 11 games.

The firing also came the same day that co-owner John Mara vowed to make changes after seeing the season end with two embarrassing losses in which the Giants were outscored 85-16.

• **** Jauron, former Bills/Bears coach — He’s been offered this job once before, but turned it down (One person told me he’s actually been offered it and turned it down twice). But according to a source close to Jauron, this time he might be interested. He was Coughlin’s defensive coordinator in Jacksonville from 1995-98.

• Dom Capers, Packers defensive coordinator — He was on Coughlin’s wish list in 2007 when Spagnuolo got the job, but Capers spurned his old boss and took a $2 million-plus salary from Green Bay instead. Could Coughlin make another run at his old Jaguars coordinator (1999-2000)? Maybe. I have no idea if Capers would want to leave the Packers, nor do I have any idea if his contract will be up when the Packers are done. What I do know is Coughlin would have to convince ownership to pay him at least $2 million per season, they might have to consider naming him Coughlin’s eventual successor, and they’d have to switch to a 3-4 defense. Some people seem to think the latter is a possibility. I’m skeptical, unless they change a lot of personnel.

pretty sure he was with NE that yearalso, not happening :bs:

Capers is signed through 2010. No one can interview him unless they are offering a HC job.

Doubt anyone would want to go there anymore either. He's got a 49-81 lifetime record as a HC, and he's 59 years old.

Tom Coughlin is looking for a coordinator who can return the Giants' defense to its former glory. And to do that, he might reach back into the Giants' past.

Pepper Johnson, the former Giants linebacker and current Patriots defensive line coach, is not only a possible candidate, he would also be "very interested" in the job, according to two people familiar with his thinking. He has never been a defensive coordinator, but he has won two Super Bowl rings as a player and three as a Patriots assistant.

Former Bills interim coach Perry Fewell will reportedly interview for the job tomorrow.

Today's paper is saying the Giants are looking at the Jets Bob Sutton who is buddies with Coughlin....

Last year the Jets defgense laid a huge egg down the stretch and laid back and never blitzed Vs some of the most mediocre QB's in the league, letting any Joe Schmoe pick them apart... The difference can be seen this year with an attacking defense and Sutton taking a back seat.. I think Giant fans also want a defense that blitzes coming off the bus.

Jets fans debated wether last year was at the hands of Sutton or Mangini....

Either way, I don't think Sutton is anything special.

ETA.. There's already a 6 page thread on Ganggreen Jets board mocking the Giants for even considering this.

Jauron might try to bring in a pop-warner defense.
Meaning? Why wouldn't Jauron be a great fit as DC? HC no, but DC?

The big question is who will be the Giants HC in two years.
the next head coach of the Giants is Bill Cowher...just a gut feeling, I think he turns down Buffalo b/c he's waiting to coach in the Big Apple..

if Coughlin fails to make postseason next year, he's gone.
