Any of those surgeries is a lot and add em up and it’s time to switch banks brohan.
Keep doing the work and believe better days are ahead. You have a slew of folks pulling for you and those trout will be a little bigger the next time you wet your line, take that to the bank bromigo

You're funny and you should look into working with that like have an SWC advice column where you help people with all of life's little problems and tell them they should zig when they say they might zag and stuff like that but whatever you do know that we think you are a-ok and wish you the very best and you can take that to your local credit union bromigo.

This is how I think I would handle: Concentrate on what you can control, and feed your brain while you are off your feet.

Learn something, take an online class, take up Spanish. Maybe something with goals, you can concentrate on, and feel good about completing.

We are guys, we want to have tasks we finish. We want to fix things, and solve problems. You have some problems you cannot fix as fast as you would like, so focus on other ones. Forward progress in anything will keep your mind in a better spot.

Hang in there brochacho

i am supposed to be at the age where i get to slow down and enjoy the hobbies i want to enjoy mostly hiking and standing in a river waiving a stick
Totally get this. We now have the money to travel, but aren't well enough to do it. It is the major suck.

Repeated crap is just not fun. Take care of yourself.

I have a feeling every piece of advice would involve a bank and taking something there.

If you're not doing it already, check in to meditation. Nothing super elaborate or culty, just you in a quiet space with your breathing a few minutes in the morning. It'll help get your head right when things are getting you down.

Looks like you'll have some Brewers playoffs to occupy your time for a bit here.

Maybe open up your own bank?

Sending positive vibes your way.

I have a feeling @SWC would expect nor want nothing less.

Whatever challenge you face, you got this. Many more trips to the bank in your future!

Hang in there bromigo. Have had the Fred Sanford big one myself and it can mess with your head. And back pain is no joke. But it can turn around. Control what you can. As Jimmy V would say - Don’t give up. Don’t ever give up.

Listen up bro. You’re no brotisserie chicken. You’re a bro amongst boys! It sucks your trip was cancelled. But I’m sure this is merely a bump in the road and you’ll be out on that river in no time. You are LOVED here bro! So take that to the bank!

Am I the only one that reads SWC's posts in Randy Macho Man's voice??

Here are some GREAT words!

“Let me tell you something you already know. The world ain't all sunshine and rainbows. It's a very mean and nasty place and I don't care how tough you are it will beat you to your knees and keep you there permanently if you let it. You, me, or nobody is gonna hit as hard as life. But it ain't about how hard ya hit. It's about how hard you can get hit and keep moving forward. How much you can take and keep moving forward. That's how winning is done!”

Take that to the bank brohan!! You got this!

One day at a time, and appreciate and enjoy the hell out of the good ones, brochacho. Positive thoughts and vibes your way.

brohans i really appreciate the nice words i guess now i feel embarassed because my post comes across as whoa is me and i didnt intend to do that more i was looking for advice from others who have dealt with bodies just flat breaking down and how the deal but all the same i am really humbled by all of the kind words i mean it thanks gang anyhow so they think a disc did something at a level they have already operated on to be specific l45 or l5s1 and now it is impacting the nerve root on the right side which is funny because everything for years has been left sided anyhow i let my guys know i am out for our end of year fishing trip in the driftless which stinks but the trout will be there come spring i go back for a complete mri of my hips and then one of my lumbar spine on thursday so basically i am single handedly keeping the greater milwaukee brewtown medical industry afloat anyhow reading these this morning sort of did exactly what you guys tried to do and picked me up and i appreciate it take that to the bank brohans

well swc'er, that's a tough one to take. as a guy who loves to fish missing a trip really takes a piece out of a guy. as i have gotten older and my neck pain has started to whittle away my capabilities it starts to really weigh on a guy. especially a guy who works hard and plays hard. which i am that type of guy. the way i see it is sometimes those good times were worth what i have to deal with now. and i'm ok with that.

but when i have a good day, it just feels gooooooood. so you have to take the bad to get the good and when you do that's the reward for the pain. that's life. and one of the beautiful things about you is how you handle this. you appreciate all the little things that gives a guy a good day.

so get on the mend, because fishing season ain't over yet. my nephew regularly fishes the harbors up the coast of lake michigan and has great success with lake trout and salmon, and he also goes up the streams and rivers and casts for fish when they start to make their winter runs. he fishes all year, and i plan to go with him a few times this fall and winter (on the warmer days of course). get well and i'm sure i can talk him into cleaning off an extra seat when it's trolling season so the 'ol swc'er doesn't even have to cast all day to get a nice one....

Going through a brutal stretch for sure - I'm sorry. I've struggled with the aging process and have had bad knees and a recurring back issue from sports. I also had a cancer scare, but nothing as debilitating as what you're going through. I'm a very active/hyperactive person so sitting around puts me in a dark place.

When things got me down or I couldn't do everything I wanted, what kept me positive was focusing on moving forward. So that meant scheduling appointments, being an advocate for myself, getting through recovery, and dedicating myself to my PT. Retail therapy also worked well to set goals - so I would research and buy a new TV/sound system/streaming service/dvd collection/games if I was going to be laid up for a month, or research and buy an exercise bike to help with recovery, or new skis or a mountain bike as a future gift that I could strive towards. No need to break the bank on everything and I only focused on things that were specific to my recovery. These little research projects would eat up my sedentary time, give me something to look forward to, and provide motivation to get back to health.

I've had to give up some things (playing soccer and jogging being two of my favorites), but we all have to scale back eventually. Good luck in your recovery!

Sorry to hear that, SWC. I've always loved how positive and funny you are, and it sucks to have you down in the dumps. My family has some genetic flaw that causes back issues, so I've got a little more experience that most (grandmother, father, 4 uncles, and an aunt have all had back surgeries in the past, and my wife burst a vertebra in a ski accident). I've had some disc issues, but no surgery needed so far.

Here's a little that I've learned:
  • It's a lot of hard work. Don't feel bad that it's hard for you. When my wife first came home from the hospital, her "PT" was to walk to the end of our driveway and back (about 60 feet total) with a walker. It would sometimes take us 30 minutes and she would take a 45-minute nap afterwards.
  • Progress is slow but does seem to ramp up. It took about 5 weeks to be able to consistently get to the end of the driveway after she was home. Then another few weeks to make it to the neighbor's driveway. Then 10 or so days to make it to the third driveway. Etc...
  • Setbacks are part of the healing process, expect them and try not to let them destroy your spirits.
  • Speaking of spirits, some days it's going be harder to deal with your emotions than the physical stuff. This is especially true on those setback days.
  • There is no end to "recovery". Treat your back like it's a machine. You'll need to keep doing "maintenance" work on your back for the rest of your life. My wife works out 3 days a week and goes to yoga once a week. My dad swims once or twice a week during old folk's time at the rec center. My grandmother walked 2 miles a day until a few months before she died at 96. Keeping your core strong will take some of the load off of your back.
  • If you're like me or my dad/uncles, losing some of that extra weight will work miracles. Having an extra 20+ pounds on your body puts a lot of extra stress on your back.
  • Most of all, there is light at the end of the tunnel. Some tunnels are so long you can't see the end from the start, but it is there. There are going to be times you think there's no way you'll make it but just keep going and you'll be there before you know it.
I hope this helps, brochaco. You have a lot more people that are rooting for you, and that you can lean on, here than you probably realize. If you need something that we can help with, let us know and I'm positive we can come up with a way to do so. If you ever need a kick in the *** or a pick me up, feel free to reach out.

Hang in there GB. Between you and my wife I think there are a couple of super rich neurosurgeons out there!
Since I've retired I've started to drive privately and Uber. I can give you a ride if you need just reach out and we can discuss it if you have a need.
Take care GB

had been working on a theory that @SWC was, in fact, American Pickers own Frank Fritz

so when i heard Frankie passed, i worried that we'd lost swc, too.
