Giving It Another Try With The One Click Laugh Emoji (1 Viewer)

A couple of months ago, we removed the one-click laugh emoji.

The regular laugh emoji :lmao: stayed and has always been here.

We removed the one-click emoji as people were using it to laugh AT other people. And not with. It was being used as an eye roll, "that's ridiculous" statement to mock posters.

I'm probably too much on the inclusive side of things, but there aren't many things I think kills community faster than people mocking and laughing at each other.

I'd hoped the forum would understand what we tried to do there. Many did not.

The reactions, some private, was some of the most disappointing stuff I've seen on the forum in the 25 years we've had it. I saw people I thought were friends not even give the courtesy of a reply on messages I sent. I had some of the ugliest "you don't have a clue about the forum" stuff I'd ever seen on the forum.

It was super discouraging to try and do something good and have the response be so ugly. But it is what it is.

I told folks I'd give it another look and I did. Effective now, we're going to give the one-click laugh emoji another try.

But I still hate the laughing AT other people thing.

To be clear, I've asked the mods to remove any posters who do this. And this will be completely a judgement call on the moderators. So please don't push it.

I love it if we can use it the way it's meant and genuinely laughing with other posters.

Thanks for being part of the forums.

Interesting.

as someone who’s had someone emoji laugh harass me, the problem isn’t actually the emoji reaction.

The problem is that emoji reactions inexplicably bypass the “ignore user” feature, so people you’ve put on ignore can still harass you by reacting to everything you post, flooding your notifications.

Another potential issue is that bad actors could now use the emoji reaction of someone legitimately finding a post amusing to “swat” you to the mods, since it’s now tied to a punitive action & subject to interpretation.

I’ll probably keep quoting with “laugh reaction” so my intentions are always clear. I don’t like having board banishment tied to an emoji that’s built into the console + interpretation.

Were adults. If someone laughs AT you just shrug it off. I just don't understand how a forum of grown men can be run so sensitively.
I consider myself to be very not sensitive (maybe I'm wrong about that?), but I can totally get someone feeling very irritated when he states what he believes and is outright laughed at for it. As if to say, "no, your belief is not just wrong, it's hilarious how wrong it is." That can be irritating, even to me.

ETA : Of course you're right, though; ideally, something as silly as a little icon on your post, could be shrugged off. It's in the same ballpark as cussing someone out and calling them names.

Everyone's different i guess. It doesn't bother me in the slightest. I couldn't care less what some internet stranger thinks about me. There was one guy who did it all the time on the rotoworld forums. I just blocked him and went on with my life. I still got the notifications but didn't care at all.

I hear you. But I think it's also worthwhile to encourage the kind of things we want. And to discourage the things we don't want. One big problem I see with anonymous forums is the unwelcoming stuff. And that's often bullying or mocking with the laughing at people. So where we can, with the goal of creating a forum where people are cool to each other, I think this kind of thing is worthwhile.

you know, the people who used the lol emoji to bully others were doing it in other ways anyway. so taking it away imo punished the "good" users of it than the bad. just my two cents.

also, I've done it I'm sure where I used the emoji assuming that the poster was joking because the posted content was so far off, but then realize they were being serious. I certainly didn't mean to be an arse, but it happens, context and all. honestly, that feels like too sensitive on a public forum and though I appreciate the cleanliness of this forum compared to quite literally every other forum, this one felt like an overreaction.

I can understand why it’s run that way. What I can’t wrap my head around is people getting butthurt and running to the mods over nothing

Most don't run to the mods. They just leave. I've seen it and it sucks as we lose a potential good poster.

And for sure, lots of people don't mind confrontation and they don't care if other people laugh at them.

But a lot of people are not like that. And I've experienced it where often smart people do. I've seen people post that I knew personally and they get mocked and they realize they need to put up with people taking 1 second to laugh at a take they put thought into. So they just bail. I get it.

[realmenofgenius] In a world filled with laughter, there rises a legend, a master of mirth, a virtuoso of chuckles, a grand wizard of giggles. He is the one, the only, Mr. One Click Laugh Emoji Guy.

With a single tap, a solitary click, he unleashes a torrent of textual hilarity, a digital deluge of comedic chaos. His emoji, a symbol of pure joy, a glyph of unadulterated amusement, cascades forth, inundating threads, flooding forums, and overflowing conversations.

Mr. One Click Laugh Emoji Guy, you are a beacon of light in a sea of seriousness, a ray of sunshine in a world of gloom. You are the life of the party, the soul of the conversation, the king of comedy.

So raise a glass, raise a fist, raise your voice in a chorus of appreciation for Mr. One Click Laugh Emoji Guy, the man who makes us laugh, one click at a time. [/realmenofgenius]

It became ugly in the political forum.

People just sent that instead of actually making a counter point.

Ive never seen that in any other forums .

I find this interesting. I'm curious if you found the laugh reaction particularly worse than if the same person spammed you with the thinking reaction or sad reaction? To me it seems it would be all about the annoyance of having your notifications spammed and not the particular emoji used.

I left for opposite reason. Tired of being treated like a child. Yes I came back last few weeks for fantasy playoffs

Thanks. Good illustration of how it's tough to please everyone. Not sure at all we're doing the right thing. We're just trying to do what we think is best.

Maybe I'm just naive small town folk but until we lost the laugh reaction, and the brouhaha that followed, it never once crossed my mind that it could be used for maladjusted purpose.
We never lost it. You could still post it as a reply, just not as a reaction like thanks, like, sad, thinking etc.
Wasn't really my point, and it was lost as a reaction.

It just never occurred to me that a reaction emoji could be weaponized.

That’s my entire point. It’s that *any* reaction was annoying when it was 50 of them showing up as notifications.

I wasn’t bothered by the type of emoji in the slightest. The emoji isn’t the issue - it’s that it’s used to bypass the ignore feature to continue to harass someone who’s put the other person on ignore.

Instead of taking away an emoji, they should fix that loophole.

My $.02

ETA: also don’t get me wrong - I didn’t even care about the notifications other than that I’d miss authentic notifications from good members I want to interact with. That’s why it’s an issue. My fee fees are fine. lol

Laugh reaction

I'm glad to see it back.

I might be a minority in that I probably rarely wade into contentious threads very often anymore. But even when I did, I can't say I saw any particular positive change from it being gone. People who wanted to be jerks just did it in other ways.

Though as someone who 90% of my posts are memes, jokes, etc, that I take the time to share to try to give others a smile or laugh, having it gone robbed me of feedback. Seeing whether people like, love or laugh emoji at what I post helps me know the audience and tune what I share and what I filter out.

And also, frankly, it's positive feedback that makes me feel good. There are days I'm having a crap day, and check Footballguys and I've got 15 notifications from the last set of posts, which can brighten up my day. Knowing a post was enjoyed enough someone used the laughing emoji over the standard like one, might not be a big thing. But it is still a thing.

Thanks @Joe Bryant

FYI...I wasn't laughing at your post to make fun of you, I was trying to brighten your day!

Maybe an ignorant question, but how was :lmao: more bothersome than 🤔 ?
I feel like that is pretty obvious. The worst interpretation of 🤔 is "what?? ohhhhkay then, that's a strange take..." The worst interpretation of 🤣 is laughing out loud in your face and mocking you for your beliefs, opinions, or feelings.
So it seems like it's all about the receiver interpreting the emoji in a negative way and it really doesn't have anything to do with the actual intent. Just as you guys have listed many different interpretations of a single emoji.

It's what made this whole situation seem so odd to me. Someone just believes that the other guy meant it this way so I am going to get mad over it when it may have not been intended. Just like many things in this world these days, it doesn't actually matter what the intention was. It only matters how someone else wants to interpret what it means.

This is the only site on the internet I visit every day, and I've been reading and posting here for more than 20 years. I don't recall ever seeing an issue with use of the laughing reaction. On the other hand, I also don't understand why anyone got upset over its removal.

I hear you, but I think depending on the specific case, it can be very easy to see where someone is laughing at a joke, and where someone is mocking the poster. The context generally makes it clear. But just like anything, sure there could be unusual cases where the intent was innocent yet the poster interprets it as mocking.

I get laughed at all the time... but then, 99% of the time what I say comes to fruition. It's the risk you take when you give otherworldly advice and suggestions to plebs.

Few things I love more than seeing a user try to downplay my incredible knowledge (sweet and sour sauce guy, usually) with a laughing emoji. And then getting to hit them back with it.

Been here a long time. It's an online community, there will always be jerks who are just looking to get into arguments. 30 years ago I was more likely to be found lurking in FFA but I grew tired of that kind of interaction. So now I come for football only and most times this community is pretty good at behaving in the Shark Pool. The ignore feature has been essential for weeding out those few who only exist to stir the pot.

This was a long way to say, I applaud you bringing back the laugh emoji. If someone is using it in a mean way consistently, ask them to go away. Taking away a feature(that is useful) from the rest of us won't change their intent.

Oh and one more thing, one of the things that I love about this place is this. We tried X, feedback said we should put it back, so we did. Lots of places stick to their guns even if the community says they disagree.
