Glenn Winston - RB (1 Viewer)

Interesting that they added another rookie RB to the active roster... a name to keep in mind for sure, especially after word surfaced they weren't completely enamored with West's preseason. Tate's the lead dog till he breaks down, but then what? Crowell has worlds of talent if he can keep his nose clean, and West was the highest draft pick. But they obviously saw something they liked in Winston to ensure they added him to the 53...

Could be a nice little stash here if Tate goes down. Doesn't look like West has done much.

Had some problems at MSU http://www.freep.com/article/20140502/SPORTS01/305020023/Ex-Michigan-State-RB-Glenn-Winston-hoping-for-a-third-chance-in-NFL-draft
2 things:

1) is that handle a reference to Sedrick?

2) I've heard Dantonio (MSU HC) was instrumental in getting him into Northwood, as well as into the pro day at Eastern Michigan. I thought that was encouraging for his character concerns.

Watched a little of him in preseason in the niners games. Strong fast guy that runs hard but seems to lack any semblance of elusiveness. Raw and makes Andre Williams look like a seasoned technician. ZBS in cleveland though so who knows, we could be clamoring for him in 8 weeks or so.

Ayep.

Browns GM Ray Farmer has been touting him since September.

7. The Browns are excited about the running back position.

"I'd be remiss if I didn't say that everybody's excited about both Terrance West and Isaiah Crowell. We have a a good, young running back, in my mind, in Glenn Winston. Just because he hasn't had a chance to demonstrate to everyone what he's capable of doesn't mean he's not as talented or even moreso than the guys who are currently getting reps in front of them. There's a process to getting an opportunity, and when they get it, both of them have made the most of it. When Glenn gets his, I think the fans will be pleasantly surprised as well."

Cleveland Browns running back Glenn Winston: 'I'm looking to let the chains off the beast'

http://www.cleveland.com/browns/index.ssf/2014/12/cleveland_browns_running_back_35.html
Winston, who was kicked off the Michigan State football teammate for two fights that landed him in jail and ended up at Northwood University in Midland, Mich., is hungrier than most after going undrafted out of college.

"They'll find a true competitor, a teammate, one of the best teammates on this team -- a good athlete that's just been slept on,'' he said. "I would say that I'm physical. Faster than people realize and a better blocker than most. Just a competitor.''

Hands out of the backfield?

"Oh yea, I feel like I've got the best hands on the team,'' he said.

Wait, haven't we heard that somewhere before? Better than safety Tashaun Gipson?

"Better than everybody,'' he said.

At 6-2, 220, Winston looks ready to punish defenders with his rock-solid frame.

"I feel like me and Crowell have sort of the same style,'' he said. "I feel like I've got more speed downfield than he does. He's probably a little bit quicker than I am. But I feel like we've got the same style.''

And West?

"He's probably a little more shifty than I am, but like I said, I'm more of a downhill-type of guy with better speed,'' he said.

Does he pity the guy who has to tackle him the first time out?

"That's the name of the game, man. Just bring your helmet, that's all.
Wow, well that explains why he had just one year at Mich. St. Soph., 60/204/2, that was his major college career - which ended in 2009.

Already had a thread on him:

Yeah -- off field red flags a mile long, but they claimed him off waivers at final cuts and have been talking about him ever since. Go do a Twitter search of his name.

Kinda bummed someone else claimed him off waivers in my dynasty. One of my favorite fliers right now...

The "let the chains off the beast" article is intriguing but may just be an arrogant young man self-promoting. 60 carries for 200 yards his sophomore season at Mich St doesn't make him seem nearly as much like Adrian Peterson as his own mouth does.

Maybe you should watch some of his preseason runs before you cast too much judgement. Not saying I would spout off like that but sometimes football players do this to get themselves amped up.

The main point is, if you like to target guys before potential breakout go get him now. If Crow is out this week, I think we see a healthy dose of Winston, and if he does well the cat is out of the bag. He won't come cheap and there will be multiple teams vying for him.

I'm confused by the Browns RB situation. Wasn't it Crowell with the fumbleitis? Or was it West?

So now they're both dinged up and one might not suit up. Who the heck is getting the lion's share this week?

Crowell

Crowell is going to lead the pack in this game unless his injury is aggravated. If you read between the lines of the comments by the coach and by Crow, he will start the game.

Bojang: I hear you, but I personally put almost no stock in preseason runs by 5th string running backs, who are only up against 5th string defenders.

looking at a few clips on youtube now.

runs hard for sure but he's definitely a between-the-tackles kind of guy. he doesn't have the speed to take it outside at all. could be great in a ZBS, i suppose, and he admits his style of running is downhill.

West has had them lately...and costly.

I looked and looked for the thread here and can't find it. (But I did find Terry Glenn mentioned so go figure)

In summary some liked the guy and thought he had a real shot with the Niners, they got teased eventually etc.

Initially I blew this news off but now I'm extremely curious. End of roster RBs do not hang around this very fluid RB market unless they have some notable skills. Guys that used to be starters like Zac Stacy and Daryl Richardson and Fred Jackson that are now backups...he should have been bumped off the NFL radar. Since he hasn't I'm a bit curious now.

I wanted to re-read why people liked him back then. His draft stuff isn't very favorable, somewhat below average.

I just grabbed my attention that they dropped Turbin and slotted him behind the current top 2 RB's. The thing is Crowell is not very good.

RB w/ highest stuff % Crowell 29% Forsett 26% Lynch 26% McCoy 26% Andrews 26% CJ.Anderson 26% A.Peterson 25% Hillman 25%

Could it be they want test out another 2 down back with Duke?

https://twitter.com/ScottPetrak/status/664126647734575104

#Browns Pettine said RB Glenn Winston has shown "a lot" on practice field. Wants to see if carries over to games.

I guess Forsett, Lynch, Peterson, and McCoy aren't very good either, right? I think this stat speaks more to why Winston isn't worth an add. The Browns can't block.

Crowell is not the equal of the 3 backs behind him on that list. He is a tier 3 RB at best on a losing team that has cut or traded 2 RB's ahead of Winston. They could have safely IR'd him and cut with an injury settlement. They did not do that. Crowell has had chances this year and hasn't really impressed. Is Winston the second coming of Peterson? No. I am just putting out there a player who could have a chance to win a starting RB job. It is the shark pool after all. It is about being ahead of the curve. He is a Cobb'esque dart throw at best.

I just thought it was funny that you offered some stat as proof that Crowell is bad, and most of the other back on the list are pretty good RBs. I'm not some Crowell truther, but I think that he's a decent RB who's in a terrible situation. I watch every MSU game, and I've seen every one of Winston's D1 college carries, and I thought he looked pretty similar in the preseason last year as he did at MSU. I'm pretty confident he's not as good as Crowell, so I'm not interested. I don't fault anyone for taking a shot though.

As Bri mentioned, there's some reason this guy's hung around on an NFL roster when other guys like Montee Ball and Bryce Brown spent huge chunks of the season out of work (or are still out of work). They've held on to Winston for a couple years now...

Sounds like he may get a shot...

"I think it's time to get a peek and see what's there," head coach Mike Pettine said on Tuesday. "He's shown a lot on the practice field -- a lot -- but we have to see if he can carry over to the game."

Hopefully he continues looking AWESOME in practice this week! I really need more FF practice pts this week!

Browns 15 rushing yards. Subtract the 17 yars QB Johnny Manziel scrambled for on broken plays and that comes down to -2 rushing yards from Browns RBs.

Surely he sees the field this week, if he's as impressive as they claim he is on the practice field.

Crowell had -5 yards last week. Over the past month, Crowell has rushed for a grand total of 56 yards. In. A. Month. His YPC over that time is a sweet 1.65.

There's loads of opportunity here for someone to do something... Crowell clearly sucks.

I'll wager $100 that he again sees zero carries this week.

Haha - I'm definitely not betting on the ineptitude of this front office and coaching staff. It's Cleveland...

Just saying, what the hell are they waiting for? What do they have to lose?

My point is simply that Winston has managed to hang around on this roster while a lot of "talented" running backs are now on the streets. Not easy to hang around in the NFL, especially with very a limited ST role.

I actually agree with you. I was just messing around because they're actually on a bye this week.

so basically Crowell is Trent Richardson but cheaper?

Crowell had some decent games last year. I'm not sure what's wrong in CLE right now, but it might affect the running game in general, not just Crowell. I'll be watching, but not running to pick up Winston.

FWIW, someone dropped Crowell in one of my 12-team leagues earlier this week and he hasn't been picked up. I guess people don't expect him to be fantasy relevant and would rather roster handcuffs or guys with some potential upside. Or they don't trust Manziel to keep drives alive.
