I've set up this poll based on the comparisons that were brought up in the Steve Smith hof thread. Vote one from each rank.

Wow, Ward is all over the place. So far the only player with a vote in each catagory. Very polarizing.

That would mean almost all his votes would be in the top and bottom category.

With more votes in things are clearing up. Andre Johnson is the consensus as best of this lot while Ward is viewed as a notch or two below the rest. Meanwhile, unsurprisingly in my opinion, Brown and Smith have little separation in the 2/3 spot.

My take away is Ward better hope he gets in early in his hof eligibility or he may find himself on the outside looking in.

Shocked at all the Andre Johnson love in here. He's got fewer yards, much fewer TD's and receptions than Tim Brown. Now you can argue he still has a few years left, but none of that is a given. At worst, this T Brown and Johnson should be interchangeable or debateable. Ward was a compiler, move the chains reciever. Never was the best reciever on his team. Smith had a couple or three years of prominence, but hardly HOF worthy.

It's a damn shame that Tim B is left out of the HOF. In time, Andre will be a shoo in despite compiling very similar stats, and as of today trails Brown by ~ 40 TDs. Good luck catching Brown.

It's unfair, but two stats stand out with Brown.

1. He never led the league in any stat except receptions - once. That he played during Jerry Rice's career hurts him here.

2. His average of 58.6 yards per game. granted, he played 17 years. But he only exceeded 80 y/g 4 times, over 85 once.

Meanwhile, AJ has led the league in receptions twice, yards twice, and y/g 3 times. He's averaged 82.2 y/g over his career so far.

Assuming his wheels don't fall off in the next two years, he's going to have more yards than Brown, in fewer years.

The game has changed, but Brown seems like the Palmeiro of football. Very good over a long period of time, but never had signature seasons where he stood out.

Great posting. I use Don Sutton as my comparison, but I like Palmeiro too.

The problem is that the bar has been set so low for WRs by including pretty good accumulaters llike Art Monk. Way too many more deserving players like Tim Brown will be left out purely in the #crunch.

For what it's worth, I agree that Tim should have made it into the HoF years ago. I just find it funny that in one break you can't believe people prefer Andre over Brown because Brown has better career numbers, then in the other breath knock Hines Ward as a compiler. Andre Johnson already has almost as many pro bowls as a receiver as Tim Brown (8 vs. 7, though Brown added one more as a returner), and Johnson already has two more first-team AP All Pros (2 vs. 0) and three more total AP All Pros (4 vs. 1).

Brown was fantastic, but he only led the league in a major statistical category once (104 receptions in 1997). Johnson's done it four times (receptions in 2006 and 2008, yards in 2008 and 2009). Brown only finished in the top 3 of a category twice. Johnson has more 1500 yard seasons (3 vs. 0), 1400 yard seasons (4 vs. 1), and 1200 yard seasons (5 vs. 4), despite battling injury issues at times (AJ has a whopping 5 games with over 90 yards per game, compared to none for Brown).

Again, I think Tim Brown was a phenomenal receiver and should have been a Hall of Famer years ago, but I feel pretty comfortable saying Andre Johnson was better.

Not looking to fire up a Ward debate again, but this is just silly. He was easily the best WR in Pittsburgh for the vast majority of his career. And moving the chains is pretty important...
