GM purposely benches his late game players and loses! Help (1 Viewer)

Hi, I’m involved in a $250 Yahoo PRO league. On Sunday November 23rd I notice a 3-8 team without any chance in making the playoff was playing a 8-3 team that was tied for first with record of (8-3). This matchup was very crucial to the league playoff picture. In the morning during the earlier games I notice that the 3-8 team did NOT have ONE starting receiver position filled out so I proceeded to send a private message email to the owner to fill that position. However the GM proceeded to BENCH his other two receivers who were Demaryius Thomas AND Emmanuel Sanders after my request ending up with 3 empty WR position slots.

The combined total of those 2 players that this GM benched purposely after my request to fill his 3rd WR spot was 40 Fantasy Points and he eventually lost his match by ONLY 8 points. This is a clear case of collusion of this GM purposely throwing this important matchup

Has anyone dealt with such issue in Yahoo Pro leagues, what can yahoo do? Is there any chance for yahoo to go back and verify that this GM actually BENCHED these 2 players and it wasn't just oversight and confirm that this GM decide to throw his game and reverse the benching of those 2?

You didn't read the fine print. Yahoo PRO League --> YAHOO Purposely Ripping you Off league.

How do you know he colluded with the GM he was playing? Perhaps he just wanted to send a giant FU to the PIA GM who emailed him to tell him how to manage his squad.

Yeah, unfortunately you cannot legislate the level of care by other owners and when you try, they sometimes say FU.

Well yes technically I'm not sure if he colluded with the other GM, he's the most active GM in the league with 2x as moves as the next GM so it was odd to me he didn't have a 3rd starting WR. But based on everyones response it does look like I'm SOL!!!

I would've been better off letting him play without the 3rd WR. Damn I didn't think there are GM's in the higher end $ Yahoo leagues that are would pull this stuff. Will def be looking to play in other public leagues next year!

Thanks everyone.

No serious advice, but since it's Thanksgiving week, I'm grateful we've never had this issue in 20 years.

Then again I know my league mates. They know I really would walk over to their house and punch them if they tried to tank. OK, not really...but the honor among friends is hard to replicate online no matter what the stakes. Tough situation.

His team, he can do what he chooses with his lineup since he paid for it. He does sound like a loser, though.

Hack into Yahoo's servers and ID this #######. Mail him football cards -- smeared with blood, naturally -- of the guys he benched. Lesson learned.

Can I play against my friends?

No. Currently, all Pro Leagues are public leagues. When you sign up, you will randomly be placed in a league with other Yahoo Fantasy Football Pro League managers. Yahoo will be the commissioner of all Pro Leagues.

Actually Per Yahoo's rules this is not the case. https://help.yahoo.com/kb/fantasy-football/fair-play-sportsmanship-guidelines-sln6215.html

"Above all else, all league-related transactions will be executed with the intent of improving the owner's team and/or its standing within the league.

No owner ...

  • Example: Benching your roster for a Fantasy week to ensure another team's victory."

Unless I knew the guy, I don't think I would have the stones to ask the guy to start a 3rd WR. I might react similarly if I were him especially if I were out of contention to win anything.

Sometimes it's just better to mind your own business (and not play in Yahoo PRO leagues).

Geez why would anyone do this? This was screwed from the get go. In regular leagues you're able to lock teams and change previous lineups. I play in a local league with 12 guys and some guy who was out of it tried to drop all his players and screw up a tight playoff race. I proceeded to kick his ### out, lock his team, handle his final lineups and ridicule him at work in front of anyone I could for several months following it as an example of what would happen if it happened again in the future to leaguemates.

There you go. Talk to Yahoo about reinstating his receivers per league rules.

I on the other hand if I saw a message as a reminder to pickup a WR even if I wasn't in the playoff race and knew that my match could make a big difference for others, I absolutely WOULD.. I don't see why you think it's bad if it's in favor of competition.

so out of spite you would ruin the league, pathetic, you suck.

Let me clarify what I meant. No, I wouldn't do what that guy did, but I could see being annoyed at getting an e-mail from a guy I don't know saying basically "will you please start your 3rd WR so I have a better chance at winning".

If the commissioner sent me that email then I do it in a second because the commissioner has the right to get everyone to play a full lineup. That's his job.

Question: if the guy without the 3rd WR was playing the OP, would the OP have emailed the guy to get him to play another WR?

All you guys who said the OP should've "minded his own business" obviously are the type who would screw his/her league for a laugh or another owner. Your opinion doesn't count. It truly doesn't.

you are probably SOL, but I'd still notify Yahoo! about this guy

Yahoo can implement a simple fix to this by not allowing an owner to field an incomplete starting roster each week.

It can easily be done. All that has to happen is that if a team has an empty spot at a position 30 minutes before kickoff, yahoos algorithm places their highest ranked bench player Into the empty spot automatically and locks the roster. You should email them about it.

Really? Got to be kidding me.

A proactive commish in a strangers league and you blame him? Thank god I don't have this type of owner in the leagues I commish.

Trying to ensure fair play is the JOB of the commish and he should be proud of his efforts. It's the loser owner that's to blame. Not to mention people that would criticise a commish doing their job.

Better yet, have someone place those bloody football cards in his bed and listen for the screaming around 6:00 am the following morning.

I'm glad you are a stand up guy and would do what's best for the league. I guess I view public leagues a little more cynically, and can understand why a #### owner would react the way he did. It was definitely a ridiculous thing that he did. Just for clarification, you are not the commissioner of this league, are you?

I don't thing he said whether he was the commish or not. I totally agree with your statement if the OP was the commish.

One very important fact missing here. How did this 3-8 tanking to 8-3 affect YOUR team/position?

If you were the other 8-3 team (tied for 1st) I can easily see some internet stranger with a gambling problem going sour grapes and throwing in the towel as an FU move to you. If not, then I can easily see some internet stranger with a gambling problem going sour grapes and not really caring what anyone thinks.

The $250 buy-in stated is irrelevant. That's a LOT of money to some... chump change for others.

I thought he was the commish. If not then I retract my statement and in that case I'd have contacted the commish and let him know so the commish could handle it

Unfortunately, since it is a Yahoo PRO league, it may not have a commissioner. Yahoo is the commissioner. Which is why he probably felt the need to contact the guy directly.

Based on what the OP posted about Yahoo's rules, he should be able to get them to fix what the other owner did as it is in clear violation of Yahoo rules.

Ouch. Yeah, that's why I stay out of leagues where I don't know the folks / trust a commish who has real commish power. Just too much room for shady ####. Hell, you have to watch for BS even in friendly leagues.

Yahoo won't do anything. Somehow I protested this trade, and either other GMs weren't paying attention or Yahoo simply decided it was somehow in Team 1's best interest:

Team 1 (9th place): AJ Green, Jordy Nelson

Team 2 (3rd place): Doug Baldwin, John Brown,

Everyone noticed after the transaction and threw a fit. Both GMs have been silent. Yahoo responded by saying that once a trade has been processed they cannot reverse it. I've opened a ticket under several different topics to try to get some attention but I get the same canned response each time.

How does this affect me? Somehow I am in a 6 way tie for first place this morning, it includes Team 2.

I'm been the process of dealing with this issue with Yahoo and will let you guys know what happens as a point of reference in the future if anyone has to unfortunately deal with a similar issue.

Also in response to some stating that I should have not sent a message to the GM trying to "manage his team". The obvious reason for my message was due to the fact that this GM was clearly not making the playoff's and had not paid attention to his team and most likely just forgot and by not picking up a WR in the early games I was only trying to remind him 30 min before the late games in case he forgot to look at the league. It was never to manage him team for him.

so I proceeded to send a private message email to the owner to fill that position. However the GM proceeded to BENCH his other two receivers
The law of unintended consequences in full effect.

The combined total of those 2 players that this GM benched purposely after my request to fill his 3rd WR spot was 40 Fantasy Points and he eventually lost his match by ONLY 8 points.
So, basically, if you would have just left everything alone, and not intervened at all, you wouldn't have an issue on your hands.

Case of comissioner over-reach.

Amazing how easy it is to call the right shots with hindsight on your side.

Is this a dynasty? And did the owner have a 3rd WR on his roster? Because at 3-8 he's thinking next year not a meaningless win. The other 2 WRs are a different story, but there are situations where he is fully in the right leaving a spot open.

This is true.

It is also true that 95% of the comissioner dilemma questions asked in this forum can be correctly answered by do nothing.

In my opinion there is only one big rule in FF: set your lineup every week the best you can. It literally takes 30 seconds on your smartphone. If you don't have the 30 seconds per week, then don't play.

I was in a dynasty league where one owner did not set his lineup and it affected my playoff picture. That was my last year in that league. The league should have a rule about it and every member of the league should be on the same page with the rule.

I don't think you read his post. The owner in question did set his line-up, but he purposely tanked after being poked... probably screwing the OP and thumbing his nose at Yahoo PRO League.

I read his post right, but I don't think I explained my thought clearly. By "the best you can" I meant "the best lineup you can". Intentionally tanking is not really setting your lineup IMO.
