My dad for years had a homemade organizer in the garage. It was a wheel of some kind mounted to the wall, and then he fastened jar lids all the way around it. Filled the jars with various nuts, bolts, toilet seat fasteners, etc. and screwed them into the lids. When he needed something, he'd rotate that jar to the bottom to remove it with no spills.

I can't recall if it was still around when he died a few years ago. Maybe someone in the family still has it.
My dad did something similar. Using baby food jars he hung the jars from 2x4s with screws thru the covers.

She was kidnapped? She just wanted to get away from her lame boyfriend? It was a prank? She's claustrophobic? Theres some info you might have that we definitely don't have.
No clue. She was hysterical and I was just keeping an eye out for police or dude comeback.

Supposedly her boyfriend and she said he said he was going to kill her....

Whether that's hyperbole drama the truth. I really don't know

You have no way of knowing whether he actually intended to try to kill her, but it was definitely the right thing to take her seriously.

Was this in NJ?

So I'll try to give the short version

Driving home from golf tournament. BiL driving, I'm a passenger. Very slow stop and go traffic.

We hear a girl yell help me, and see her head almost out the corner of her passenger window. Thought it was a joke as we see her bent over now and the guy reaching over for her. We pull side by side and screams HELP. BiL rolls window down and asks if she is ok.

Right at that moment she busts open the passenger door of her car and takes off across the road and heading back the way we just came. Guy driving cuts off traffic and pulls into parking lot right where we are.

Brother in-law follows dude takes off, we drive down to check on girl and she's freaked out

Put her in car, call 911 and the state police take their sweet old time getting there.

We were a bit upset the cop took a while and this cop waits for crossing traffic, no lights to pull in. Takes his time walking up to talk, like no big deal
what did you guys shoot in the tournament?

A GB of mine was once married to a complete psychopath who went f'in berserk while they were driving down the freeway here in SoCal. Like she was trying to hit him and yank at the steering wheel to try and run them off the road. He said he's lucky to be alive (and divorced from her). Crazy stuff happens!

grip it like a bird.
  • not too tight that you kill it
  • but tight enough so it doesn't fly away

Fun day of homeownership today. Discovered that there is a been a major leak at the shutoff valve from the main to my house. No idea how long it's been going on. Could be as long as a week. Called every number in the city water directory. All of them went to voicemail except a few with a recording that gave a number for emergencies. The emergency number had a recording saying it wasn't monitored during business hours and to call the main office number. Great.

Drove to the operations office, which is locked and nobody answers the door. Finally got in when an Amazon driver was making a delivery. Found a real live human being that worked there and told him what was going on. He said he'd call someone and I left.

City guy shows up about 30 minutes later and shuts off the water. Once I pumped out the water, figured out that it was actually my shut off valve that had failed. City guy leaves and I dialed about a dozen plumbers before finally finding one that can come out today. Waiting for them now.

I have no idea how long this has been leaking, and because it's at my shut-off valve the city isn't responsible. When I went to buy some beer to wait for the plumber, the owner of my local grocery store told me the same thing had happened to a couple we know, and their water bill was $5,000. Luckily, the city has a program for this and you can ask for a reduction where there is a leak. They reduced it $500. So I have that to look forward to.

I don't have water, but I do have beer. Things could be worse.

Oof.

Finally painting my house next month, installing rain gutters and doing a little tune up on the roof. Well…I’m paying people to do these things.

Where is the shutoff valve?
in my front yard about 5 feet from the street. the way my yard is configured you can't see that part of it from the house.

$1900 to get the water turned back on today.
wtf?
Since the shutoff valve that failed is past the city shutoff, it's mine. They had do dig around it, remove the old one and replace it. With the extra charge for same-day service, new parts, etc. the price was ridiculous, but waiting on it to find a cheaper plumber wasn't on option.
Ugh

It’s because you did well on the Breeders Cup. Everytime I have found money something comes up 😢

I had the same thing happen two months ago. We had had a torrential rain storm and I chalked the water in my basement up to that - it was ponded and there wasn't any apparent running water. It had never happened before, but I figured 8" in 4 hours must have found a way in. I put fans and mops and everything on the standing water and could not get it to dry up.

Finally, I called a remediation company. They brought out mega-heaters and mega-fans. My basement is unfinished, but has insulation on the walls. They took down some of the insulation and called me down there. You could hear water spraying and the block was soaked around the main feed. Couldn't tell if it was in the block or just outside. I called some local plumbers and hired the first one to show.

He told me he'd have to trench my yard up to find out exactly where the break was. From my house to the meter on the street is probably 25'. It was broken probably 3" from the foundation. No clue why or how it happened as it was buried so deep.

Anyway, they tore my yard up and fixed it. Then came back and "fixed" where they trenched. They are good plumbers, but their landscaping skills leave something to be desired

He told me that, if my water bill was nuts, to take his paperwork to the town and they'd give me relief.

Meantime, I had contacted my insurance company and started a claim. They told me that, since it was outside of the house (even though it was on "my" side of the meter and on my property), they wouldn't cover it. I asked the adjuster to come out and look at it. He basically told me to pound sand. F him.

Anyway, I was about $2,700 out of pocket (plus whatever my landscape guy is going to charge me to fix the yard - I'm guessing about $500) to get it fixed. Shocked my water bill didn't go over the minimum, though.

Right? He told me if was IN the house, they'd cover it. I seriously thought about punching a hole in a pipe, but then I sobered up. Luckily, I didn't have much damage other than the insulation on that wall.

I actually had good luck with homeowners

1st time I had a roof that leaked and ruined bathroom walls. Obviously they didn’t cover roof but interior damage they covered like $1500 and I did the work myself

2nd time I had water in the basement through the cinder block walls. Wasn’t covered but then I asked about damage to my garage from a tree branch (actually caused like 6 months prior) and he wrote me for an entire new roof, brush removal, all kinds of random stuff. Got a check for like 2K and blew it in Vegas

My niece is scheduled to be induced on Black Friday. That is a separate discussion that will have to be tabled, because her husband turned up with multiple coronary blockages, including 97% in The Widowmaker. He had quadruple bypass on Monday morning, and was moved out of ICU today.

He's 30 and has run a couple of ultramarathons, and he almost didn't get to meet his son. I hope anyone who experiences chest pain will show as much sense as he did and get checked out.

Yeah. I couldn't tell if it was the one at/inside the house or not. There should be one there too. Good news is it wasn't that one.

Reminds me I need to figure out where that one is at at the new farm because it's probably 200 yards from the house.
