Fight The Power!
It all depends on the situation and location of the cars near you or where you planning to use it. I used ZipCar for several years in Chicago instead of owning. First off, there's a one-time $75 sign up fee that turns into an annual fee. Secondly, the whole program is based on community so there are some factors at play. Cleanliness of the car when you pick it up. They ZipCar crews only go around and clean cars once every week or two. So you can sometimes get a car that has pet hair or was left a mess by a previous driver. The other factor when dealing with the community is making sure drivers with the previous time slot return it on time. I've had one or two instances both in Chicago and New York where I NEEDED the car and the previous driver did not return it or was running late. There are supposedly penalties for this and potential loss of membership if you do it multiple times.krista4 said:Could one of you fancy city-folk explain to me the advantage of using a ZipCar over just renting a car? (I've read the website that claims things like "no long lines!" and other non-convincing arguments.) Serious, not snarky, request - I need to know.
The other thing to consider is length of the reservation. If you are doing short trips less than 5 or 6 hours than it works out pretty good financially. If you are renting it for a day or more than it starts to add up and there are limits on mileage for the day as well unlike rental cars where you normally have unlimited miles.
