Just found out a guy I went to Junior High and HS with and whom I was just reacquatinted with on my old guys lacrosse team killed himself two days ago. He was married and had two middle school aged sons. He had just turned 45.

We weren't close, but I always liked the guy. Seeing him again was one of the nice surprises of joining this team.

Apparently he had battled depression for a long time. It is hard to fathom how somebody who seemed completely relaxed and "normal" could go so such an extreme. His wife even said he mentioned looking forward to our game on Sunday. So weird and horribly tragic.

So, I'm usually pretty pragmatic (overly so, if you ask some of my exes). My mother sent me a birthday card the other day. I noticed that she signed it "love, Mom" but right after the last "m" there was half an "a" and I know she was starting to write "and Dad". My father passed last June and he wasn't really my dad the last two years thanks to dementia. But it broke my heart seeing that stray "a" that, both for my mother and for me.

I miss my dad.

 
Nah, it's good. One of the things about having a loved one drift away over a long period of time is that it's easy not to rip the Band Aid off and face it all at once. The slow decline helped deal with the end, but it deflects dealing with the ultimate end.

It's amazing how hard it can be to adjust to the loss of a loved one. The brain does some weird stuff along the way.

They say Poplar Trees smell like cat urine when you burn it. The power company was kind enough to take down a giant dead poplar in my back yard and even kinder to leave the entire carcass in my backyard. A quick post to Craigslist offering up FREE WOOD and I expect the entire cat urine smelling firewood to be gone by Monday. Lotta K4s and Tanners in Portland, apparently.
