GM's thread about nothing (33 Viewers)

Guys, I'm having some almost-buyer's remorse even before buying this house. I'm starting to think a reasonable person might move to Seattle and rent for a while before just jumping in to yet another home purchase. Yes?
I assumed this was obvious but didn't want to put a damper on your all-in enthusiasm.

That's what we did when we moved out here. Signed a 6 month lease, moved in, looked around various neighborhoods to decide where we wanted to live rather than do the whirlwind weekend, etc. Turned out swimmingly. Cost us at least $40k because of what home prices did and priced us out of any area we would have planned to live in. Ended up having to sign for another 6 months just to find SOMETHING we could buy. That ended well.

Sometimes you just gotta say, "What the ####," make your move.

Agreed. Just rent Jack Sikma's home for a while and see how it goes.

Atlanta was between Nic and Seattle as well.

If the market is hot, you think it will stay hot for at least a year, and you reasonably think you will be there longer than 6 months, then buying could make sense.

Day - drunk again, but this time as a winner. The tide may be turning. In a related story, monkeys may be flying out of my butt.

Well, these posts in succession muddied it a bit for me.

Let me give more info: in addition to my recent tendency to move around (odd in that I was in Chicago for 18 years, though I did move around a lot within the city), I had intended if we stayed in Atlanta to pay cash for a house, which while not necessarily the smartest thing financially had some benefits to me given an unclear job situation. In Seattle given the neighborhoods we were looking at I was going to have to take out a mortgage.

Today I received a huge list of additional mortgage documents I would need, and some of them are very tricky given our moves in 2013 and some of the decisions I made regarding work (including not working for a few months). Also a lot of paperwork I simply don't have (tax records that of course don't exist for Nica properties, copies of checks from when we auctioned our stuff, pay stubs from my job in Memphis) and would be a huge pain in the ### to get.

If we took the time to move, rent for a while, and liquidate some other assets, I could again get in a spot for no mortgage even on a Seattle house in a location I want. It would also allow for less stress on the move--i.e., we could go when we want and not be locked into any timing, and other benefits. It would also, of course, allow for the chance of flakiness on the part of Mr. krista (less likely) or me if we decided we didn't wish to stay and would avoid taking yet another bath on a real estate matter.

On the down side, Mr. krista would have to wait a while in terms of getting his pizza oven. Otherwise I don't see a lot of downside other than obviously if the market goes nuts there in the next year.

Caught up with a buddy that I hadn't seen in a while last night and his Thanksgiving sounded too epic not to share.

Thanksgiving dinner included (names changed to protect the innocent):

My buddy Jason

Jason's mom Karen and dad Bill (still married)

Karen's boyfriend (didn't catch his name)

Jason's ex-girlfriend Hannah

Hannah's new boyfriend Jason

new Jason's parents Sarah and Bill

:lmao:
If I were a betting man, I'd say Karen's boyfriend's name is either Jason or Bill.

HJS now saying he's flattered by the interest, but he's not interested in coaching the Longhorns. Jimmy Sexton next on their candidate list.
You'd think he would be a great recruiter, given how much he's at various high schools.
Yes. My recruiting pipeline is already well-established.
But you're always up for laying more pipe, amiright?
That's just offensive, sir. We're talking about teenage girls here.

mmmmmmmm....teenage girls.....

You need to apply my response to your situation, though. By the end of our year renting, we were anxious to settle into a house here. By the end of a year renting for you, you'll have lived in Seattle, Denver, and Kazakhstan for varying periods of time.

Honestly, it sounds like you already know what you want to do. It seems like the only question to answer is if you love THAT particular house enough to go through the hassle and add some risk to your move.

Definitely don't. In fact that's part of the reason I started to hesitate...at the top of things I wanted in a house were great views. This one doesn't have that, unless you consider a billboard, a gas station, and an apartment building great things to look at.

Renting seems sound to me. Get it? Sound? Seattle SOUNDERS....

Are you seriously rushing to buy a house so you can get a pizza oven?

The suburbs?!?! Who do you think I am? ;)

No, of course not.

Agreed. Just rent Jack Sikma's home for a while and see how it goes.
Sikma is a bench coach for our wolves right now.
Can you ask him where he wants Krista to forward his mail?

I feel Krista should axe the Sikma estate for the Robert Swift meth den. It is (maybe was) in foreclosure
You saw that video, yes? Absolutely disgusting. I've seen Honey Bucket's at a Phish concert that were in better shape/more inviting. Guess it's true what they say....you can take the mutant out of Bakersfield, but you can't take the Bakersfield out of the mutant.

Got my SS gift on New Year's Eve and I'm just now getting around to posting here.

It contained:

Pittsburgh Steelers 'Snug & Sip' set with fleece blanket and large drinking glass

The Oatmeal's "Five Very Good Reasons to Punch a Dolphin in the Mouth" (The Richie Incognito story)

1 Chicken Finger Puppet (For mini crock-pot chicken)

Good Times Season 1 DVD (Dyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyy-no-MITE!)

Flarp! brand Whoopee Cushion (promising "Big Sound")

T-Rex Dixie brand cup (I can't reach the dispenser with my short arms)

Red stress lego brick (Bricks?)

Michael Connelly Book "The Black Ice" - With post-it review "This novel made me a believer" ~ Shuke, FBG Staff Intern

A very sticky, old issue of "Inc." Magazine - date on the spine reads April 1999 complete with "Spring Break Pictorial" "Is There (Oral) Sex After Marriage" and "20 Questions With David Schwimmer" articles

1 Postcard of a clown making a fish balloon with pooping dog photobomb with the inscription "Merry Christmas!!! GMTAN Secret Santa. P & S - I love you"

Will try to get a shot video with finger puppet chicken.

Thanks Santa Zooks!

Congrats YSR!!!! Also, if I get laid tonight it's because of you.

Remember your autocorrect text with your boss when you said "keep me coming" instead of "keep em coming" well while exchanging some friendly borderline flirty texts with a co-worker, I purposely texted "keep me coming" and then quickly followed with "oops, don't get excited, was supposed to be keep 'em coming, damn autocorrect" She replied "lol, whoa for a second I thought you were challenging me" From there many flirty texts filled with sexual innuendo (sp?) were exchanged and we might be meeting up for a drink or 2 tonight.

So here's to you YSR, the GMTAN's pregnant/wine drinking/wingman. I love you.

She never said she didn't want a fixer upper

Krista, you tend to make oddly committed decisions for someone that should be extremely non-committal. I haven't really jumped into the conversation thus far, but I was/am completely flummoxed by your decision to buy a house. Jebus, you were polling the GMTAN not even two months ago about where to live. When you're in that state of mind, you shouldn't even be making plans for next weekend let alone buying a house.

Just embrace the fact that you're currently a nomad, rent a place, and save the long-term decisions for when it actually makes sense to decide.

Are you trying to recreate the Boulevard of Broken Dreams scene?

with you moving around so much, have you thought of this?

Well as a single, broke, unhealthy, 39 year old bartender with a moderate-to-severe drinking problem and severe-to-insane personal issues, I generally refrain from dispensing life advice to anyone other than the bottom of society's barrel.

This one just seems way too obvious though.

I feel like Zooks is not getting enough recognition for his thoughtful GMTAN SS Package amidst all of this Six Sikma and other Naan-sense
