GM's thread about nothing (29 Viewers)

You know how there's all the nerd angst going on about how George Lucas messed around with the Star Wars trilogy again and everybody hates it and nobody is going to buy the new Blu-rays that are out in stores today? Well as someone who knows these things let me tell you they are flying off the shelves, far surpassing expectations.

Freaking nerds.

YSR> I know I'm probably fired for going 20-19 in two weeks of CFB picks, but can you still send me the games anyway? I'd like to continue picking for the heck of it. Thanks.

SLB, what happened with your house offer?
linkShe also wants me to pay $4500 of the closing costs. I e-mailed the realtor a few minutes ago to get an estimate on what the total CC is going to be.

A 1.5 story, ours is a full 2, 5 houses down that isn't nearly as nice as our house sold for 165k just 2 months ago. I'm sticking pretty hard at 175k if she wants the new carpet too.
She came back at $160k, no closing costs. Fish on. :coffee:

My realtor misunderstood her counter-counter :headexplode:. It was $160k plus the $4500, no carpet. That sucks since I have an inside track on rug.Went back at $171.5k plus the $4500. That's lower than I want to go but screw it.

Today in class I had a work-dork moment and told my students the etymology of catamite and callipygian.

75% of the students laughed and loved it.

The other 25% are probably lined up at the chair's office to tell him I'm a pervert.
ahhh, so you're the professor who would have come to our fraternity parties. Had a few of those. Big fan.
Yes and no.I currently teach at a JC so there's no frats.

But when I was a grad student TA I was friendly with the Greeks and made it out to the bars one night on a group's invite (it was the last night of the semester, grades were already in, etc.). It was no where near as cool as you'd think. In fact, it was mostly awkward. I was happily married so the four cute sorority girls from my class basically hovered in a small semi-circle while I did my best to be nice but as NOT INTERESTED as possible. This was excruciating as I'm 90% sure I could have nailed a pair of roommates at the same time (6 and 8 on the offdee scale). Sometimes being a romantic/uxorious guy sucks. And while the frat guys bought me beers and shots (this was nice), after like 40 minutes we'd exhausted most sports talk and had nothing else to say. It got quiet and awkward. So I bailed within an hour, feeling kind of old and creepy.

I never drank with my students again after this, except in a couple rare cases when I bumped into an exstudent at a bar or something.

Oh and that time (same semester) that a student used his fake ID to get into a bar, only to find me by happenchance with two friends in the back polishing off a bottle of Czech absinthe. My two friends were right at the cusp of passing out while I was mad with the rocket fuel, so I embraced the kid and made him drink with me.

He ended up passing out on my couch, puking in my toilet, and my wife made him eggs and bacon in the morning. To this day he says it was the best breakfast he ever had. So much so that if I hadn't been sitting right there eating breakfast next to him, I would have suspected that she blew him or something. So there's that.

Other than that, no drinking with students. Oh except this past summer, when I taught a couple classes of undergrad seniors from a small Latin American country. Bright kids. Older than my usual paint huffers. One babysat my son on my anniversary, and was so nice, my wife invited her and the rest of her crew (most were in my class) back for dinner at the end of the semester. We ended up playing Texas Hold'em and drinking until 1 or 2 in the morning. They posted pics on FB with goofy images covering the beer bottles so I couldn't get in trouble with the school, bless them. They used the night to make fun of me in a "the villagers get to make fun of the king" type of day, and since they'd learned that my middle name is Charles (this is really funny if you know my whole name), they dubbed me "Professor Charlie" and had me wear a Charlie Sheen WINNING! t-shirt all night. I can be seen wearing this shirt -WINNING!- with a hammered grin on my face. Check your FB for access. I'm sure you'll get a good laugh out of it.

I just realized this whole post is structured around me saying I don't drink with students, then suddenly remembering times that I have. Is this called denial?

Nah.

Mashups generally refer to the combining of musical tracks with different lyrical tracks, often from different genresMost of the ones posted here fall into this categoryGirk Talk is a guy (Gregg Gillis) who started making mashups on steroids several years ago (I believe you listened to some Girl Talk at one of the MHs). Basically one of his "songs" is really a meta mashup of like 50 songs and musical tracks all put together in sequence. It's the mashup for the ADD generation, bt he's really good at itHere's an example:http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=6JBAxkZun3s

This. Also include world politics, general medical knowledge and the female orgasm.
So when a FBG's wife sends you a FB request, what's the protocol here?
Walk away from the internet, Bender-style?
The way I understand it, she really digs the cat shirt pics. I find it difficult to deny my fans.
