GM's thread about nothing (23 Viewers)

Was starving after work yesterday...long weekend with a lot of brews, coupled with an early drive back from Seattle to Portland absent any real food. So by 3pm yesterday, I was ready to eat my hand. I drive by a Fudruckers every day on my way home and haven't stopped in once in 3 years. Yesterday, I broke down and went in. Ordered up the 1/2 pound Chipotle BBQ Burger and had an ice cold Rolling Rock. Not sure if it was my hunger or not, but it was the best damn burger I've had in a long time. Loved piling on the fresh iceberg lettuce, the banana peppers and all the pickles I could want. Much much MUCH better than 5 Guys without that obnoxious "1 IN THE DOOR!!!!" bit they do at 5-Guys.

Might just have to get another one of those today as my wife is out of town and nobody made my lunch this morning. :bag:
5-Guys has shtick? I think we're getting one here soon.
They do up here and it's right on par with a Red Robins birthday song in terms of obnoxiousness. You open the door, they all stop what they're doing and scream out "ONE IN THE DOOR!" or "THREE IN THE DOOR". Horrible.Fries suck, too.

I went once, but it was crowded in there and I didn't notice any sort of announcement.

Now I need to see if they do this in Ithaca. We have one. Not a big fast food guy so I've never been there. But if they do this nonsense, the shtick potential is through the roof.

When they open up their store here I'm going to yell back '3 AT THE COUNTER!' or '6 IN THE KITCHEN!'

Next up on our quest for the best cow on a bun was Five Guys Burger and Fries in East Lansing. Yes, I know this is a chain restaurant… despite my own local/anti-corporate/foodie hesitations. It was brought to my attention that we are non-exclusive. If the best burger in Michigan happens to be a at a chain restaurant, so be it. It must be one of the fastest growing restaurants in the nation for some reason.

The restaurant itself is a new addition to the somewhat ever-changing business scene along Grand River Ave, across the street from MSU. When you walk in, someone yells, “ONE IN THE DOOR!” (or however many came in). Walking along the narrow space, the walls are lined with red and white tiles, accented with news clippings and articles about how good Five Guys is. Humble. My expectations rise.
So, it might be that only a few of them do this, but they do it in East Lansing and I assure you they do it in Portland, OR.And that's another thing. I hate the decor. I don't want to read old press clippings. Know what I want to watch? ESPN. Or Sports. Or anything other than articles about how great they are. It's just not a place I want to hang out. Too busy. Too many people milling around, waiting for their food.

I see a bumper sticker today that just says 18.0. I know 13.1 and 26.2, but this is the first I had seen this one.

My daughter and I on the way to school as we pass the donut shop, which is known as "Donut Friday":

Her: Daddy, what's today?

Me: Today is Tuesday.

Her: What can we do to make it Friday??

Me: If I only knew...

Fuddruckers is probably my favorite places to get a burger. The veggie and condiment bar puts it over the top, good quality ingredients from the burger to the bread to the veggies.

I've never heard any shout outs when walking into a 5 guys. Moe's Southwest Grill is pretty prevalent here and they yell "Welcome to Moe's" every time someone walks in the door. Terribly annoying.

Serious spinoff from the Johnnycakes disaster -How much do you all pay your babysitters? We usually get one of my (current or former) students and pay her $10 an hour, $40 min even if we come home early. <- cheapskate?
Going rate in NYC is $15/hr. We've got a couple we're paying $12 for our 4yo. We have one we pay $20 for our 2month old. I don't like that. NOt at all.
Woman at Manhattan Plaza charges us $10 per hour for drop in. We used her all the time to go to movies or run errands or if we're going somewhere nice for dinner. We have two college age girls who come over to sit, and we pay them $15 an hour. I usually tip another $20 if they wear something slutty.I wish.

More annoying than walking through a Home Depot and having 15 employees give you a fake Hi..how are you today?I knew a guy who worked there and he told me they can get written up and fired if they do not say Hi to every person who they come in contact with.

anyone here ever have plantar facititis?

Its absolutely killing me. The pain is nearly intolerable. I have steady supply of percocets from my doc for ongoing chronic back pain and I never take more than 3-4/week. But the foot pain has been so intense I am taking 3-4 a day.

I went and saw a podiatrist a few months back when it was in the bottom of my foot and got a cortisone shot. THat killed the pain in the bottom of my foot, but it moved to the bottom of my Achilles tendon. They will not give another shot in the Achilles area and evidently there is nothing else to do but surgery and I am not willing to do that. I am getting some crutches tomorrow and use them to stay off the foot for a week and see if that can at least get the pain down to a bearable level.

I have many many other things culminating in my life right now and the stress is unbelievable. Stir in the constant pain and I am having a very hard time not being a #### to all those around me.

Thoughts or advice?
Do the stretch shown on this page. You pretty much have to pull your toes back until you think they are going to break. A couple weeks of this stretch ended my years of pain.

Really? None of that nonsense here either.

So it looks like my dog has cancer. Definitely of the liver and it looks like there is another mass in there pushing on the rest of her organs.

How does one know when it is time for euthanasia? She has gotten progressively worse the past couple weeks. According to our vet, dogs typically do not cry/whine from chronic pain. She is barely eating and is always lethargic. Now having trouble getting up the steps it seems.

Also, anyone have experience with preparing children for putting the dog down? Sites I've read said to be completely open and honest about what is going to be done. I even read that you should let the child go if he chooses. This way they can see how peaceful it is and not have fears/fantasies about how horrible it is. Thoughts on this?

I have had two dogs pass away, and when it was time, both dogs started hiding. They knew it was time, and the last thing they could do as a faithful companion was not have you see them die.I actually agree with letting the kids see the euthanasia. It really is very peaceful, they can see the dog go off to sleep and not hurt anymore.

The time to put the dog down is probably now. Mine had bone cancer. I put it off over the holidays and the vet gave her drugs for pain. They ran out just after New Years, and I made the trip. Worst experience I've had... pretty sure about that. My sister went too, which made the crying worse. I don't know how I could've taken my nephew (5 y/o) or even a 10 year old.

Sorry to hear, Shuke.

I have no experience with kids and putting down a pet, but it would seem to me the best bet would be to have them give the dog a treat or something and say goodbye at home and you go to the vet solo. That would be a good last memory I think.

At least at my vet, the "put the pet down" room is a little antiseptic. You can explain what happens after if they ask. Just my two cents.

I just put my dog down who had cancer of the small intestine. Once they stop eating it is definitely time. I highly recommend hiring a vet to come to your home and put your dog down. It's not cheap, but IMO it is so much better for the dog and you. They handle everything for you and it's literally a 15 minute process.

:(I'm sorry to hear this GB. I told my kids the dog died and was in heaven and that was good enough for them. I'm not trying to sugar coat your situation as it took me much longer however to accept it and I'm sure it will be for you too. I'm glad I left them blissfully unaware.ETAThis ended up helping "explain" things to them too when my FIL & Grandfather passed. I really didn't feel like talking about their own mortality at 3-6.

Damn.I think it would depend upon how old the kids are. I would say that if they're older than about 6 they understand (in general) what "death" means. I think you just have to let the kids know that your dog isn't happy, is in pain, and really loving the dog means ending that pain.I have no idea if I would have taken my kids, when they were little, to the vet when it was time to put a dog down. We had to do it just a few months ago and my 16 and 18 year old went with my wife. It was tough on them even at that age but they did get to say goodbye.ETA: I agree...if she's not eating then it is time. Sorry, man.

I told my kids the dog was in heaven
Regular heaven or special dog heaven?
Yeah, just came back to edit that. Thinking back, I just said the dog died and my wife added heaven. I was a little irritated by the heaven part but they seemed to actually understand that and I didn't have to get into a deep life and death discussion with 2 kids that just master not pissing themselves. #### I wish I didn't just think back to that day.

I've thought about the in-home euthanasia, but then what? You have a dead animal in your house and still have to transport it somewhere. My in-laws have a lot of property, so we are probably going to bury her there right after the procedure and create a little memorial.

How old are your kids, shuke?
Son is 6. Daughter is 1, so not concerned about her.
My daughter was six when my dad died. We were upfront with her and didn't throw in the heaven part or anything. "Grandpa is sick and his body is tired etc" She was sad and cried but she actually made US feel better since she kept talking about Halloweens with Grandpa and funny stuff that he did with her. Being upfront with her might not be all that bad.

At that age I don't think I'd bring them to the vet. My kids are a similar age and we had to put both of our cats to sleep (at different times) in 2010. What we did was talk to the kids beforehand about how the cat was sick and in pain and that we would put it to sleep and they wouldn't see it again. The kids got to say goodbye. Then when I got home from the vet, we had a little memorial where we tried to remember stuff about the cat and one of my kids drew a picture of the cat that she taped to her wall. That seemed to work pretty well.

Sorry to hear Shuke, would agree with the others that have already said it's time. I have two boys (6 and 7) and not sure if I would want them to be there. I would definitely be open and honest with them about what is happening with the dog and why. I also agree with having each of them give the dog her favorite treat before you take her if she will eat them. Good luck.

We've already had the talk with him about how she is sick, is not going to get better, and is going to die. I am just wondering if we are supposed to explain to him that we are "putting her to sleep".

The reason I'm hesitant is it's not that straight forward. She stopped eating her food a few weeks ago. She was still eating table scraps that my daughter dropped and I was giving her a bacon treat and milkbone everynight. I also tried a different dry dog food about a week and a half ago, and she ate that for two days then stopped. Again, still eating the other stuff. A couple nights ago, she stopped taking the milkbone after the bacon treat. Yesterday, we gave her a hot dog, which she ate. But today my wife tried giving her one and she didn't want it. So I don't want to rush into doing something, but I don't want to prolong misery either.

Dogs do cry/whine when they are in pain..you know your dog better than anyone. If you see that she is truggling and in discomfort all the time you will know it is time. Give her a couple of days. my Lab stopped eating for almost a week and then she came around.About the kids..let them decide. When we had to put a pet down years ago one of my daughters insisted that she go with me and the other did not want any part of it. They were 11-12 at the time.

I hate to say it, but you really don't want to see her when she takes the next step. She is probably starting to become extremely dehydrated...If it should be that I grow frail and weakAnd pain should keep me from my sleep,Then will you do what must be done,For this -- the last battle -- can't be won.

You will be sad I understand,But don't let grief then stay your hand,For on this day, more than the rest,Your love and friendship must stand the test.

We have had so many happy years,You wouldn't want me to suffer so.When the time comes, please, let me go.

Take me where, to my needs they'll tend,Only, stay with me till the endAnd hold me firm and speak to meUntil my eyes no longer see.

I know in time you will agreeIt is a kindness you do to me.Although my tail its last has waved,From pain and suffering I have been saved.

Don't grieve that it must be youWho has to decide this thing to do;We've been so close -- we two -- these years,Don't let your heart hold any tears.

shuke, I was having to carry my dog up and down the stairs at night for bed. It was excrutiating to watch her walk up them even on pain meds. I scheduled the procedure for the day the meds ran out. I woke up that morning and she ran down the stairs like a puppy. Took her outside to use the bathroom and she seemed like a different dog. I still knew what was wrong inside and that wasn't going to change, so I took the day off and went through with it anyway that afternoon. I still feel good about that decision. She went out on a high note.

It's time.
