Frosty: in your recap of the Gophers/ Fairfield tilt, the movie reference you should have used in the Ahanmisi section is The Notebook, not Wild Things.

Picked up a phenomenal cabernet at costco - Long Meadow Ranch 2007. It was about $32, but drank more like an upper echelon wine. Highly, highly recommended. Pick up a couple to stash or give as xmas gifts to deserving friends and family. I may have to dig up the wine thread...

Also, they had a really nice Ch. Marcad Bordeaux Superior for$9. Most $30 Bordeauxs aren't this good. Buy a case or two. Long-term drink and hold,

Finally, the best organic wine I've ever tasted, Floral de Uncastellun a SPanish garnache/tempranillo that was delightful. I've never had an organic wine that made me take notice and this one did it for $8. I doubt it would cellar more than a year or two, its probably already peaking now.

We rented this from Redbox the other night. Husband claims that it's only just short of Castaway in terms of worst movie ever.

Hat Trick completed.Pretty sure this is the first time I've separately masturbated to different versions of the same woman with a 25 year difference in the 2 versions of her. I don't know if that made any sense, but I feel like I should send her a fan letter and let her know this. I can't imagine there is a greater compliment to a woman than this.

You will not be disappointed. I've seen quite a few Winterhawk games and I can't tell you any of the results, but I can recall some awesome brawls. Remember, these kids are 17, 18, 19 years old. They like to play hockey when they aren't fighting. They also don't make very sound decisions, so things like leaving the bench, using a stick, employing the Iron Claw...those things are all in play here. :thumbup:

Had a great time. Was really a lot of fun. Will definitely go again, and would love for Seattle to get an NHL team. Super interesting, non-stop action. And I didn't even get to see a fight.

Don't the kids of tenure-tracked profs get a free tuition ride? Would they get one in your current position? If the former is true, but not the latter, that give a lot of weight to getting your doc.Also, once you get the doc, would you then have more family time/quality of life/ stability than you do now?

Yes on free tuition. And if I end up in a state school (probable) it's to any campus in the system.Yes. This program is uniquely suited for me in that it allows me to do a creative dissertation. So I can write a novel or collection of short stories instead of literary analysis. If that novel got published, and I had the PhD, I would be a very good app for a tenure-track position that would be both secure and make my family's quality of life very comfortable.

Two other added factors -

Pro

- a followup email from my mentor said I need to get my app in by early next week. Technically, the deadline already passed on the 15th, but she's working things for me. Also, I'm fairly certain she said the funding is practically mine, without actually saying its mine (I'm interpreting what she said as I've scanned the other apps and I think you have a great shot at the funding, plus I'm already pushing for you to get it). So a "semi-serious" offer just got a whole lot more serious.

- this is not a normal scenario. In the early aughts, every PhD student in this program was fully funded. Now? Only 1 or 2 per year get a free ride, and even my mentor said it's insanely competitive. So this may be my one true shot.

Con

- I have a commitment to students for next semester, and I really like these kids. If you recall I lost a couple classes this semester over immigration issues (eh). However, I kept in contact with a lot of those students and many of them have registered for my classes next semester. Some even braved one section's early morning time slot just to be with me. If I ditched on them again I'd feel pretty awful. I might be able to keep one class (financially this would be great), but I'm not sure.

This morning when I first read that email, I was 80% against applying. Now I'm really on the fence. :unsure:

I just think you'll always wonder "what if" if you don't take advantage of this incredible opportunity that has pretty much fallen in your lap.

The Fast and Furious series is a guilty pleasure and this one didn't disappoint. Explosions, fast cars and plenty of unintentional comedy between Vin Diesel, Paul Walker and The Rock. It's like a really long commercial for cars I couldn't buy driving around places I haven't been with hot women I can't get. Green Lantern I couldn't finish. Was mainly watching to see if my 7 year old could watch. I think it would even bore him. Bad Redbox selection.

I have absolutely nothing to do on a Saturday in forever. Wife has the kids. No baseball. Going to a hockey game, but not until tonight.

I feel like I should do something productive, but not going to work.

This is a strange feeling.

Also, when I was a kid you didn't have to say the first 2 digit at all. Everyone just knew to dial 77 or 78 first depending on the town. I didn't really know that numbers had 7 digits until I was like 12.

Hockey is the opposite of football: it looks 100X better live than on TV. Football is 100X better on TV than live. I never follow hockey, but wouldn't hesitate to attend an NHL game if invited. It's always a good time. :thumbup:
