God in the old testament (1 Viewer)

Otis, it is difficult to understand why God does what He does. However, as humans, we need to trust in Him and Jesus. We all try to be in charge but the facts we are not, He is. Trust in Him.

I bet a lot of Nazi's said that about Hitler. Although to be fair, compared to the stuff on that list that Hitler guy was pretty nice.

The obsession in this forum with bashing Christian beliefs is remarkable. You act like you were all repeatedly raped by priests.

You're not sensitive enough about this.

The post is both funny and valid.
I am not sensitive. It is just tiring to see the daily atheist circle-jerk. It lacks humor and it is no more valid than cable news. This is a spun up hit piece which is loose with the truth.

It's funny. And are the stories not right?

I think it is funny how someone thinks these arguments are new or something when God addressed them in the Bible thousands of years ago in the book of Job.

If the Bible is real, then nothing surprises Him and man's mocking, scoffing and ranting probably doesn't change anything.

Calling God names like psychopath and childish is pointless and foolish.

While these types of rants are not surprising, I still find them saddening.

Calling a murder a murder is pointless and childish? Or just when it is about god?

Job sure has to suffer a lot during that analysis. And in the end God's only defense seems to be "I am God and you're not, so shut the #### up! I can do what I want." Pretty lame IMO.

How did God address them in Job. Serious question.
First God kills all of Job's children. Then He gives Job leprosy. Then he shouts at Job, "Where we're you when I created the world?" and Job says, "Whatever, Lord, I still believe in you." so God gives him new kids to replace the old ones.

Be sure to tell Him that.

Not even close and I'm surprised at such an uneducated response from you.

I admit my interpretation is a little crude, but I honestly don't think it's that inaccurate.

The context is not just God and man. If you look at it from the perspective of just God and man, God can look pretty bad. But when the context includes fallen angels and all the havoc they've created with man, it becomes clearer. I used to have a hard time understanding why God would kill the entire world with a flood, until I came to the belief that some of the fallen angels produced their own race of offspring by mating with human women, and it corrupted the world so badly that essentially rebooting the entire world with only 8 people was the most loving thing God could do to save mankind from the sins those fallen angels committed.

Ephesians 6:12King James Version (KJV)
12 For we wrestle not against flesh and blood, but against principalities, against powers, against the rulers of the darkness of this world, against spiritual wickedness in high places.

Time to nuke the whole of Afghanistan because there are some pretty bad folks/bloodlines there, no? And that bad neighborhood in the ghetto down by 4th street? Just wipe the whole thing out.

Didn't really think it was worth one since all you did was parrot the article I already addressed.

So we don't count god killing people as murder or god didn't kill anyone?

So we don't count god killing people as murder or god didn't kill anyone?
Or it was just a story meant to teach us a lesson about the value of killing people?

Also, it's a poem. Pretty sure most Christian's are in the 'Job was a real person' camp. Wisdom literature dealing with the question of Theodicy.

Pretty sure God didn't write the Bible Himself nor was it put on his desk to edit and sign off on so im not sure how He should be judged by what imperfect human beings with limited understanding wrote about Him and his interactions with this world.

Aaron Jastrow: My Thereseinstadt friends, I have no heart tonight for a lecture. I will put aside my professorial notes. They are neat, bloodless, and irrelevant. My topic was to be the book of Job. That's what I'll talk about, but not as a professor. As one of you: the Theresienstadt Jew. Satan said to God--do you remember?--"Natually Job is upright. seven sons, three daughters, the wealthiest man in the land of Uz. Why not be upright? See how it pays. Job is not upright. He's just a smart Jew," sneers Satan. "But take away his rewards, and see how upright he will remain." So God allows Satan to put Job through every trail but death. All his children die. All his wealth is wiped out. A horrible sickness strikes him. And so, reduced by a whim of God, to a broken, loathsome, plundered skeleton, covered with sores, Job sits on the ash heap. "Naked I came from the womb," he says. "Naked will I return. God has given. God has taken away. Blessed be God's name." Job has stood up to Satan's test. The oldest problem in human existence: senseless evil. But no comes a worse trial, a worse test. Job's comforters come. Passionately, they urge him to admit that since God is just, Job must have committed some terrible sin. "Search you deeds. Repent. Confess." But Job fights back. "I have not sinned. I will submit to the divine will, but not to pious platitudes." And so, in the depths of his most terrible hour, Job rises to stand toe-to-toe with God, and demand an answer to the great ultimate human mystery of senseless evil. "Why do you do this to me?" Well, Job gets his answer. An answer that answers nothing. God himself speaks to Job at last out of a roaring storm. "Who are you to call me to account? Can you hope to understand how or why I do anything? My universe is vast beyond human conception. Where were you when I laid the foundations of the world, when the morning stars sang together, and all the suns of heaven shouted for joy? Can you comprehend the infinite mysteries of existence? You, a poor worm who lives for a few moments and dies?" An answer that answers nothing and everything. The roaring storm has declared only that God's reason is hidden, beyond Job, beyond the comforters. The universe doesn't always make sense. There is no guarantee of good fortune for good behavior. Crazy injustice is part of the enigma of the world and of our brief lives. Job humbles himself, is more than satisfied, and falls upon his face. My Thereisenstadt friends, this is the thought I would leave you with tonight. Who is it in history, who suffers ordeal after ordeal, plundering after plundering, massacre after massacre, century after century, yes looks up at the sky, sometimes with dying eyes, and cries, "The Lord our God, the Lord is one?" Who until then will leave the fearful mystery of undeserved suffering to God, and praise his name, saying, "The Lord has given. The Lord has taken away. Blessed be the name of the Lord?" Nobody, my friends, but that loathesome, bereaved skeleton on the ash heap. Nobody but Job. He is the only answer, if there is one. The satanic challenge to an Almighty God. Job. The stinking Jew.

I believe God did not do it, he allowed Satan to.
I fail to see how that makes it any better.

If the God of the Old Testament exists, He knows everything that happens, or will happen. He is responsible for everything that happens. He created Satan and everything Satan does serves the will of God.

You assume much. So no free will? What's the point of anything then?

I don't know. Frankly, I have never understood how the notion of of an omnipotent God meshes with the idea of free will. I have asked religious people throughout my life to explain it to me and I have yet to hear a satisfactory answer.

Im not deeply religious nor a biblical scholar by any means. I guess I just like to think of the big guy as a loving creator who gave us the gift of life. Its up to each of us to make the most of that gift.

Don't know what you're looking for but I believe God has the (really) long term perspective. Some people suffering today might make the world a better place later. I don't know, don't pretend to know and don't need to know.

I also don't believe in a literal interpretation of the Old Testament, so take that FWIW.
