Going Pink? (1 Viewer)

consider the $$ spent to manufacture all of the pink items... cleats, hats, goal post guard, wristbands....

am i stupid to think that maybe they could have given the money spent on the pink stuff to the cancer research instead?

of course i support the cause, and i think it's great the NFL does too. but it must have cost a small fortune to get Nike/Reebok/whoever to make the pink shoes, hats, etc.

i just think it's counter-productive to spend the money on the pink stuff...

You probably didn't major in marketing, I'm guessing.

the shark move is to sell the pink stuff and use the $$ for cancer research.

Who wants to buy used shoes etc.?

If they werent wearing the pink and just donated the money you wouldnt have made this post. Without this post, this community wouldnt be talking about it and breast cancer awareness. Now multiply that by millions.

That's why they wear the pink versus just donating the money.

never occured to me they may auction the game worn stuff, good point.

not trying to be an a**, just thinking it's a lot of wasted money that could go to good use.

and no i didn't major in marketing thanks for asking

Plus, they are raising awareness on a big time national scale, can't put a price on that.

i made a donation to ACS this year myself

It is Breast Cancer AWARENESS month. Not Fund-raising Month. All of these things create AWARENESS.

Not counter-productive. Creating awareness to get screened in time to catch it early saves lives.

"A portion of the proceeds from the sale of this product will be donated to support the fight against breast cancer."

cool, very nice

Breast cancer is second only to AIDS, maybe, in terms of its advocacy profile. I'd rather see the NFL raise awareness of something less fashionable, like colon cancer or autism or something.

thanks for the link azgroover, very interesting
no problem. anytime something becomes as profitable as breast cancer awareness campaigns, you know some companies are going to unscrupulously take advantage of the fad.
I have to agree with this. There are private companies working their asses off to try and come up with something. Without any donations. It's a business thing. And that's not bad. It's the ideal situation actually.

The money spent generates tons for the cancer research. The Pros know what they are doing and they do it all month. I think 4 weeks is a bit much but whatever.

IK nails it. Susan G Komen sounds all warm and fuzzy, but has tremendously harmed the fundraising of other diseases and has become corporate influenced.

See the efforts made by SGK to block a viable patient's bill of rights.

The breast cancer awareness movement is all about marketing. It doesn't matter how much this stuff costs.

Companies can donate and deduct this from their taxes. Really not an issue here guys

Very good point. I remember in the early 2000s there was a group of wives of QBs of the 80s and early 90s who created something called the "Quaterback Club" (or something like that). I believe Marino, Esiason, Flutie and Rypien's wives were involved as they all had children stricken with Autism or some other childhood disease/condition. I think at some point in the 90s, 30% of the starting QBs in the NFL had a child afflicted with some type of condition. It got a tad bit of publicity, but the groundwork was there for the NFL to run with it and they wiffed. Maybe it was a catalyst to jump on Cancer (which would be a good thing), but I do find it intriguing that their true fanbase probably dies off in droves due to heart disease, and they don't do anything with that from what I am aware of. It would be like the WNBA advocating Ball Cancer Awareness.

Having an entire quarter of the season dedicated to wearing pink for anything is ridiculous. One week is plenty, and the league/tv coverage can still tout it and use pink in the logos all they want. But to put pink in the mix of the uniforms for a whole month is insulting to me. Plus, it's a game of men with well over half the fans being male, where's the prostate cancer awareness? I'm not trying to criticize them or call them hypocrites, it's just absurd to have to look at pink crap all over the field for 1/4 of the season. Makes me NOT want to contribute.

Do the professional photographers at the game have to go through and photoshop all of the pink nonsense out of their shots? ;) The cause is admirable and all, but I think the NFL has taken it to a goofy minor league level.

After one weekend of games I am sick of all the pink hats and shoes and pink whatever...this needs to stop. We have three more weeks to go of this nonsense.

How did this shoved down the NFLs throat??

You can thank Redskins owner Daniel Snyder for this (specifically his wife). Say what you want, it doesn't hurt the game at all, and actually got my wife watching more football (good for me). It also raises tons of money, good for the cause.

Your wife watches more football because some players wear pink shoes or wristbands?

I suspect a large part of the reason for this is that they want all teams to have had a home game while wearing pink. To assure everyone has a home game you need to go 3 or 4 weeks at least.Same thing with the NFL having a Hispanic Heritage Month instead of week.

I'm sick to death of it. It's not marketing for cancer, it's marketing for the NFL. It's "Hey, we are a MANLY bunch, but look, we really care about women too - come watch our product!".

AWARENESS??? Are folks not aware that people (men get it too by the way) get breast cancer at this point? Do you know what kills more woman than breast cancer? LUNG cancer. About 4 times over. Over 10 times as much money is spent on breast cancer research per death that it causes than lung cancer. Breast cancer accounts for about 7% of cancer deaths. When is the lung cancer awareness month? Anybody know? Is there one? What color is it? How bout colon or prostrate cancer?

I love my Mom too, and I've had friends with breast cancer. It's a terrible disease and should be eradicated if we can do it. But I've had four close relatives die from four different types of cancer, all of them more lethal than breast cancer. At this point, we are all OVER aware of breast cancer compared to everything else. It's now just a cheap marketing ploy used by various organizations to bolster their image with a particular demographic. The 10%/15% research return on investment on any donations this awareness might prompt would be much better spent elsewhere.

Yes, don't ask me why. If we had the $, there is no doubt in my mind that she'd pay whatever it took to buy anything pink that Drew Brees was wearing last night (and not because he broke Johnny U's record, either). That wouldn't happen if it weren't pink. And it's not "some players", by the looks of it, it's "all players." I agree that it's a bit much, and becoming more and more each year....which tells me that it's working, otherwise why continue to do it bigger and bigger each year?

I think some of the reaction against it is misplaced. Yes there are other life-threatening things that could also have been given focus. Yes there is positive public image to be gained by companies participating in this.

But those don't make it a bad thing. Far better than doing nothing, and most business are doing nothing in regard to any of this.

I would think awareness when it comes to cancer is a good thing, regardless of donations towards research and the like. If having breast cancer awareness causes a family to have a conversation about getting tested when they wouldn't have, that's a good thing. And I don't think the fact it's focused on breast cancer would mean men would be immune from getting the thought put in their head that their own preventive checkup would be a good thing too.

:goodposting: My life has been touched by multiple forms of cancer, one of which is breast cancer so I'm not insensitive to the issue. However, I also feel it is way overdone. Its a PR ploy.Oh, and the :tinfoilhat: side of me feels that curing cancer is not on the agenda - treating it is. Much like the common cold.

It's a good cause but there are boatloads of other good causes. The nfl has far overdone it and I don't like the over emphasis on one specific cause to the complete exclusion of all others. I donate time and money to the Anerican Cancer Society, so I get it. But when will it stop? Pink ball? Pink goal posts? Pink turf? You laugh, but did you expect the amount of pink you're seeing now five years ago?

At what point does it invade too far into the actual viewing of the game? What if coaches wore pink bunny suits? I know that's ridiculous but how far can the pink expand before it goes too far?

Did anyone else think it was strange that Brees' record-breaking game ball has a pink ribbon on it?

Agreed. If it were a sincere concern about the health of people, there would also be a month focusing on cancers specific to men.

I actually think it would be more effective as a 1 week event rather than 4. It just seems to soften the impact when you see so much for so long. I understand the longer period puts it in front of more eyes but I think the reaction is "Oh yeah, this again".

IMO, it's NOT better then doing nothing. Nothing would be MUCH better. By being so over the top, it trivializes everything else. I read an article the other day about other organizations glomming on to the pink craze. Several stores reserved up front parking spots for breast cancer survivors. That sounds awesome right? At least until a lung cancer survivor is forced to walk past an empty one. What does that women say to herself? My cancer wasn't cool enough to merit me a cushy parking spot? You think seeing pink shoes makes men feel the need to get their colons checked? And as for the ladies, at this point they certainly don't need pink on jerseys to remind them of what they need to do screening wise if the last 73 million pink marketing ploys they've seen have failed. And I'm not even sure of whatever additional donations the campaign might manage to eventually funnel into actual research. If those donations come at the expense of some OTHER donation that business/person/family might make, there is a net loss there in my mind. It's not like the donation fund is inexhaustible for most folks, in general, some choices are being made somewhere along the line. I know lots of generous folks who say, "I'm going to give X percent to charity this year". And if this campaign drives a hefty portion of that into breast cancer, what does that mean for kids diseases, or other forms of cancer, or whatever other more needy (at this point) charities?
