Adam Schefter, of the NFL Network, reports the Kansas City Chiefs have not had any recent conversations with TE Tony Gonzalez about a new contract. He is slated to become an unrestricted free agent following this season and could hit the open market.
I wouldn’t be bitter if they let me go," TE Tony Gonzalez told me after the locker room cleared out. Gonzalez is headed for a contract showdown with the Chiefs. He’s analyzed the roster, considered KC’s inability to take the next step, looked at all the young players who need to get paid, and reached the conclusion that this could be a volatile offseason in Kansas City. "But right now, to me, winning is more important than staying in KC," Gonzalez said. He sounded like a confident professional open to the idea of trying it somewhere else before his skills decline.
So, what are the chances he stays w/ KC?And if he leaves.......what teams would be in the running? (have TE needs AND $$ to spend)CHI seems like an obvious choiceCAR?

If the Chiefs are smart, it won't be with them.

They need to spend their cap space on both the offensive line and defensive lines. The Chiefs have needs greater than a tight end. And as good as Gonzalez is, KC has a pretty good-looking young guy behind him in second-round pick Kris Wilson.

Edit: FWIW from a Chiefs fan, put him in a potentially explosive offense (ala San Diego) and he will easily be at top-3 fantasy tight end. Based on what I have seen this season, he's STILL the elite player he always was... but the Chiefs just can't get him the ball. Lack of receiving threats means he always draws a top-notch corner, the line can't block for Green and Green can't get him the ball.

The Jets and Schott Jr would love to get their "Gates" in that offense.

Then all we need is LT!!!

Or, How about this food for thought...

Gonzo to Washington, KC brings in Eric Johnson, who is expendible with the drafting of Vernon Davis..

(Would love to see Gonzo in Chicago though)

The Chiefs aren't void of talent at the TE position behind Gonzalez. I'd pin Kris Wilson up against a lot of No. 2 TEs in the league.

They would use the cap space Gonzalez frees up on a tackle, guard, center, receiver, defensive tackle and then the "perhaps" positions of cornerback, middle linebacker and quarterback.

Chicago

Minnesota (Could be just the high-profile signing that owner Wilf needs to revive interest in the team and stadium)

Carolina

Buffalo

Cincinnati (Can you even IMAGINE?)

Jacksonville

NYJ

OAK

Green Bay

I like this list except:Jacksonville (Marcedes Lewis)Oakland (I don't see Gonzo jumping ship to go to a team in disarray within the division)

I am guessing they will tag him. The franchise tag won’t cost that much for a TE. I doubt they want to sign him to a long term deal or lose him to another team.
