Good Trade Review Policy (1 Viewer)

Hey All,

Ive been reading through the postings and havent found an answer, so I thought I would post the question. Im in a dynasty league with full defenses, (46 man roster) salary cap, and a fairly high entry fee. We currently have a week 6 trade deadline (commenserate with the NFL deadline) to keep teams from having firesales once they are out of it. We do not currently have a trade review policy. The Commish doesn't want to veto trades because he is an owner and feels it would put him in a bad position. That said we have had some trades people feel are questionable and those owners would like a trade review system. The whole dynasty with salary cap issue makes it hard to equate things becuase a team might feel justified (for example) trading a high priced Marvin Harrision for a cheap Colston. These players arent in the same field production history wise, but when you consider salary cap numbers and age I would see it possible to justify.

So, how do we do it? Would any of you mind sharing how similar leagues you have run or been in have done it?

Thanks!

In my salary cap dynasty we dont have trade review. Like you said, trades that seem one sided could be made for salary cap purposes.

Trades arent questioned unless an owner challenges the trade. If that happens then the commssioners look at it and decide. This is how we word it:

8.2 Any owner is free to bring any question regarding a trade to the

attention of the commissioners.

8.3 The commissioners may veto any trade if it is not in the best interest of both teams or is detrimental to the league as a whole. Both Commissioners must agree the trade is not appropriate for rule 8.3 to be enforced

IMO it's almost impossible to reject any trade in a dynasty league.

Excerpt from our rulebook:Agreement

Owners may negotiate trades in whatever medium they find most useful but no trade is agreed to until it is submitted and accepted via the League hosting service.

Mutual Value

Every trade must provide clear value for each team involved.

Collusion

No trade may be the result of any form of collusion that would violate the League charter or reduce the overall competitiveness of the League.

Approval

The Commissioner must approve all trades. The approval process will be used to verify the value proposition for each participant and the absence of collusion. It will not be used to protect owners from bad trades or assist in trade value evaluation.

Mutual value allows the commish to ask each owner to explain the value they believe they are getting in the trade if necessary...assuming a reasonable explanation all trades are approved...

There is also a clause about the commish having this sole authority and if you don't trust the commish this league is probably not for you...but each owner has 1 challenge of a commish's ruling per year, in which case the matter may be handed over to a league vote...

In our 12 team dynasty league, we have a 3 team rules committee. All trades are subject to review by the rules committee for possible collusion. If the rules commitee voids a trade, the league can vote and overturn the rules committee decision by a simple majority.

There is no reason other than collusion to veto a trade in dyansty. Teams should be free to make bad trades.

In our 6 seasons, we have yet to veto a trade.

Some excerpts from our rules:

A2: THIS LEAGUE IS COMPRISED OF ADULTS AND EVERY MEMBER IS EXPECTED TO ACT ACCORDINGLY.

A6: THE “OFFICIAL LEAGUE RULES” WILL BE IMPLEMENTED & GOVERNED BY A THREE (3) MEMBER COMMISSIONERS BOARD CONSISTING OF THE THREE ORIGINAL LEAGUE FOUNDERS. THIS BOARD WILL SERVE AS THE LEAGUES GOVERNING BODY.

A9: THE COMMISSIONERS BOARD RESERVES THE RIGHT TO REMOVE/REPLACE ANY LEAGUE MEMBER THAT CONTINUOUSLY AND REPEATEDLY CHOOSES TO IGNORE RULE A2.

It is understood that we are adults. The Commissioners Board will not overturn any trade. The league's owners understand that any collusion will ultimately destroy a great league and thus, we have no collusion rules. Freedom to run our team as we see fit is what we all want. None of us want a commissioner or two telling us our trade is unfair. If two or more teams are willing to make a trade and have agreed on the terms, who are we to say no?

BTW, many owners have differing value systems in place and what is good for one is not necessarily good for another. How do you compensate for that differing value when approving or disallowing a trade to go down?

People who complain about a trades fairness are just jealous that they are not very good at being a GM and want to even the playing field. Let's face it, some guys are just better than others at pulling off that big trade that could be the difference in a championship season or not.

Plus, this is DYNASTY folks.....you want to win and continue to win for years to come. Some trades just lend themselves more to accomplishing this than others.

Sorry, no trades rules posted as they are fairly generic and deal more with time constaints and length of trading period. The point I was trying to make is that having any trade second guessed and possibly reversed by another league member is just not right. Who is this person to tell me what is fair or not with relation to my team? I personally would not be involved in a league where someone else has the right to say I can or cannot make a trade because they don't think it is fair.

If you were dead set on implementing something (not saying it's a good idea), the NBA has rules about trades and the salary cap. You can't just ditch high-priced players for cheap ones.

A little off subject, but I feel “fire sales” do have a place in dynasty leagues- a rebuilding team needs every avenue it can utilize to compete for the future. Taking away the trading component so early in the season seems drastic to me. The issue is how to manage them so they don’t unfairly jeopardize the competitive balance in a given season. As a commish of a dynasty league, I send an annual "PSA" email in week 7 addressing fire sales, asking rebuilding teams in that position to send an email to the whole league that a particular player can be had- this gives everyone a shot at the player and also drums up a market for the player.Regarding trade review, I would only look further into a trade if another owner objects or if it smacks of collusion.
