Wow, Mediterranean Sundance is epic. Not a fan of Al DiMeola at all, but that project was great. The Guitar Trio is a good one, too.
Along those lines, Strunz and Farrah are touring the US and I highly recommend seeing them.
A good bit of it is the tone. I can't stand the sound of Ovations. It's to the point of distraction for me. Don't get me wrong, he's got chops to the moon and back, but a lot of what he plays just leaves me cold. Though I do like MS and Beyond the Mirage.Wow, Mediterranean Sundance is epic. Not a fan of Al DiMeola at all, but that project was great. The Guitar Trio is a good one, too.

Just came here to post that same link. I watched it a couple months ago...wonderful player. Amazing he felt he wasn't up to par with Coryell and McLaughlin.
I'm not sure anyone was up to par with McLaughlin to be honest.Just came here to post that same link. I watched it a couple months ago...wonderful player. Amazing he felt he wasn't up to par with Coryell and McLaughlin.
True. I had read somewhere (wiki?) that DeLucia didn't want to continue playing with him due to the pressure to perform to his level.I'm not sure anyone was up to par with McLaughlin to be honest.Just came here to post that same link. As far as technique and raw chops not sure anyone has touched JM.True. McLauglin's been one of my favorites since the '80s when I discovered The Inner Mounting Flame. Saw him live once in NYC playing with Trilok Gurtu and Kai Eckard - opening for Coyell, DiMeola and Bireli Lagrene. Never saw DeLucia though. As far as technique and raw chops not sure anyone has touched JM.True. Ability to go crazy fast, super accurate, change of times and tonality just crazy.
Big Mahavishnu Orchestra fan here. Sick work by Drummer Billy Cobham. I had a friend, a genius in his own right (totally cool guy who happened to finish first in class at Columbia Med) who could do as good a job with their music as anyone I've seen.McLauglin's been one of my favorites since the '80s when I discovered The Inner Mounting Flame.
