Goodell's Draft Plan: Round 1 Thursday Night (1 Viewer)

Almost as good as his idea to move the Super Bowl to London. This would suck balls. I'm really hating the over-commercialization of the NFL. You put opening night on a Thursday and made the flippin' schedule release a prime time special. Don't #### with the draft any more than you have - it's all we have left.

 You're hating that the guys who are running the sport you love are trying to make it more successful?

I'm hating the fact that they're trying to fix something that's not broke. This sort of excessive tinkering can backfire (see Bettman:NHL).

I love this idea. On Saturday I Tivo'd it so I could stain my deck, do some planting, and help a friend move. I watched what I could in between those things. If I didn't watch it I could've mowed my lawn which is going to be jungle by this Sat.

Have you noticed that no other sporting event jumps into the Sunday slot after Football ends? There is a legion of men out there that devote their Sundays to watching sports. And then the season ends and no more sports. Why? Because the weather is warming up. People can now go outside and do things they want or need to do. I need my weekends to do other things in the warmer months whether it's mowing the lawn, going to a spring wedding, or those late spring graduation parties. And of course those all day smoke session on the grill!?!?!

Give me primetime. I'll still be there on Sat watching the last few rounds. PRobably the same method I had this year, DVR it and catch up 30 minutes at a time in breaks taken from doing stuff outside....

Basketball, Hockey and Baseball are all on Sunday afternoons as well as Nascar. Football is not the only sport played on Sundays. Although it is the best.

Absolutly hate this idea. I have spent the past ten drafts getting together with my brother and friends on the weekend of the draft to hang out and watch our favorite teams draft for the future. With this new plan it won't happen anymore because some of us work nights and some of us live out of town.

I think the idea here is that you (and NFL Junkies like me) are going to watch either way. They want to non NFL junkie to watch. The wife who is interested but doesn't want to spend her Sat sitting in front of the TV may tune in. The casual fan who isn't on a Fantasy Football Site 4 months prior to the start of the season may be more amenable to watching it in prime time than on a Sat...

This makes sense but I still hate it.

All of the sudden people are going to devote a Thursday & Friday night to something they won't watch on a Saturday afternoon? No way.

If they did this: I'd watch Thursday night. Maybe (most likely) Friday. Very little to none of Saturday. They (ESPN/NFLN) spend the final rounds talking about picks in the early rounds and every now and then tell us who was picked in the current round. I'll catch up on the final rounds online.

Like I said, some of us like to get outside on the weekends in late April. You may want to try it sometime. I'd suggest an SPF 90 for you just to be on the safe side...

I think Thursday night is dumb. Really dumb. But Goodell doesn't seem like a very good commish - more like a placeholder until they get another good one.

If they want to move it to a weeknight, Friday night makes sense, since people can still do the get-together party with no work the next day. I understand wanting to get yet another weeknight audience, but losing the pople who are most interested in your product is not normally a good idea.

Why do you say that? I can't say I have a good or bad opinion of the guy yet. Just curious as to why you think he is bad...

I don't think he's bad necessarily. But I don't think he's good. This idea, the London Super Bowl idea- they are marketing gimmicks. When you have the most successful sports league in the nation, it's naturla to tweak some things.

However, he needs to realize the the average American's attention span is limited and fickle. The average football fan's attention span for the NFL draft is much less limited, adn far less fickle.

I hadn't heard about the London SB thing. Not sure I like that at all...Having this on a Thursday and a Friday nights is fine with me. Better than watching some drama or sitcom on local television. Leaves me more time on one of the weekends days to be outside doing stuff.

My only thing I really think about Goodell is him cracking down on knuckleheads. Long over do and I think he is handling it very well...

I just thought of a reason to like the London SB. Since they're 5 hours ahead they would have to start the game earlier than 6PM Eastern. :popcorn:Other than that, I have no reason not to like a London SB. It's not like they're cutting out the "little guy" or fans of the teams. They did that years ago.

More interesting to me then considering whether or not it's a good thing if I can't slug beers with my buddies for three straights days watching the draft, is what sort of affect might this have on the draft itself.

Since teams that have more times to sit back and assess who is left after round, would that encourage trading?

Would it even the playing field a bit as teams with less draft skill can plan some moves and catch up a bit to teams like the Pats that seem to think and move quicker then most in the draft?

I think Friday appeals to the people who don't want to watch the drama/sitcom, but still works for those who want to do a draft party. An interesting possibility is that they want to reduce the number of actual fans who show up at the draft, and try to make that first night of the draft some premium ticket - exclusive thing.

We see that with luxury suites - fans pay for the luxury suites via concession prices, merchandise, etc, and the team caters to the box owners.

I don't want this. I want it to be a traveling event. Put it in a 32 city rotation. Every NFL city gets it every 32 years. The hype really is in the coverage on TV and impacts every market so the fact that it is Green Bay one year will have little impact on the bottom line compared to NYC. It doesn't need to be at Radio City Music Hall every year.

Personally, I don't like the idea. For me, the draft is something I look forward to for months and I make it a big deal weekend event for friends. This year I deep fried a turkey. Just a cool thing to do.

To go from that to having to make my way to the wife's doghouse because she won't be able to watch Grey's Anatomy OR relenting on that battle and being relgated to the TV in the bedroom is not very attractive to me IMO.

That said, there is no doubt that a move of this nature helps market the sport and I do think it's tremendous drama, especially when you get a kid slipping in the draft. But also, I just think it's cool to reflect in what it must be like to be a 22 year old kid who is about to start their life in one of 32 NFL cities (of which he does not which one he's going to) but with some nice coin in the pocket. I think it sells well...unfortunately.

I'm surprised more people aren't commenting on the people who actually go to NYC to see it. Can those people get there early Thursday afternoon and stay through Saturday late?

 Agreed.I don't mind the London SB. I'm not going to the game anyway, so what do I care where it is? It does seem weird that they'd do this while at the same time taking the pro-bowl out of Hawaii to make it more accessible.

You needed to get this taken care of right away. My wife's preferred TV is in the bedroom. That leaves the 50 inch WS in the basement all to me. You have bigger issues to tackle than when the draft is. Getting control over your TV should be tops on your list!!!

this is a bad idea. if anything, they should do 1st round on Friday night and finish up the rest on Saturday. cut down on the time limits per pick if necessary.

This would be my preferred way to do this. I get my day on the weekend back and I also miss whatever lame shows i was going to watch. But then there would be 6 rounds on Sat. Seems like a lot. But hey, I can sit down and watch 10 hours of the Barrett Jackson car auction so why not this?!?!

I actually like the idea. Teams will get a night to put together offers to trade up into the 2nd, and then another night to trade up in the 4th. I enjoy the draft a ton so adding another day can't be a bad thing for me.

3 days > 2 days

I wasnt happy that they moved it away from the noon time slot in the first place. Takes away from the day long event, the tailgating, nearly game-like atmosphere. Moving to Thursday is even worse.
