Government employee thread! (Being a government employee is sweet) (3 Viewers)

You won't get rich in the government, but can be very comfortable.  In 17 years I'll have 36 years total and allow me to retire at 60 as we get annuity (assuming a 175k salary), plus SS, plus TSP (both Roth and regular).
175 salary is rich where I'm from. Lol. I could see myself working my way back to the outpatient VA clinic in the town I just left eventually if a position came available.

1 day into my 5th week. Still no CAC access. NCOIC talked to them today and they said they never got form. We had proof it was sent but had to fill it out again and resend.

Government specializes in inefficiency.  Just way too much bureaucracy.  Too many jobs in government sole purpose seems to be to slow down people who are productive.

That’s pretty rich.

That’s pretty rich.
Anybody who works 30 years and stashes away the max in TSP in an aggressive fund, will easily have 7 figures in savings, be getting 35 percent of their top salary, have affordable health care plans, and be towards the top end of social security benefits.  Very comfortable retirement especially if you have your home paid off.

Yea it’s amazing. I have friends though who haven’t donated to their tsp - to each their own but I don’t get it.

I'm not currently doing the max, but we're putting in 15% of our income for the next 20 years, at minimum. Will likely do the 19.5k or whatever the max is in a few more years from then on.

Even if you have an outside IRA that you like better, you should at least put in 5% to TSP to get the government match. Free money!  :moneybag:

Starting to settle in some now. Won't have a full schedule for a few more weeks but seeing patients consistently. Time to get to work and keep getting better. Goal down the road is to end up at Ft Campbell or one of the Florida bases.

Looks like we're headed for a 2.7% (average) pay increase in January. 2.2% is across the board and then locality increase will average 0.5%.

We get 2 hours before most holidays. We didn’t before Columbus Day, though.
Best we ever get is when there's an Organization Day and you're not accounted for after 12.  The last one we had was ~4 years ago.

I've had 6 different commanders come through since I've been here, and there's never been any consistency about 59 minutes, not even for Christmas.

We've been getting that, but it depends on whether my last patient of the day shows up or not. Usually, they don't.
On Friday, all of our clinics schedules last appointments were no later than 1450, which seemed a sure sign that we were getting 59, but the commander's secretary sent out a message around 1400 saying it wasn't authorized.

I’ve been serving in a lower graded position than my experience would warrant for the past 4 years, could have easily gotten into a better paying position but that would mean moving.
I’ve been applying for promotions in a specific area I don’t love but will do, there has always been someone with about ten years more experience applying for the same job. I get an interview but not selected.
Interviewed for a promotion in early august in that area I don’t love.  And another, higher promotion for duties I actually enjoy a week later.
Was offered the first job over a month ago but really wanted the second job. I just so happen to be working on a temporary assignment for the office I wanted, doing the job I wanted. I informed my current boss about the first offer, about an hour later I was called by the big boss saying I was selected for the better job. This was in early September. so I declined the first offer.

finally received the tentative offer today :D   HR is slow, but things do work out.

The past one was the first one in a long time our agency top down gave 3 hours.  But our 59 isn't always 59
I won’t get into the law here but the last time I researched this only the 59 was arguably authorized. And that’s not really in writing either, just that a portion of an hour must be worked.
not that anyone would complain.

We’ve never gotten more than 59 minutes. Technically you’re not allowed to give more than that.
Like I said, these two-hour early releases come from the Department level. Emails go out department-wide announcing the early release. We charge the time to admin leave. I assume the secretary is legally allowed to do this since it’s been going on for many years across several administrations.

Probably. Secdef and sec army don’t do this for us. But we do get a fair amount of admin leave for certain things.

when the Secretary of the department sends and authorized email, pretty sure it was legit. ;)

Suffice it to say your agency has a more liberal policy than mine, or what OPM would support. Agency policy >>> OPM guidance, so good on your agency. 🤷

Can someone explain this 59 minute thing to this civilian?

Thanks.
it’s the rare occasion where we don’t need to pretend to work more than one minute in the last hour of a day, usually before a holiday.
