Nice!I like our new Secretary.... early out tomorrow!@#@#!
Thats not really a thing where i work. Thats pretty disgusting imoNot going to be popular but I'll throw it out there. If you have a great government gig I'm happy for you. My only ask is don't be like the umpteen blood sucking leaches who milk the system because they can. The perfectly healthy people that claim disability at the end to be able to take a year or two off on the taxpayers dime, or to spike pensions. One of my best friends is a firefighters and it's disgraceful what's going on. Be upstanding, have some dignity, and don't rape the system and taxpayers.
and a 4 day weekend sounds nice but not sure on that either, with the run of number of 10 hour daysWhat's your commute like? Are you doing any WFH?So i guess I'll ask here.
I'm on a 9 day AWS or 9/80 - pending what you call it. I have the first friday of the PP off.
This spring im thinking of switching over to a 4/10. I used to work this out of college but it was 3 10s and an 8
Anyway, I'm trying to determine the best schedule. I used to have wednesdays off when i did the 3 10s and 8.
So would you do a (not counting the weekend here x)
10 10 10 10 RDO x x 10 10 10 10 RDO or
10 10 10 10 RDO x x 10 10 RDO 10 10
10 10 10 10 RDO x x RDO 10 10 10 10
I hate thinking at being at work until 6 on a fridayand a 4 day weekend sounds nice but not sure on that either
yeah almost an hour.....but good point....we could never wfh... not sure what the new policy would be. that could change thingsWhat's your commute like? Are you doing any WFH?
When I worked 10 hour days, I had long commutes so my days were really long. But, I was also WFH twice a week so I alternated WFH days and in-office days so I wasn't having to commute back-to-back days. If you have a long commute, taking that day off in the middle of the week might be nice.
Option 1 IMO, added in commute makes a day off in the middle not much benefit to me compared to a 3 day weekend every week.So i guess I'll ask here.

Isn't everyone union? But my division is all tech anyway so...It is common for me with union workers. Non union it's a much smaller percentage.
So i guess I'll ask here.

We actually have a different policy. We need coverage on all days so the usually don't want everyone off the same days. For example, almost my whole group does a 9/80.A) I did 9/80 when I was onsite for Navy. My brain is mush after 9 hours. I turned down 4x10.
B) I would take off Fridays since there are at least 3 federal holidays always on Monday.
C) I would check with your supervisor if you can change/alternate the day off like that. I'm not a gov employee but my understanding the manager can object if these off days are interfering with other responsibilities. For example, the manager/director for my department at NAS JAX stipulated that any 9/80 participant had to take the same Friday so that the other Friday would at least be productive.

JaxBill said:I think this is considerably more prevalent on the local and state level. My first IT job out of college was with the PhilaPoliceDept. There were like 10 programmers on staff and 3 had strong union ties and came into the office just to pass the time. One of the others was totally incompetent and the guy we reported to was a hypochondriac who was always making doctor appointments because he thought he was dying at 42.
My experience dealing with Fed IT workers is they might kill an hour or two there but they really seem like average to above average corporate IT folks working in crappier buildings.
I think it might be because the Feds have a longer probation period.
Weird. We are all unionIt depends. The mechanics are but engineers/tech are not.
3 year probation? Ours are one year.I agree with this. I just fired a newer engineer who was nearing the end of his 3 year probation. If I have to put you on a PIP now, I don't want you later
3 year probation? Ours are one year.
Yep. I was one of the last in our office to have one year probation. Just over 4 years ago.Ours are two years I believe. DOD research lab. We just fired a guy weeks before his probationary period ended. He just wasn't cutting it.
I guess we’re just average here. The 2.7% average pay raise is official. And OPM has posted new salary tables for 2022: https://www.opm.gov/policy-data-oversight/pay-leave/salaries-wages/
But, unless something changes, child tax credit going back down to $2,000 for under 17 rather than the $3,000 for under 18 it was this year. I have a child turning 17 in 2022, and ones who are 19 and 15 in 2022. So, that will be $3,000 in child tax credit rather than $6,500 (17 and older each get $500). Nice that my raise gets to go to taxes!
Manager / supervisor can veto with operational necessity. Our last office had 4 of us on RDO, two on alternating Mondays, two on Fridays.A) I did 9/80 when I was onsite for Navy. My brain is mush after 9 hours. I turned down 4x10.

I’d assume this is more common with physically intensive jobs. Not an issue here. Not going to be popular but I'll throw it out there. If you have a great government gig I'm happy for you. I may be wrong but wouldn’t the raise be approved before any change in power? That wouldn’t take place until the first week of January.House Democrats have suggested a 5.1% raise. But I'm pretty sure they always come in higher than what actually happens. Still, Biden at 4.6% and House Dems at 5.1% seems to be a good sign for a decent raise in 2023. I guess we'll have to see what happens to that if Republicans win back seats in the Fall.
If they were to actually pass a budget on time then it would be, but I assume we'll be on a CR into the 2023 calendar year.I may be wrong but wouldn’t the raise be approved before any change in power? That wouldn’t take place until the first week of January.
My wife was a gub employee for several years. She bailed though cuz she has a very strong work ethic, and she felt like it didn't matter. It's pretty bad. I love what I do, so working for the government hasn't changed my work ethic or passion for it, but the laziness all around is astounding and pathetic. Soldiers are depending on us to get them moving again and some just don't give a ####. Pitiful. My wife was a gub employee for several years. During my 20+ year federal career, I've seen many things that reinforce all the stereotypes of government work and workers. But, there are also many moments when you get involved with some really great people who are super smart and dedicated and who are doing some really great things.Had a couple Special Forces medics shadowing me the past couple days while going through their training. Very cool stuff.

Also, it really sparked my interest in working directly with special ops one day. Will need a few years in the system before applying, but it's a possibility. They have their own PTs in the field with them.During my 20+ year federal career, I've seen many things that reinforce all the stereotypes of government work and workers. I deal with both daily.....it "cool" and stabby all at the same time. We just brought someone into our group recently that the powers that be did not care to consult the correct people because it would have a no go from me based on the former.During my 20+ year federal career, I've seen many things that reinforce all the stereotypes of government work and workers. Serious answer.....I think that depends on agency and position. What’s the best way of getting a government job?
Also realize that you have to get past the key word algorithm in USA jobs to get to the next step. Tailor your resume to the job description on the posting. Using exact phrasing and words helps a lot.Serious answer.....I think that depends on agency and position.
First start with USAJOBS..... They have external positions posted. Here it helps if you know someone obviously but the most common path is to find postings by contractor companies. It's easier to start as a contractor then flip later if spots open up. That is for my tech job in my agency
