Grab Brad Johnson for 4 weeks or Orlovsky for the season? (1 Viewer)

By now we have already seen the news that Dan Orlovsky will most likely be the Detroit Lions starter from here on out. Kitna looks to be headed to the IR so it will be Orlovsky the rest of the way. Brad Johnson gets the keys to the Cowboys for the next four weeks via Romo's broken pinkie. So what's the shark move here? Pick up Orlovsky on a bad team with a weak offense for the remainder of the season or Johnson on a good team with an explosive offense but you only have him for four weeks.

We've seen the theory of "plug and play" QBs into a good system a la Matt Cassel not work out that well already this year. Orlovsky is the guy that scrambles out of the back of the end zone to avoid a sack. Neither one really gets anyone in here excited I am sure but those in deep leagues, picking up which one is the better choice?

At this point - in a dynasty I could only pick up Johnson - am hoping to be able to plug him in for a game or two until Romo returns.

First off, Johnson won't be playing for 4 weeks, since their BYE is in Week 10. Plus, Romo might play in Week 9. So you're looking at Johnson playing in the following games:

at St. Louis (good matchup for him)

Tampa Bay (questionable start here)

at New York Giants (would not start him here, plus Romo might be back)

So, really only 1 game where Johnson is worth starting.

On the other hand, Orlovsky has a pretty tough schedule.

This is very dependant on what type of league and your team composition. Is this a depth move, a move for trade bait, or a move to fill in for a bye week? Also, is this league a dynasty or redraft? You may be able to also consider Seneca Wallace or Ryan Fitzpatrick in the discussion. In all cases each of these guys are a long shot to hold any value in any formats. As a short term answer I think that even though I think Brad Johnson is too old he may present the best chance of producing quality numbers over a short span. I kind of like Seneca Wallace next as a possible short term quality filler.

Brad Johnson won a Super Bowl. Dan Orlovsky ran out of the back of his own endzone and didn't even know it. There's your answer.

I'd lean towards Wallace followed by Johnson.

There's a chance that Hasselbeck is out for a while, so that means a possibility of utility the rest of the year. he can make plays with his legs, which helps a bit, and he's better than Orlovsky, in my opinion.

I play in a league where you don't get penalized for safeties. honk. Certainly Romo, Favre, and McNabb have done boneheaded things and they are easy starts. The bigger danger to Orlovsky is Stanton replacement during the fantasy playoffs and not having a #2 WR or TE. I think he is only a desperation play, but he has some upside. BJ is more of a steady mid #2 you can play in an ok matchup but not be too excited about it. I think you know what you're getting with BJ: 200 yards and a TD maybe 2. And a lot of handoffs to MBIII. Not worth the roster space unless you're desperate or in a 2QB league. About the same value as Garcia short term.I agree you should add Seneca Wallace to this discussion. I think he has the most upside given his mobility and easy schedule. If Hass gives up for the year, he plays STL and NYJ in the fantasy playoffs.

There is a romate possibility that Dan O will turn into this year's Derek Anderson, remote, but still a possibility.

We all know what we have in Brad Johnson, a possible 4 week starter with a pair of the league's best WRs.

I think the shark move is to grab Dan O, unless you really really need to win the next four games.

Didnt Brad Johnson already show that he was cooked a couple years ago? And now two years later he is supposed to be starter material? Plus the Cowboys pass blocking is suspect. I will be staying way far away from this guy.

Ya but wasn't he on MIN with garbage WRs? The guy now has two top WRs, the top TE, and a top RB. The line is suspect tho, so wonder how long he lasts.Looks like Brad's longest pass was a 35 yarder at the end of last season. Sign he can still get it out there?

There is a report on the ticket (sports radio theticket.com) in dallas that Romo is going to look into a splint that might let him play on the advice for Brett Favre

Are you judging these QB's as a bye week fill it..then you have to go by their weeks and who they play.

If as a starter..your record must be bad already why make it worst!

Orlovsky

Wallace

Johnson

I'd rather try to catch lightning in a bottle, than take the safe route with a guy who's only going to play three games max.

Wallace has some semblance of a running game to take pressure off, while Orlovsky has the potential for good garbage-time numbers. I'd pick him up, hope for a solid game or two, and see if he has any trade value - especially since QBs have been dropping like flies.

Is Seneca Wallace clearly the QB in SEA? What's Charlie Frye's deal?
I was at the Seahawk game this weekend. Clearly, Seneca will be the man.
Seneca Wallace is second on the depth charts; he was injured last week which is why Frye got the start. Wallace should be good to go from here on out. He's not a bad QB, pretty mobile and athletic. With some fairly decent weapons at his disposal -- Engram, KRob, and some backs who can catch out of the backfield -- I actually think he is a decent sleeper and has more upside than either Johnson or Orlovsky.
