Grading the Cardinals Draft (1 Viewer)

I know USA Today rated the Cards draft a four star affair, but I disagree with their assessment. I don't think you can grade out their performance any lower than a "B" due to the acquisition of Leinart. But, I think their subsequent picks were questionable at best.

Deuce Lutui might not even start this season. The better move would have been to trade up and acquire Justice, who fell into the second round and was selected just two picks ahead of them by Philly. A first round talent who could have made an impact in 2006.

Leonard Pope was an OK pick in the third round. The Cards were horrible in the red zone last season, so it makes sense. But, Denny tends to not use his tight ends in the passing game so you could argue they should have addressed other needs with that pick.

Watson, Johnson, and Watkins were disapointments in their final season in college. They dropped because of work ethic and/or performance issues. Workout warriors are fine, but I'd rather have football players. Not impressed by these picks.

I'm OK with Lewis from Virginia Tech. He grades out as a solid backup DT and the Cards needed depth. I thought the Cards got decent value with that pick considering it was in round 6.

Deuce was a little puzzling to me also. The Cards signed a nice-sized contract to Milford Brown and matched a sizeable deal (via the Bills) with Reggie Wells. Last but no least, you have last year's 4th-rounder (Elton Brown) as more-than-capable depth for both Milford and Reggie.

I do think the Cards were a little bummed D'Qwell Jackson was grabbed by Romeo. He would have really helped the core of their D. They also may have had a mini pipe dream about landing Mangold, but I highly doubt they throught it would be a reality in the 2nd.

Either way...their draft could not be graded poorly b/c Leinhart was a flat-out steal at 1.10. Plus, Pope was a nice grab in the 3rd.

My grade =

A-

Lutui was a reach imo, should have been a mid 3rd-mid 4th rounder.

There's a reason all those TEs were taken before Pope... It wasnt just one team passing on him - JAX, DEN, and STL all passed.

More to come in my draft grade article later this week...
