I'll post links later once I build a Spotify playlist.

First song that probably pops into most people's thoughts is Hallelujah, but I'll be mildly surprised if anything outshines Lou Reed's Pale Blue Eyes, both in quantity and quality.

Blitzkrieg Bop?

That's the other original I'm thinking of that's out of the fifties and sixties that might stand up with 10+.

Yesterday is the most covered song of all time. There has to be 10 great versions amongst the 3000 covers.

Summertime from Porgy and Bess has to be up there as well for a song with lots of great covers and unique takes.

Ray Charles did, IMO, the best version of "Yesterday"

"Summertime" is a GREAT pick. Here's my favorite version: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=XWxYx9mmr7U

It's also the best lip-synching I've ever seen.

Love that one, never heard it before. Just some of the great versions are Billie Holiday, Gil Melle, Charlie Parker, Janis Joplin, the Zombies, Miles Davis, Al Green, Louis Asmtrong/Ella Fitzgerald, Annie Lennox, Sam Cooke, Coltrane, George Benson, Duke Ellington, Chet Baker and Doc/Merle Watson. It's one of the greatest American songs ever written and lends itself so well to so many different interpretations. No matter what, the Gershwin song is always haunting.

I think you're right. I'm trying to think of another song that has had so many radical re-workings that were so good, and am coming up empty. You, sir, win the internet on this one.

The Look of Love, Dusty Springfield. Written by Burt Bacharach and originally sung by Dusty.

Covered by The Zombies, Diana Ross, Gladys Knight, Nina Simone, Marvin Gaye, Shirley Bassey and Diana Krall.

Nice call here. That's a murderer's row of good singers. Those of you who haven't heard Diana Krall before, stop reading this post right now and seek her out.

Me and Bobby McGee - Kris Kristofferson wrote and recorded, Janis' version is probably most famous, and i have heard versions from everyone from willie nelson to Gordon Lightfoot.

Willie Nelson may be the ultimate cover artist. Lamb Of God, Duke Ellington, The Ramones, Bob Marley.........doesn't matter - they all sound like Willie when he's done with the song.

I'd add "Superstar".

The Carpenters' version is the most famous and haunting, but it's been covered plenty.

Nice one!

"Autumn Leaves" got covered by (seemingly) everyone in the 50s.

I don't know why, but I love this raggedy-assed version of "Midnight Train To Georgia" by the Indigo Girls. I think it's because they perform it knowing they can't match Knight's version. The dudes doing the "hoo hoo"s are hilarious. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=v57pAXmKTh0

He might be the ultimate covered artist too. How many versions of "Night Life" and "Crazy" and "Hello Walls" are there?

Dave Mason might give him a run for his money - he covers "All Along The Watchtower" on every album he releases.

Hank Sr's I'm So Lonesome I Could Cry has a ton of covers: Country, Pop, Soul, Jazz & Rock.

Great tune, and that video is awesome on many levels.

I think Dylan has this title in a runaway.

Big U2 fan, but never been a fan of One.

Beatles for the win.

Drift Away

From Wiki -

"Drift Away" is a song written by Mentor Williams and originally recorded by John Henry Kurtz on his 1972 album Reunion. In 1973 the song became Dobie Gray's biggest hit, peaking at number five on the Billboard Hot 100 and certified gold by the RIAA.[1] It was the final pop hit for Decca Records in the United States.

A new version by Uncle Kracker, with Gray, became a major hit in 2003.

"Drift Away" has been covered by many bands and vocalists around the world. Versions include those of Allan Clarke, Roy Orbison, Ike and Tina Turner, Humble Pie, Mud, Rod Stewart, Steppenwolf, Waylon Jennings, Ray Charles, Neville Brothers, Michael Bolton, Jim Hollis, Christian Kane, The Rolling Stones, The Nylons, Ringo Starr, Bruce Springsteen, Judson Spence, and John Kay.[2] Folk singer Tom Rush recorded the song on his album What I Know, released in 2009. There is an unreleased 1974 recording of this song by The Rolling Stones. This version features all of the members of the then-current lineup of the Stones with the exception of Keith Richards and the addition of keyboardist Nicky Hopkins.[citation needed] The Heptones recorded a reggae version which is included on many compilation cds. Street Corner Symphony also sang a version of this song as their swan song on the season 2 finale of the NBC series, The Sing-Off; that version is arranged by Deke Sharon.[3] Bon Jovi usually played the song live in 1987: a version was recorded as part of a Westwood One radio live series concert. Dolly Parton and Anne Murray performed the song together in 1976 on Parton's variety show Dolly!, though they sang the lyrics of the Felts version ("I want to get lost in your country song").

Garth Brooks for the 2013 Blue-Eyed Soul album in the Blame It All on My Roots: Five Decades of Influences compilation.

Temuera Morrison recorded and included Drift Away in his 2014 debut album "Tem".[4]
