Greatest TV Shows of All Time: FBG Consensus: It's Happening, 30 lists received so far. (7 Viewers)

Question. A lot of you have been submitting David Letterman and using two different names. I looked it up and it seems that his show was called Late Night with David Letterman on NBC and then changed to Late Show with David Letterman when he changed networks.

I'm inclined to count this as one show, unless there is great outrage.
This seems like the right answer but while I liked Letterman I wasn't a devotee that watched every night. Maybe there is a difference in the two offerings but I never really noticed a difference.
The NBC show was more wacky and less refined than the CBS version but it was basically the same exact show.

I'd count it as one show also. It was about Letterman, not the network.

I agree.

This has already yielded results as I am now 7 episodes in to a 10 episode mini-series on Paramount+ that was not even on my radar before I googled lists of top TV shows to make sure I'm not missing anything.

Can't wait to see how this ends up!

@Scoresman, are you planning to list every show submitted, or just those with a certain number of points?

Top 200. But we will start with select honorable mentions that did not make it but were ranked highly on individual lists.

For example, my #4 show is not even close to making the top 200 at the moment.

At the end, you’ll be able to see everyone’s list and the master list of all movies on a google sheet.

Just curious Scores, are all your selections off the beaten path, or just a handful of favorites?

Interesting. From doing this kind of thing before, a #1 vote but only one vote wont make the list.
But ten top 50 votes and it rates very high.
If its just straight 70 points for a #1 and 1 point for a #70, a lot of top entries will miss out.
I would have considered upping someones top 20 so that #1 = 100 points, #2 = 98 or something.
70 to 1 and 1 to 70 works easiest though

My #1 and #2 making the cut?

That is correct. NBC holds the rights to the name "Late Night" (which it still uses today) and so Letterman had to give his show a different name when he moved to CBS.

I'm fine with them being combined, though I think the vast majority of his best material was from his NBC days.

I'm in. I'll get a list to you as soon as I can. I think I'm just going to put list of 70 in a randomizer or something because I'm finding it pretty challenging to decide how to compare shows like Deadwood vs The Flintstones.

Just a few. I have one of the chalkier entries overall.

This is how I was told these things have been scored in the past. It worked well for the horror countdown too.

I’m not married to this system by any means so if people think scoring should be modified I’m open to it.

But I also think that if your favorite show is something like a sketch comedy show from an Australian public access station in the early 1960s, you should expect to be on an island with that.

I like your 70-1 scoring. It’s a consensus ranking - more voters for a show shouldn’t be outweighed by one person with a highly ranked outlier.

Lucky i didnt do that lol. My #1 and #2 are both UK shows

Scoring system is totally up to you. Bumping someones number one score from eg 70 points to 100, is bound to have some consequences though.
If you have all this on an excel sheet, id be curious to rescore after the fact and see how much a difference it would make.
To be #1 = 100 points
#2 = 98 points
Until it catches up with the 70-1

Just that im tinkering with the idea of doing similar to the U2 countdown i did with another artist and want to see how much actual difference it makes, 30+ lists is staggering.

I’d lump them together, assuming you might have to do something similar with Scooby Doo since there’s so many variations
I’d at least lump the core stuff together, even the crappy scrappy years and treat anything else separately (a pup named scooby doo, mystery Inc, Velma)
And before you get ahead of yourself, when Scooby and the gang met the Harlem Globetrotters, that was a TV movie and thus ineligible.

I am almost halfway done with my list and this has been extremely difficult.

My first list had 145 shows/mini series etc.

Working it man…..some really tough decisions because I have nostalgia and then of course the incredible high quality we have today of Max, Netflix, Paramount etc…..

Spelling “Adams Family” with one “d” should get in grouped in with Paul Giamatti’s John Adams miniseries.

Don Adams' Screen Test

Totally forgot about Addams Family. Probably other shows that I watched a bunch in syndication growing up in 80's. Oh well I'm not amending my list.

I'm stuck at like 34 right now - do we have to get to 70?
Do you have a television?
You havent watched more than 34 TV shows in your life?
Cant speak for him, but i stalled out as well. I got to 40 or so, but it was mostly crap from kid and teen years. That is fine, but i also tried watching a few episodes of stuff here and there, and even many of those shows were rubbish to me. Yes, i could list a ton of shows ive seen, but not many i would want to sit down and watch in 2025, which is how i filter these types of lists. I don't want to rank things i cant in good faith recommend to others.

That's a little uncalled for.

I easily got to well over 100 and many of them won't constitute the best shows I've ever seen, but favorites I enjoyed at the time (and now). Also probably didn't see every show from all 70 episodes, but if I went that way, I'd have very few shows on my list.

Personally, the seeing all the episodes was only important for a drama with a running story line. For example, me seeing all the Impractical Jokers wouldn't be important, but if I only saw a few seasons of Breaking Bad it would not have been on my list.

The bolded was more the roadblock as I watched some episodes here and there of old MTV and Nickelodeon shows that I enjoyed at the time, and was surprised at how bad they were to me through 2025 eyes. I have encountered the same thing when doing movie rankings for the decade lists and others as I rewatch stuff. I am sure there will be tons of things I did forget about as the countdown goes on, and I am looking forward to seeing where some shows I feel strongly about either way show up. And yes, @Tick , Jackass was on the initial list. ;)

For me, I guess it hinges on the nostalgia it brings up while watching. Of course shows like Gilligan's Island or Mork & Mindy are out dated through today's eyes but watching them brings me back and is still a real enjoyment because of that nostalgia. The out-dated-ness of them didn't diminish the place they held and therefore still deserved to be listed.

Basically I didn't elimnate them just because they were old shows.

Exactly my approach. In fact, a good chunk of my shows are going to be nostalgic for me, even if they weren't high quality. Seems like this is the point of this exercise.

There was a definite "how many times have I watched the whole thing" factor to determining my favorites.

Shows that I seek out to watch over and over again really got a bump in my rankings. There are a few that are in my top 15-ish that are probably not on anybody else's list but i have on "speed dial" to watch when I don't feel like watching something new.
