Greatest Video Game Draft 2011 (2 Viewers)

1.5 The Legend of Zelda-NES Role Playing Game
Good pick. First game to ever use a battery pack. I always hated passwords and still do. God bless emulators that I don't have to deal with them anymore on those games.
In Japan (on the Famicom) it actually came out as a "Famicom Disk System" game instead of a normal Famicom game... They added the Battery Pack for America because they decided that Americans wouldn't buy the extra Disk System add-on...The advantage? The Disk System games still can save... Most of the battery backup cartridges have dead batteries and no longer can save a game from one session to the next...

1.5 The Legend of Zelda-NES Role Playing Game
a couple years ago I got so good at this game that I could speed run it in about 40 minutes... World Record is like 28 minutes or something like that...I was (and am) way prouder of this fact that I should be...
It is so much easier now than it was when it released. Back then, it was so epic. I remember my friends and I making our own maps and adding to it as we went along, then share and compare the next day at school.
It helps that I've played through most of the game like 100 times at minimum...

also I think its great that we have 1 arcade Classic, 1 NES Sports game, and 3 NES Nintendo Mascot Classics picked in the first 5 picks...

Nintendo FTW... :goodposting:

Withe the 1.06 pick, Yo Mama selects:

MARIO - Main Character

A couple of his games have already been taken, a few more will go in these first couple rounds. Mario is the most popular character in all video game history and is defintely front and center on the Mount Rushmore of Video Games Andy spoke of.

He's appeared in over 200 games and could possibly find himself in almost every category of this draft at some point (except villian of course).

My 8 year old son would fire me if I passed on his hero (actually was his Halloween costume this year).

Let's Go!

GREAT pick... This is #1 in the "hero" category and it isn't even close... 200 games, best selling, most recognizable character of ALL Time and it isn't even close. If anything, that Video Game Mt. Rushmore could arguably only be Mario (say, it should be a Video Game "Crazy Horse")...However, you are wrong. Mario has, in fact, been the villain in at least 1 game... I won't mention what game it is, but He has been a villain....

1.07 Civilization II Strategy/RTS ( might as well get this genre pick out of the way.)

;)

It's impossible to think in a turn-based strategy game and forget Civilization II. It's undoubtedly the best in the genre, and even many years after its release there are lots of fans still playing Civ II.

The game is not graphically stunning, even for it's time but the game itself is so in depth so engrossing that you probably won't notice too much.

Only my #1 and #6 games have been picked in my top 10. Wish I had a later round pick now. Stupid random list generator.

Excellent choice. I was introduced to Civ through the SNES of all things. I bought the PC version soon after as well as PSX version and all the subsequent sequals. Civ II definitely redefined a genre.

My son was Mario a few years ago....I still think it was one of his better costumes.

The best part was his offensive attempt at an Italian accent - I made him say trick or treat in character.

I've been told I do a spot on impression too. I entertained a bunch of high school aged girls one night who were looking at Mario action figures in a store as I walked by with my daughter and I said "It's-a me! Mario!" I continued and their favorite line was "Oh no! The princess is in another castle? She betta not be!" Of course, the girls could've just been laughing at how nerdy I was, but I don't care. My daughter was loving it.

1.09 - Legend of Zelda: Ocarina of Time, Role Playing

Now that I have time, I'll do a small write up, although I'm sure most have played this game.

The 5th game in the Legend of Zelda series (no the CD-i games don't count, I don't care what you say), Ocarina of Time was the Legend of Zelda's first leap into 3rd Dimensional gaming on the Nintendo 64. The introduction of Z-targetting really helped make this leap a success where other franchises couldn't find their way. The game was the first game to ever receive a perfect 10/10 rating from IGN. Ocarina of Time will also be given a full 3D re-release this year on the upcoming Nintendo 3DS.

I wasn't 100% sure what I was going to pick for my first pick. I had a few choices in mind. I'm hoping some of the others will still be there later. :crossfingers: But I didn't think this one would last long.

1.10 Chrono Trigger, 4th Generation RPG

created by a developement team that was nicknamed "The Dream Team" by Square (whose names and games will be saved for later when it won't be spotlighting some of the greatest games ever made), but this game is seriously the top of the mountain of RPGs and video games in general. It is ridiculous the talent that came together from their own seperate all-time-great series and created this masterpiece of a game.

I could seriously write pages and pages on this game and its legacy and everything that changed upon its release, but I'll just leave it at this game easily would have been justifiable at 1.1 and to be picked at 1.10 might just be the biggest steal in the entire draft...

Do you want it to be fourth generation or rpg? You can change it later.

Sorry, meant to bold 4th Gen., put it there for now.

I don't think Pac-Man is all that much fun either, but I was along the lines of thinking that Andy had, It holds the George Washington fan fare of Arcade games.

And damn you andy, My 1.1 was between Pac-Man (Arcade), Tecmo SuperBowl (NES), and Zelda (NES) God I love Tecmo, still play it to this day. I've got three diff cartridges that work to verying degrees, and for verying lengths of time lol

After wy too much thinking...I am gonna select my story line---because i don't really get into many of these type of games, so I want to be sure I pick something that interested me for this category. It is not 1 of my top games.

1.11---Metal Gear Solid (storyline)

This pick is what I thought about stealing. I knew you'd pick it.

It is the greatest game of all time...And I don't see how it didn't set out to be that... I mean, did you see the people that Square got to work together on that game? Its ridiculous... Also one of only a small handful of games I've played over and over and over again in my life, and most of those gamesa are already taken (Mario 1, Mario 3, Civ II, Zelda I, Chrono Trigger)...

I moved my 1.04 Super Mario Bros. 3 from Platformer to Third Generation.

I'm starting to make various lists and there are just way to many sleeper platformers for me to pick than third generation games, which would be my weakest knowledge area in the draft.

 Nintendo Seal of Quality is helpful... There are a TON of great NES games, its actually kind of ridiculous the percentage of NES games that are good...

I know, my problem is that I never owned a NES, so I have very little knowledge about many of the games besides the very top shelf ones. When platformers can be from any generation, it just opens up my options later on in the draft.

I agree. I really wish Square would take a break from the Final Fantasy franchise and maybe try to make a new Chrono game. I know there are many that feel that they would simply screw it up, but the original game would still be great and a bad 3rd game can't take that away.

as much as I wish I could get a new Chrono game...But it won't be the same if we don't have the same kind of "Dream Team" involved...Either way, I'd almost rather just have a similar "Dream Team" come together and make a game...Oh, and I'm also excited about the new Wii RPG (Last Story) by Hironobu Sakaguchi... He has directed 5 games in his career, and they were all called "Final Fantasy" (note: not worried about spotlighting those games since they've been named as existing through Final Fantasy VII's selection)... It looks really good, plus its on the Wii so I can get it...

I've been researching for the "worst Game" category...and WOW do I have some doozies... lol Its going to be AWESOME!!
This pick should be accompanied with video footage if you can find it, to help justify the pick. Especially if there is a great review of it.

I understand. I agree with your love of Chrono Trigger. I've only played a couple of RPGs that have sucked me in from the beginning. And Chrono Trigger was the first one to do that and hook me til the end. Most of them are a bit of a chore to start and get better as you move on. Those are the ones I have a hard time playing, as I sometimes get into something else during that starting period and I never return.

Role playing nowhere near what I expected it to be so far. Great picks (top 3) for their respective consoles / generations, for sure. For the RPG cat, though? Depends what else is picked, I suppose.

Will be interesting.

Probably should change the subtitle unless thats when you'll do a clock and now is just whenever a owner gets here they can make a pick.

That's how it is. On Monday we start using a clock. I just started the thread early because we had the people, but we were planned to have it going on Monday.

Is Chrono Trigger worth playing on the DS, or should I find a SNES somewhere?
It's essentually the same game, with the DS giving the option of having touch controls. You don't have to play the SNES version to fully enjoy it, as it's mostly unchanged from the original. Plus, you'll spend a lot less with the DS version, as the SNES version is rare to come by and highly sought after, so it comes with a high price tag.

DS version is the same game with, i believe, an added side-quest at the end and a post-game dungeon and some multi-player add-on that doesn't effect the game other than giving you mega powerful equiptment (no change to story)...the PSX version packed with another classic game is awesome, but you need an actual PSX to play it, you can't play it on a PS2 or it will freeze constantly and mess up your save data and stuff...

Only game I haven't heard of before that was selected is Chrono Trigger, as I wasn't a huge gamer back in the 90s. Is the fighting turn-based or real time? I've never been a fan of turn-based games, but if it's real-time I'll check it out on an emulator.

its both (you can turn active battle on and off) if I remember correctly...this is going to sound crazy, but play it even if you haven't played many turn based RPGs and it is more turn-based than you generally like, its that good...
