Greatest Video Game Draft 2011 (1 Viewer)

ET was even better because IIRC, Atari actually produced more copies of the game than there were Ataris in use in the US at the time - they expected the popularity of ET to literally spur sales. It's the game that really was the tipping point for the collapse.
:yes:that wasn't ET...

Anyone ever have one of those combo NES/SNES/Genesis consoles? My research for this draft is getting me amped to play the older gems.
Get yourself an emulator.
Not a fan of emulators, it just isn't the same. I can only play FPS's on computers besides one other game I'm not going to mention.
I agree it isn't the same, but if you play emulators with a controller (even a xbox 360 or playstation 3 one for example) it increases the enjoyment dramatically. And when you consider the amount of time and money it costs to find the old systems and the good games, there's just no beating the free emulators and roms that are out there imo.

I don't know if Bioshock is THE best game of the last decade because "best" is subjective. I know it's one of them though.

And it figures that Larryboy is "meh" about it. :goodposting:

3.04 The Legend of Zelda: A Link to the Past - SNES (Action/Adventure)

This game is IMO the second best Zelda game behind Ocarina of Time. This Zelda built on what was a classic from the NES and launched the franchise into the new generation of gaming. The hookshot, multi level dungeons, and parallel worlds were first introduced in this game. To this day it still looks and plays great.
This personally for me, was the ultimate Zelda. The story, the areas, the weapons, the dungeons, THE MUSIC! All were so incredibly detailed for a SNES game. The final battle was also cool. Something you didn't see at the time. I think this is a steal in the 3rd round.

You're right on the number of copies - that was a different game that I won't spotlight. I knew it was one of the two. Regardless, ET was a huge part of the collapse and was a financial disaster. Just pulling stuff off of Wikipedia...
E.T. is frequently cited as a contributing factor to Atari's massive financial losses during 1983 and 1984. As a result of overproduction and returns, unsold cartridges were also buried in a New Mexico landfill. The game's commercial failure and resulting effects on Atari are frequently cited as a contributing factor to the video game industry crash of 1983.
Despite sales figures, the quantity of unsold merchandise, coupled with the expensive movie license and the large amount of returns, made E.T. a financial failure for Atari.[21] Next Generation Magazine reported that Atari earned US$25 million in sales, but netted a loss of US$100 million.

Easily top 5 for me, maybe not #1. But again, my real gaming expertise is sports games, platformers, and linear FPS/3PS games....I've played and beaten only 1 true RPG ever, IIRC, and I know Larry is big into RPGs. It makes sense that he'd be "meh" about it, but IMO, it's a superb game. I know I'm not the "Best Story" judge, but it's got the single best storyline in any video game I've ever played.

Is it cheating to ask for the link of the other drafts. I would be interested in seeing those

I don't care about judging. I'm just taking stuff I like so I probably won't be sniping too much anyway

I still have my OG NES, n64, PS1, PS2 and Intellivision but that doesn't work anymore

I gave my genesis to my sister. Not sure if she has it still or not

This thread has me wanting to buy a Genesis just for NHL94
I just found out that NHL '94 is also on the SNES. It was released a good chunk of time after the Genesis version but is the same game with minor graphics increase. Its on my list of must buy now.

Has anyone else noticed a significant price increase in old-school games and game systems on eBay in the last few years?
Everything nostalgic has had a price increase. It's hard to believe we'll be nostalgic for the 2000's someday.
Dreamcast bundle for sale next month.
Dreamcasts go for around $100. I remember when you could get one for $10. ($100 new, btw. Thinkgeek sometimes gets them in stock. There are still new games produced for the Dreamcast.)

Here was a list of the Top 5 New Games for Old Consoles for 2010 (video). I highly doubt any of these games are on anyone's list. If they are, I apologize. If anyone has played any of these games, let us know your impressions.

I'm just very much not into the FPS/3PS games... like I have some ideas for what i'm going to draft for that category as I've played some of them... I'm just overall very, very meh about the entire genre...I don't know why, I just couldn't ever get into them...

3.06 - Yo Mama selects:

Galaga - arcade game

Many hours (and quarters) wasted on this one. With 2 arcade spots to fill, had to get one of the best ones out there.

3.07 Best Multiplier- Starcraft (pc)

"Nothing can compare to multiplier Starcraft simply because it is by far one of the most deepest and complex games of all time. With endless possible strategies for three different races, and a use for every unit of each race, Starcraft never ceases to amaze. Shooters may require some strategy and quick aiming, but they're little compared to the brainpower needed in Starcraft. EverQuest needs little thinking, only copious amounts of time to master, but Starcraft requires time, dedication, and ceaseless practice. Nothing matches it."

My pick for best multiplier would be "Rabbit"

"The last Metroid is in captivity. The galaxy is at peace…"

3.09 Super Metroid, 4th Generation, SNES 1994

The third of the three series that I play over and over yearly and never tire of it. Super Metroid fixes nearly every annoyance from the first Metroid, while retaining the classic run-and-gun gameplay that made the original a standout. The biggest additions are the world map that helps immensely in the backtrack-quests that are necessary to complete the game, and the ability to save your game at certain points, affording the ability to turn off the game without losing all your progress without using the (urgh!) password system. Once again, the story has Samus Aran fighting space pirates to reach the ultimate goal of defeating the leader of the Space Pirates and the brains behind the operation.

The ending is one of the best in gaming history.

Game Trailer

edit: After thinking about it, technically Metroid 2 for the Gameboy added the save feature, so I guess that shouldn't count. But it takes nothing from the game.

3.08 - super Mario world, snes, 4th generation

Right behind smbIII for me
Ahead of SMB3 for me. I think it was the perfect Super Mario Bros game. Good pick.
I like SMW better also, but what SMB3 did for gaming was the determining factor for me.Oh ya, I hate you for the 3.09.
Did you think I wasn't going to take this game? I recently changed my avatar to the ScrewAttack symbol, ffs!

HI

double

nice

I think this might deserve a spin-off thread. "Zero Suit Samus Cosplay" Google Searches - Best Idea Ever?
 I can think of other video game characters too, but they haven't been drafted yet.
Yep, you should make a "Who's Hottest" of the 10 best Cosplay chicks all as different characters.
I thought about doing that at E3, but every shot had an obvious winner in it. I wanted a good one that would be close.

While we're waiting, maybe we can talk about the most influential video game hardware, whether it be a console or a peripheral. It could be an on-going discussion in between picks and discussing games. What do ya say? Or should we hold off on that until Monday too?
