Greatest Video Game Draft 2011 (1 Viewer)

ROUND 1

1. PitbullTD - Pac-Man (Arcade)

2. biggamer3 - Super Mario Bros. (NES)

3. Andy Dufresne - Tecmo Super Bowl (NES)

4. madshot31 - Super Mario Bros. 3 (NES)

5. AcerFC - The Legend of Zelda (NES)

6. Yo Mama - Mario (Main Character)

7. wazoo11 - Civilization II (PC)

8. bmarks6161 - Fianl Fantasy VII (PS1)

9. Slax - Legend of Zelda: Ocarina of Time (N64)

10. larry_boy_44 - Chrono Trigger (SNES)

11. rikishiboy - Metal Gear Solid (PS1)

12. Mario Kart - Link (Main Character)

13. BlueDredSo - Tetris (NES)

This has got to be one of the most interesting first rounds I have ever seen in one of these things. Is it me or did more than a few of these folks pick VERY poorly? Mario Kart I have to say Link at 12 is a STEAL imho.

4.08 Yo Mama selects:

Fallout 3 (Seventh Generation)

I may move this to best story depending on how the rest of the draft goes.

Seen this in a number of top 10 ever lists.

I know people love this game, but I was not one of them. I don't like open worlds where I wander around for 45 minutes wondering where I'm supposed to go or what I'm supposed to do. And you can find yourself outmatched firepower-wise pretty quickly.Cool looking game though.

Touche my good man, touche. I hope you like my first four as much as you like my first. I know I do. I have a couple ways to go with my next two if they get to me and I look to have a couple Top 5's with those as well. We will see.

Gonna have to see how this unfolds but it seems that every pick is either a Home Run or a Head Scratcher not a whole lot of mediocre picks from what I can see. Cannot wait to see how this progresses. This is very much like a PGA even where you can't win on Thursday but you sure can put yourself out of the running. Mario you were right I do like your picks very strong for the categories but possibly a tad early for the draft.

I believe rounds 10-15 will be where the gems will be found and people will separate themselves.

Need two for each category. Its like drafting RB's early, there are more characters in play rather than games so going with top characters is key. I have mine and will see others scramble. My ideas for my next two picks are areas that are not touched nearly at all yet. I have three games on my radar right now but may need clarification as to their category. However, I might see how reaction goes to the category(ies) I place them in to come to a consensus.

4.07 Shadow of the Colossus- PS2- Action/adventure

"One of the best artworks seen in the history of video games, a graphic design that puts some of the new generation consoles to weep, and a totally new game play makes Shadow of the Colossus a gender-nondescript title. But Shadow of the Colossus has many more positive aspects, this was not one of the best games of all time.

Shadow of the Colossus is what many players have never played, and if they do they will never have a rich experience in quality as to what this game offers. It has everything a good game may have only faults which may vary according to the criteria of each player. Describe this game in one word? Epic."

:goodposting:

:lmao: I love this game. One of my all-time favorites.

I don't think any pick is as big as a head scratcher as one certain pick from the 3rd round of the previous video game draft. I'll let a few of you figure that one out.

4.06 Bowser - Best Villain

The King Koopa is probably the most recognizable and iconic villain of all time.

Bowser fight montage
Bowser = #1 on the Villain Big Board...
Taking a princess over and over equates to bad-### now? In most games Bowser has one hit point or possibly up to 3 hit points. Run under him, swing him into a fire, hit him with a fireball, run him into a spiked ball. All of these equate to not being a bad-###. Seph and Ganon would use Bowser as their pet. Hell, Bowser would be a hit man, and a pretty bad one, in either camp of Seph or Ganon. Bowser is weak when stacked up to these two. And, if Bowser is #1, how can you take Chrono Trigger, Final Fantasy III, Super Mario 64 and Donkey Kong before the undisputed #1 Villain? Tu es loco.
Chrono Trigger and Final Fantasy VI = #1 and 2 RPGs (and up there for Best STory and Best games of their generation)Super Mario 64 = arguably #1 platformer, arguably #1 game of its generation

Donkey Kong = one of the most important games ever created (saved NoA, got Miyamoto involved in Game Design instead of, basically box art, and made Nintendo a game company instead of a toy company)

:kicksrock:

Part of the villain category (like the hero category) is visibility and how recognizable they are... Bowser and Mario ARE video games...

4.10 Donkey Kong - Villain

"In Mario's first real videogame adventure, the guy played a carpenter named Jumpman who set off through the unfinished skyscraper scaffoldings to rescue his girlfriend Pauline from the clutches of a wild ape named Donkey Kong. All this beast wanted was a girlfriend, and did what any monkey brain would do: take what he wants. It just so happens that the one he wanted had a boyfriend determined to take her back. So what's an ape to do? Keep the boyfriend away!"

I'll take a PM on this please maybe a link to the thread/page or just what the pick was and why it's odd if it isn't obvious. I am just an observer in this so it will not affect anything.

Wow! Surprised he was picked as villain since he only seems hostile when Pauline's involved. And, I guess Mario windy toys.

Not sure if I'd bank on that quite yet.

4.11 - Mass Effect 2 - Best Story/Xbox 360

Possibly the best Sci-Fi universe created since Star Wars, it has interesting characters (hellloooo Miranda!), fun missions, great gameplay, gorgeous scenerey...EVERYTHING!

If the

doesn't get you jazzed to play this game, nothing will.I might shuffle KOTOR/Bioshock/ME2 between Story/7th Gen/Roleplay, but for now I'll put it in Best Story. It's like The Empire Strikes Back of video games.

He was one of the first true recognizable villain's in gaming. He was the original princess stealing villain and is a great main/villain pick depending on how things unfold.

If this were a Nintendo draft, quite possibly. But, the Nintendo bias shows. That is okay but not realistic.

 as much as DK was a great villain in Donkey Kong, I would say he fits best in the "Best Main Character" category as he is the title character in Donkey Kong (even as the villain), plus the title character in the Donkey Kong Country games and the Jungle Beat games...

add in his secondary roles in a huge number of other games, and he fits best as "Character" than as a straight up villain...

Yeah, I know. He could be taken either way. I had him pegged as a main character. But he's off the table either way.

Any SciFi genre video game wherein one of the characters sings "Modern Major General" from Gilbert & Sullivan's "Pirates of Penzance" is an automatic winner in my book.

Oh, and IGN named it their #1 game ever for the Xbox 360. For what that's worth...

Mario Kart is a great game but that does not mean I have a Nintendo bias. I am all for innovation and pushing the boundaries and will do so in this draft. I doubt I hit much more Nintendo with the rest of the draft as my knowledge spans each system pretty evenly, minus XBox. Just have to wait and see.

lol this whole draft is Nintendo biased, evidence?total picks: 50NES games: 7 (including #2-5 overall)SNES games: 6Nintendo Aracade games: 1N64 games: 3Gamecube games: 1Nintendo characters: 3 (out of 3)Nintendo villains: 3 (out of 4)the first round consisted of 1 Arcade game, 1 PC game, 2 PSX games, 2 Nintendo Characters, 5 NES games, a N64 game, and a SNES game. Also, only 2 of the Nintendo games drafted so far were made by a company other than Nintendo. We have, through 50 picks, drafted 6 first-part Nintnedo characters and 6 first party Nintendo games. Thats RIDICULOUS!!!other systems: PS2: 4PSX: 2PC: 4Arcade: 8 (1 made by Nintendo)the #1 and #2 consoles drafted so far (and likely overall) are the NES and SNES (NINTENDO), the #1 developer in this draft, the #1 game designer (Miyamoto with 7 games and 6 characters to his credit)... ALL NINTENDO!to say anyone in this draft is somehow more biased towards Nintendo than anyone else is ridiculous and, if anything, shows an anti-Nintendo bias more than showing any pro-Nintendo bias... Because, quite frankly, liking video games IS a pro Nintendo bias... This draft shows that...

Its an internal debate of "originality vs. innovation". You can like something because it was done first but more than likely it was done better given a time span. The Legend of Zelda is a great game because it was original however as the series progressed, the games became better through innovation. Granted, not many games regress in that manner however not many maintain their greatness either. Liking something because it is original is one thing but the story does not end there but some like to think it does.

I am out of here pretty soon but the draft clock will probably stop before my pick comes up. I will be home around 11:30 central time so if Blue wants to PM me his picks, I could pick for him after I take mine in the 5th and then pick his turn in the 5th/6th and continue with my 6th pick at that time tonight. I am thinking my pick will come at some time tonight but will not be able to pick until 11:30.

Just giving the heads up to everyone.

I was writing a response to this and got side-tracked...The preceived "Nintendo bias" of the draft is there because Nintendo has been around for each generation that is available in this draft. And other than the 1st generation, they have always been around, although not in a hardware sense in the 2nd generation, unless you are counting the Game and Watch, and their earlier hardware attempts that weren't perceived well (I can't recall the names of those at the moment). As someone mentioned early in the thread, Nintendo's Seal of Approval has really made an impact, and it has. It's not bias towards Nintendo, it's bias towards good games.I should also add that most of Nintendo's AAA titles have been console exclusive titles. You can't find a lot of those games on another console.

That's actually kind of what I was saying... the NES and SNES are probably going to be the top 2 drafted systems... Their main competition (Genesis and Master System) are probably going to barely be noticed... Nintendo is gonig to be the most drafted game developing company, and Miyamoto will be involved in more games chosen than anyone else... That isn't a result of bias by me or anyone else, its because, simply put, they're good...

I think a lot of this has to do with age. It seems that the avg FBG is in his 30's, which would put them in the sweet spot of those early consoles. I'm 44 - I was into chicks and beer when those early consoles hit, and the whole thing seemed very kiddish. Mario? Meh. Besides sports games, I avoided most console stuff. I liked video games the entire time, mind you, but I didn't fully embrace consoles until Xbox 360, really. I have since gone back to some of the better RPG's and such on the pre-360 consoles, and yea, some were pretty good (so don't worry - I get that some Final Fantasy's/etc are worthy and all that.)

:thumbup:I'm kind of surprised at the focus on old games with all the picks so far. Very few newer games selected.

CALL OF DUTY 4 Modern Warfare (Xbox 360 Shooter)

Best First Person Shooter i ever played, and really put COD on the map into the behemoth it is today

2 hours is way too long between picks.
Yep - we've found that out the hard way in other drafts. 2hours + makes it seem like there is 0 urgency, so there were lots of days where only 4 or 5 picks were taken. Even an hour is pushing it for the middle or ends of drafts as all the big name things have been drafted.

I'm beginning to think so too.I hope biggamer3 is ready to pick.
I am ready, i will leave my pick with someone now if he doesnt pick in a few mins
2 hour timer is up. madshot isn't here, but I assume all it would take is one of the judges to say to skip and you can pick. Or, of course, you could just pick.Nevermind. You were the last to pick. He still has 20 minutes. I was thinking Andy Dufresne was the last to pick. I'm gonna sit over here in the corner and be quiet now.

And anyway, it's not like a fantasy football draft, where there's a big difference between players picked at certain spots. There's plenty of video game titles to go around, so if you time out and miss out on a couple it's not that huge of a deal - pick another.
