Green Bay Packers Thread (2 Viewers)

Was in the car so didn't get to watch...just listened to Wayne on the sirrius app as I drove.

Seems like an odd game.  Defense was defending shorter fields in the first half and held up ok.   Not great, but certainly ok without Jaire.  Better than I expected.  Chase still made huge plays.  But a little more pressure at times was nice to hear.

Offense in the 2nd half...did they just go conservative?  I recall a drive after maybe a long Adams catch where they had 1st and goal and went with 2 Dillon runs before an incomplete pass and FG.  This seems to be an issue on the season...settling for FGs at times even when the D gets a stop.  Happened in SF when they get the turnover and have a chance to go up 2 scores...and instead kick a FG and SF got the TD to go ahead.  That has to stop.  If this defense gets some stops...offense needs to step up even more.    Had they lost yesterday...hard to have put that on the defense who forced pressure and turnovers and a few stops (and faced shorter fields in the first half).  It would have been the Offense (and obviously kicking).

Crosby at least put it behind him enough to make the last kick...but man that sounded ugly (and the replays I saw looked ugly).

But...got the win...and seems they got out without more injuries (and with what the league looked like yesterday on my injury alerts and my fantasy teams...that is a big thing)

The big credit I do still want to give is to both the players and coaching on the Oline.  To already be doing well without Jenkins and Bahktiari...now Myers out.  Credit to all those guys still getting it done.

Sums up Rodgers vs the Bears.  He just dominates this series similarly to Favre before.  And seriously...if anyone is still holding on to some notion that Rodgers is not all in and into it this year...I think such people need to get their eyes checked.

Was it a great clean game?  Not at all.    But a road division win against a rival.  I will always take those.

Run game looks great.  Another nice two headed monster in the backfield.  Davante is still ridiculously good.  Good to see lazard getting back involved.  Got one piece back on the Oline (well, got 2 back but Myers left again).  Just need Royce to not let really good Dlinemen go free.

D held up ok but that is a bad offense.  Redzone defense still is just putrid.  I think they have given up a TD on every drive into the redzone from opponents.

Seeing some more pass rush.  Clark making an impact which is nice to see.

Need to get that secondary healthy though...man its a M.A.S.H. unit out there.

Well...another win...but hard to concentrate on that on the quick turn around with the Davante Covid news and possible other positives we don't know about yet (as some have speculated).

It was already an uphill battle with a Thursday game on the road against what is likely the best team in the NFC...with the injuries the Packers already have.  But take out now the best WR in the game and it seems like too much to overcome.

To be missing possibly Bahktiari still (or in his first game back), Jaire, Z'darius, Adams, maybe Myers.  Those are top level players being out (plus a rookie C).  I mean, MVS is not even 100% to suit up.

As for the Washington game.  Another uglyish win...but still a win.  OL looked shaky early missing protections.  Run game was non-existant.  But credit to Rodgers and LaFleur for continuing to adjust to the situation.  Quicker passes, Davante, getting Lazard and Tonyan involved.  Even EQ on a jet sweep.

Defense played a little better...I will say the positive there is that they seem to get "star" like production out of a key player each week.  It has been Kenny Clark at times...this past weekend it was Gary who stood out looking like what people have wanted him to be since he was drafted.  If they can get healthy in the secondary...Mercilus bring them anything...this could be a pretty good defense.  Not great...but solid   The steal of the year seems to be getting De"Vondre Campbell off the street this summer.  Nice to see solid play from the MLB spot.

Also..can someone coach the FG blocking scheme?  Please?

Hey Packers fans, I was looking for A. Jones thread but couldn't find it --  what's synopsis of his down game?  just bad game script? seemed close enough to warrant more runs...?

Washington sucked at defending the pass so they went after that weakness rather than run at a talented defensive line?  Just a guess.

Strange game but a great and gritty win Thursday night.

First off...LaFleur.  There are complaints to be made about the calls at the goalline (and I had an issue with how they played the end of the 1st half)...but overall gameplan, its hard to criticize being that short handed and going in and really controlling the game.  If they can just get to a Super Bowl, he will get that national recognition.  For now we have to listen to how great Shannahan is still.

Rodgers...again a gutty win.  Throwing to guys they just elevated and he has not a whole lot of trust with.  And they didn't often give him a reason to with some drops the other night and lining up wrong.  But again, if someone wants to ever claim the guy is not all in to win games...show them that 3rd down run after the delay of game penalty when he tries to get to the endzone.  The guy just wants to win.  And the more you hear him talk...it seems like he is warming to the idea of staying in GB.  Still not going to dwell much on that and just enjoy the season...but how he and LaFleur work with each other, it seems it would be a wise move.  Oh...and seems he was right about Cobb still having something to offer to the team.  It may not show up every game...but when it does, its important.  Having that guy that he has a great relationship with and trusts is important.

Run game....love the 1-2 punch of Dillon and Jones.  Not sure what happened last week...but they were needed this week and came through.  Wish they would trust them even in bad fronts at the goalline to power through...as we saw both show power Thursday night when hit at the near the line and push forward for yards or a score.

Defense...for so much of the game they really controlled things well too.  Turnovers...getting pressure on Murray...and holding up the run game.  Yeah...they stumbled a bit late against the quick paced offense.  And benefitted from AJ Green and Murray not being on the same page.  But they pressured well...and made plays when needed against an offense that I think many of us thought would throw up 30+ on them.

If Jaire can make it back in a month or so...and if the tweet from Za'Darius meant anything.  This defense could come around to being fun to watch.  De'Vondre Campbell is such a great addition giving GB something they have not had in so long at MLB.

The negatives...obviously the injuries.  Tonyan was finally starting to see more pass routes open up for him with the line starting to come back healthy.  Gets a big gainer and is now out.  Sucks for him.  And that hit on Hill on the kickoff was awful.  Kid has talent...made a mistake coming out of the endzone and paid a very bad price for it.  Hope he can heal up and come back strong next year.

Have to give a lot of credit to Gutey for this team.  It has character and toughness and depth in many positions.

Wow what a victory.  LaFleur now has the best win percentage in the modern era.  Only some coach from the 20s ahead of him.

The delta between LaFleur and McCarthy is noticeable almost every game.

Super Bowl or bust this year.  I’m hoping they add a veteran TE.

Jaylon Smith and Whitney Mercilus didn’t really show up at all against the Cardinals.  I hope they can contribute down the stretch alongside Z and Jaire.

Well that was interesting.

I would not put that game all on Love.  Though, he was not great either.

LaFluer early has to take a ton of blame there.  Not sure the game plan to keep dropping him back as KC brings heavy pressure down after down.  And then some of the runs reminds me of the thing that annoys me with Wisconsin.

Love was inconsistent...made some decent plays...and some just flat out yuck.  Can tell he is not on the same page as Adams... He will get a small pass given the short prep time to be starter this week, a tough environment and all (as well as the Oline play).

Oline...probably their worst game.  Were not opening up many holes as far as the run game.  And allowed Love to be harassed and hit all day long.

Special Teams...was Maurice Drayton allowed on the plane back?   How long can they keep him.  You can't keep having similar mistakes all year long.  To not be able to trust getting a FG off anymore.  To have a muffed punt almost turned over...another was turned over when Malik Taylor gets pushed down and the ball hit them.  They cost the team 9 points in that (the two missed FGS...and the one the Chiefs got after the turnover on the punt return).  With all else that happened...they basically lost the game on special teams.

Injuries...losing Stokes before the game and Clark early on...how many more losses can the D take.

That said..the D stepped up.  Yeah, KC is a mess.  But down all the guys they have been, then two more...the D stepped up and kept them in that game the whole time.  Krys Barnes was all over the place yesterday...where did that come from?  Sideline to Sideline made that huge hit at the pylon...stuffed guys in the hole.  He was really good yesterday.

Had nice pressure on Mahomes...stopped the run.  The D all around played well save for one thing.  The few times Kelce was just wide open on play action.  I think it was Campbell who bit several times (including the TD).  Not going to bash him too much as he has been great this year...but can't keep doing that.

Obviously...have to hope Rodgers only has to sit the 10 games and he is back next week.

Thankfully the league was all over the place again (Rams and Cowboys losing).

Now...after that said.  Get past this covid stuff with Rodgers...barring other things...what do we have going forward.

Get Bahktiari back...the offense should be fine.  They have found something with the rotation of RBs...keep the WRs healthy and the offense should be quite good.  Losing Tonyan will hurt...but keeping the others healthy and getting the OL healthy will be a huge plus.

Defense has surprised and played pretty darn well.  They are getting pressure on the QB....even guys like King when he has played have played pretty well in the secondary.  MLB now seems like a strength for the first time in a long time.  All that without Jaire, without ZaDarius.   Concern with a warm up injury to Stokes' knee...but they seem to think it won't be long term.  Hopefully Clark's issue isn't too bad.  If they can get some of those guys back...this D should be stout combined with a good offense.

Obviously the concern is the same as a negative from above.  Special Teams is a mess.  Snapping, holding, blocking.  All of it.  Not sure how long it will be til Cobb is back as a returner just to make a fair catch?

A few quick thoughts and I will post more later:

Devondre Campbell was such a low key signing, but he is the best player on a surprising defense. Love watching him play.

Kris Barnes - keep bringing that intensity it’s infectious - he plays angry.

Jordan Love - nothing good to say about his game. He needs to recognize blitz (they only blitzed him non stop). Find the hot receiver pre snap and get the ball off.  Woefully inaccurate on many of his passes. If he goes into next season as the one or two qb - it is going to delay the rebuild greatly.

Deguara - I like what little I saw of him. Would like to see him way more involved in the pass game.

Davante Adams - he tried to hide his frustration but this game solidifies he will be walking after this year. He was open multiple times and love didn’t even get the ball to him with a chance to catch.

The lack of push in the middle on passing downs is so frustrating and I don’t know how it can be solved at this point in the season. Watching Lancaster rush the passer is painful.

TJ Slaton - he had to play way too many snaps because of injury - but he is going to be a solid rotational DT. Very nice draft pick.

Tough to write Love off after his first start in the NFL. Seems a little bit of a knee jerk reaction. 24 hours later and I'm wondering what kind of game plan they had. The week before when they were down their 3 top WRs they went run-heavy. Yesterday they had 34 pass attempts and 25 rushing attempts (5 of which were by Love, not sure how many were actually designed). And in a game where KC brought the house on just about EVERY play I don't think we threw a single quick slant play, zero WR screens, can't remember a draw play, absolutely nothing to slow down the pass rush. Love certainly has work to do but I saw nothing there to give up on the guy after 1 game. To me he looked like a guy that needs experience. And needs to build chemistry with his WRs. Hass he played a meaningful snap with the starting WRs before? GB sits ALL their starters during pre-season games so he gets no reps there. Can't imagine he gets many reps in practice with them either.

Whiffed on Gilmore

Whiffed on OBJ

Meanwhile Rams understand that when you have a short window you go all in - grabbing Von Miller and OBJ.

This front office is maddening.

So another game another win.  Even in a strange way.

Seemed clear Rodgers did not have timing down or things were not just clicking.  He missed several times on guys.  Lazard on the deep ball he let it float into the safety.  Another screen/dump off to Jones was behind him (would have gone for nice yardage).  And the concerning one was off to Adams that led to him getting hit pretty good.  Thankfully he was ok.  I expect that will get cleaned up getting back to practice together this week.

Playcalling wise...it almost looked like they wanted to get Rodgers going or something...letting him throw a lot.  And it seemed a pattern of shotgun runs or playfakes when Jones was in there...under center power runs for Dillon early on.  Things did not work til later in the game when they opened things up by getting Jones the ball on screens and passes and then running more as well.

Offense sputtered so much of the night it would be easy to complain about them...and they deserve it for several quarters.  But also have to praise them for finally finishing out a game late.  Sustained drives for TDs in the 4th quarter rather than just relying on defense to make the stop.  That was encouraging at least.

Defensively...Russ obviously still hurting and not confident...but they shut that team down.  There was no real threat all night.  DBs were all over the WRs (King and Stokes played quite well) and Savage and Amos on the backend also doing great work.  Amos having a great year and going a bit under the radar with his play.

Pass rush came in different ways.  Hate seeing the injuries though.  Have not heard how long for Merciuls.  Gary sounds like he is going to try to put a brace on and go?  I caught the tail end of that being talked about on the radio.

Jones knee looks like he dodged serious injury there.  Likely out til after the bye as cautious as they typically are.

FG unit is still a mess.  This time looked like the snap and hold were ok...but its all in timing and in Crosby's head too.  Not sure how they fix that midseason.

Jones had curiously low use at the beginning of the game.  Was that at all related to his injury?

No…he wasn’t hurt til late.
They typically alternate series but he seemed almost more of a “decoy” in that they passed a lot on his downs.

I never would have believed these guys could be a shutdown defense under Barry.  Early on it looked like a disaster in the making.  It actually took me a while to catch on to how well they are doing.  Sometimes it takes a while to accept something when you are pretty sure the opposite is what's actually happening. My bad.  Now if they ever get the special teams under control I might take me a few years to come to grips with that.

Lots of crow being eaten by critics of Joe Barry, Kevin King and others these days, myself included.

I think you have to throw Gutenkust in here a well. Not surrounding Rodgers with enough playmakers? Lots of criticism of him picking Dillon last year. Lots of criticism of bringing King back.

Yes...definitely a lot I was wrong about with this team.

Hope Gutey can also admit to being wrong trying to push Aaron out...but worry about that after the season.  Just enjoying the ride and hoping they can again overcome the injuries on D.

Maybe he can get some type of conditional 5th round pick for J Love

I'm terrified of the thought of needing to rely on Crosby in the playoffs. There's a long time between now and then, so hopefully he can right the ship, but he's missed 7 of his last 15 FG attempts. 🤮

Well that sucked.

Defense finally fell on its face...is it just too many injuries?  Or injuries in the wrong place (pass rush).  Seemed so in a way that Cousins had time much of the day.  Secondary had a bad day with guys wide open...Savage having 3 possible INTS...dropping two of them and the other coming back due to roughing the passer.  They definitely had a down game.

Good to see the offense finally getting on track later in the game...still taking so long to get into rhythm which does not help the D.  And not sure when that gets better as Rodgers isn't likely to practice again this week with the toe...

And yet another injury to a key player in Jenkins.   And what looked like getting Bahktiari back soon, suddenly that talk slowed down last week as he didn't practice (rumors of swelling in the knee still).  Teams deal with injuries...I get that.  But losing guys that are your top 5 and top 10 core players is hard to keep overcoming.  (Bahktiari, Z Smith, Jaire, Aaron Jones, Gary, now Jenkins)  Need to get some of those guys back in the next few weeks.  And never a great time to lose a great OLineman...but with that defensive front coming next week...really really bad.

And once again...the kicking game has an error on a short FG.  Crosby seems to have zero confidence even when the operation seems to go right with the snap and hold.  Not sure anyone up there or us fans have much confidence when things come down to kicking right now.

Yet another win against the Bears...though some ugliness in this game.

Special Teams...just flat out ugly.  They had seemed to be doing better in coverage this year as things went on.  But last night...FG/Extra Point unit was the best part of special teams.  Muffed punt (bailed out on the penalty)...MVS muffing the onsides kick.  Kick and punt returns for big yards.  A shanked punt.  Malik Taylor trying to field that kick and giving up field position.  Just so many errors on special teams.  Id put a lot of even the first half on them giving up field position to the Bears.

D settled down in the 2nd half and got some push up front.  But some concerns there giving up big plays and poor angles.  Maybe they were just flat early on and going through the motions.  But have to clean that up.

Secondary wise...if they can get Jaire back...you have to feel pretty good about the top corners.  Stokes and Douglas played quite well...even King has had a decent year.  They get in a little trouble when its Sullivan or Black trying to keep up with people.

Offense...Id have liked to see more running earlier in the game.  They went pass happy early trying to hit big plays and it seemed to amount to negative plays on 2nd down the first few drives.  Was nice to see some production out of the TEs last night.  Just cannot keep getting hurt on the OL.  Have to give Gutey and the coaching credit there as they don't seem to miss a beat much even losing so many guys.  I mean the only preferred starter out there is the rookie Royce Newman.  They are on their 4th and 5th tackles right now.  At some point you would think its a breaking point..really hope we don't find out where that is.

Ho hum...another year...another division title...another #1 seed.  Another season of at least 13 wins for LaFleur.  Likely another MVP for Rodgers.  And quite frankly...should Gutekunst be executive of the year with the moves made and guys they have brought in to keep the OLine funtioning and functioning well?

Now all week we will get the "do they rest them" speculation on Rodgers and others.

My thoughts...he will want to get in a series or so.  Possibly a full quarter.  More for the reps he isn't getting practicing at the moment.    Though...Id have no issue sitting him and Davante and some others.  Probably let Gary and/or Preston Smith and Clark taking a break.

Anyway...the game and last few...its not always pretty, but it just keeps working  That connection Rodgers and Adams have is special.  They are just so damn good.  So many times you watch it...not sure how you stop it.

A nice 1-2 punch with Jones and Dillon.  Hoping it doesn't get too predictable that Dillon is the pound between the tackles guy and Jones is going to try and bounce outside.

Lazard growing that trust with Rodgers can only be a good thing for Green Bay going forward.

Defensively...not going to read much into that game with that backup QB.  They did what they needed to do.

Another good from last night..in the cold...special teams looked pretty good (outside of the one shanked punt).  Moore did ok on returns...FG unit worked (even with a wonky hold).  Crosby seems to have gotten his stuff back together.  Hope that holds up.

So now we know its the 9ers on Saturday Night.  A matchup that seems to worry plenty of people.

The interesting thing will be how GB integrates the players that have been out.  We saw Bahktiari and Myers come in and play and seemed to do quite well after their long layoffs (Bahktiari getting winded though is a concern...).  What rolls will Billy Turner have?  Z'darius Smith, Merciulus, Jaire Alexander?

The good with the OL is that the reserves showed they are very capable and have that experience coming in and playing.

With the 2 LBs...sub package stuff if they are active.  I mean it has to be better having Z out there than Tipa Galeai?

Jaire is interesting as the secondary has been really good at times...but given up big plays as well.

Will be watching to see how Bosa and Warner deal with their injuries leading up to the game on Saturday.

As a Niner fan, this game scares me. Green Bay already beat us once this year, and even though we've beaten them in the playoffs the last 3 times we've played them, only one time was recent (in 2019, the previous 2 were in 2012 and 2013 when Harbaugh was our coach). Green Bay has beaten us the last 2 times we played in the reg season (2020 and 2021), so Im sure Rodgers' confidence is pretty high coming into this game.

Kinda surprised that the line only opened at -4.5. Up to 5.5 already, but that still seems a little low. In addition to the 13 days off and home field for GB, SF will be traveling again on a 6 day turnaround. A 10 point Pack win sounds about right.

Its the gimme of the week in my opinion. This could be another KC/Pit to me, where as soon as SF falls behind, they are done for.

Also, fun Packers stat. In the 3 seasons Matt LaFleur has been the HC, the Packers have 37 turnovers. For comparisons sake, the Giants had 30 in just 2021. Remarkable job by LaFleur, and another reason he should win coach of the year.

Two players on offense played with heart:

Aaron Jones

Davante Adams

And I have nothing negative to say about the D, they played lights out.

I’ll write more later but goodbye Aaron Rodgers - you looked like you could care less this game. Hope he doesn’t play another down for this team.
