Green Bay's Transition to a 4-3 and What It Means for 2014 (1 Viewer)

Rob Demovsky - Green Bay Press Gazette, Sportswriter
So far this year, Clay Matthews has rushed 72.5% of opp dropbacks Last year: 84.5% 2012: 84.4% 2011: 77.5% 2010: 78.5% 2009: 70.1%
GREEN BAY, Wis. – It was third-and-4 from the Green Bay Packers' 29-yard line in the first quarter of Sunday's game against the New York Jets, and Clay Matthews lined up in the middle of the defense, nearly 4 yards from the football. He blitzed up the middle and hit Geno Smith in 2.4 seconds just as the Jets quarterback released the ball, which would turn into a touchdown pass to Eric Decker.

Matthews hasn't rushed as much through two games in 2014 as he has in the past.
It was a prime example of one way defensive coordinator Dom Capers is using Matthews in his new 4-3 front. But it's not the only way.

Really? I see a lot of 2 man lines in passing situations and more DB's, like in the past.

Interesting note on Matthews though.

Yes, they played a lot of 2 man line with 3 safeties but they did that a lot in the past. Hyde is hurt now(should start) but wonder if they were grooming him to do what Woodson used to.

They are playing a lot of 4 man line today, but it's 2 D-linemen, Mathews and Peppers on the line with 2 ILB's and 5 DB's with 3 safeties much of the time.

In the past they did a lot of 2 man line but didn't play the OLB on the line so much. It's always a hybrid with Capers.
