Grimaldi 's Pizza...and Subs of Yesteryear (an EG production) (1 Viewer)

Just took the family out to dinner.  $75 plus tip for a salad, large 3 topping pizza, small 3 topping pizza, 3 mountain dews and a tiramisu

Might be the worst value chain restaurant I've ever been to.  Pizza wasn't even that good

Never had it but probably another case of something good ruined by franchising. You wouldn't believe how fat/awesome Jersey Mike's subs were back when they had 2 shops.

I love sub shops, so tell me a little about JM’s back in the day.

To the op - that’s a lot of $ for pizza!

Meat was an inch thick on the sandwich. These days, maybe 1/4 the amount if you're lucky. A Giant had to have a pound of meat on it, lasted 2 meals. What you get now is a shell of its former greatness. Bread baked on site, all cold cuts sliced to order, which may still be the case, I'm not certain.  Best sub shop ever (except maybe White House in AC.)

Sorrento’s in Freehold??

Sorrento's is (was?) the bomb. I actually used to prefer Jersey Mike's (it was damn near across the street in the Foodtown on 33) but the Pig Special at Sorrento's was definitely a go-to. If it's still there and still the same, I'd take it 10 times out of 10 over today's Jersey Mike's.

It is still there, I haven’t been there in a long time. I forgot about the pig special. Damn, now I’m hungry.

Is the original shop still open?

I love shops that pile the meat on but very few do today.

Hang on. Grimaldi's of Brooklyn is franchised outside this area? There's one here in Hoboken but I had no clue it went beyond here.

Speaking of Jersey subs, EG you ever hit Tastees in Edison or down by Princeton? A super and a tuna would surely be part of any last meal on Earth.

Only comp to White House IMO.

Supposedly, the Grimaldi’s in the Phoenix area are run by relatives of the one under the Brooklyn Bridge. I’ve been to both, and while the Brooklyn Bridge Grimaldi’s is amazing, the phoenix ones aren’t horrible.

And I love the “franchised” Jersey Mike’s. Still a damn good sub.

Can't speak much to the cost (is what it is, and while not cheap I never thought Grimaldi's especially expensive either, especially when in more touristy areas with similar cost chains), but in my experience there is a lot of inconsistency from location to location.

They had two on Long Island, one was nearly on par with the original in Brooklyn, one sucked and closed. There's one near me in Uptown Dallas, it's really good and I'll go there once a month for decent pizza (and one of the two better/best options in Dallas, both near me, the other being more traditional NY street / slice pizza by a family from Brooklyn

Little Kings in Hamilton. So so good.

There's five in Vegas. I've been to three. I've never had the original in Brooklyn. I was excited to read how true they are (supposed to be) to the original. The one in the Venetian was one of the top ten pizza's I've had. The one south west on Rainbow was identical, so good. This past week I went with a couple others to the one in Henderson and it was okay, but nothing like the other two. Oh well.

I went to the original Grimaldi's once. John's on Bleecker is better in every way.
Well, Grimaldi's has not been owned by The Grimaldis for what, 15 years? More? I I haven't been to the original Grimald's since before then.

And I don't mean the split with Pasty way back and that branch of the tree, also with some really good and some notta so good results through the years.

My understanding is that someone bought the rights to open them outside the tri-state area, so the ones in NY-NJ-CT? are owned by the original owner (or whoever he sold to there). The ones everywhere else are owned by this other family.

I believe the original Grimaldi's people now run Juliana's, right down the street from Grimaldi's, and the pizza at Juliana's is the original Grimaldi's recipe. I know there was some serious pizza recipe/location drama at some point.

But is the Brooklyn Grimaldi's now a chain?

I went to Juliana’s in the summer.

Wiki, fwiw:

A chain of four Grimaldi's Pizzeria restaurants, including the original Brooklyn Bridge restaurant, is located through the greater New York City area.[2]

Two more locations, operated by former Patsy Grimaldi partner Sean McHugh, are located in Hoboken, New Jersey.[3]

The largest chain of Grimaldi’s Pizzeria restaurants, operated independently by Frank Ciolli and his family, has locations in Alabama, Arizona,[4] California, Colorado, Florida, Idaho, Kansas, Louisiana, Michigan, Nevada,[5] South Carolina, Tennessee, Texas, and Virginia.[6][7

I was there maybe 7 or 8 years ago. The pizza was good, very similar to the margherita pies I make on the BGE. But I hated the communal seating with everyone jammed shoulder to shoulder into long tables and we happened to be seated next to two really obnoxious girls who had me tempted to jam napkins in my ears.

I've never had pizza nearly as good as John's. Especially that first slice, still piping hot with liquefied cheese. The first bite of John's pizza is a moment I'll remember for the rest of my life. And you can relax with a carafe of wine and enjoy the atmosphere and good conversation. That place is the ultimate NYC spot for me.
