Grossman looking towards free agency (1 Viewer)

Actually, the thrust of the article is that he probably will sign with the Bears if he plays well this year. I don't see that he is looking toward free agency, but just acknowledging that it is a possibility.

If he plays well, the Bears will take care of him. They've spent wisely enough in advance (Vasher, Tillman) to make sure they won't have too many important FA's to sign at the end of the season. At worst, they'll franchise him to make sure they keep him.

QB is too highly paid to franchise a guy not worthy of that money IMO.I'd bet franchise tag would pay him double what most of us think he should get (relative value to other QBs)

I doubt they franchise him. Woudn't they have to pay him the average of top 5 in his position if they do? Thats way too much for one and a half good years. I think Grossman re-signs with the bears for a 3 year deal if he plays well. The Bears stuck with him and his injuries for 2 years and have been behind him all the way. I doubt he does that to the Bears.

I am sure there may be some cap cuts that none of us can predict at this point, but as of now, there are no good options at QB via free agency next year. Rex may be able to take advantage of this.

If thats the case, who will pay him more mney then the bears? Who will he 'test' the market with?

If I understand right, the franchise tender is for the average of the top 5 at his position -- for one year. Without ready access to the numbers, I'd guess a long-term deal would easily have double that money (or more) in guarantees. For a one-year deal, it's not so bad for the Bears, if Rex shows something this year (even if not quite "top 5"). If Rex is good this year, my guess is he signs long-term with the Bears without it ever getting to the "tagging" stage. If it does get that far, I see no reason why the Bears wouldn't tag him.
