Guardian cap helmet - do they work? (1 Viewer)

Very few players wear them. Why? Either...
1) The players know they don't reduce the chance of a concussion
2) The helmet is uncomfortable to wear
3) The players care more about looking good than playing it safe

Are there other options I am missing? FWIW, I think the answer is option 3

Good article below. Bottom line is they have statistics that say they help and statistics they say they dont. I like the high school data. Seems legit to me. In the end, who knows, but my comment sense logic says they help. Do car bumpers help? If I'm trying to protect my head why wouldn't I want a little extra padding? I am not a doctor or trained in this field to offer any educated advice. Its all my opinion as a keyboard warrior who lives life.

I don't think we really know the answers yet. Even if they offer protection, think about how long it took cowboys to wear flak jackets and helmets while riding massive bulls, baseball players to wear batting helmets, hockey players to wear face masks, and the list goes on. Some of it is bravado, some of it is bullying, some of it is habit, and that's with PROVEN technology. The guardian helmet is not that, yet.

In the case of guardian caps, we don't even know if they work yet. Remember the giant helmets Kelso and Welker wore? They never really gained any traction. Guardian caps remind me of those, although more players seem to be trying the guardian caps and as more players try them, we'll get more data and see if they really do the job. The neck bands players like Kincaid wear are also supposed to help prevent concussions and I'm seeing more of those this year. I noticed Achane was wearing a guardian cap last week. Hopefully Tua gives it a shot as well. He should be the ultimate test.

If real world evidence supports the use of this type of equipment, the NFL will eventually be forced to mandate it and take the choice out of players' hands.
