Guess the scam here - and what should I do? (1 Viewer)

the moops

Got a fence built this summer. Reputable company. Did a decent job. Took a little longer than they said, and the guys seemed slightly incompetent, but we are mostly pleased with what we got, and we did get a somewhat odd fence put up.

We paid 2 grand up front. Rest would be invoiced when completed. Estimate was for $3900 + taxes on materials. Fence is completed in August. No invoice in September. None in November.

Get a text 4 days ago from "Steve" who was project manager or something like that. "Hey moops, I was cleaning my desk and came across your invoice. I'll take 50 bucks off if you can that invoice by tomorrow."

I say cool, and ask how much it is, and ask to see an actual copy of it so I can make sure it all adds up. He sends it to me, all looks good, I tell him I'll pay by the end of the week.

He texts today and says that he wants to come by and pick up a check. I say sure, if you take that $50 off like you said, I can have a check after work. He says no problem, but he will have to pick it up tomorrow. And oh, make sure to make ti out to "Steve XXXXX" personally.

Obviously this raises flags, so I get home and text him back and say, "oh sorry, my wife mailed that check in this morning (she did not)". He responds with a "what address did you send it to?". I say to the address listed on the estimate from XXXX Fence Co. He has not responded.

So, did he get fired and is trying to get this money for himself? Does he thing that cause it sat unpaid for 3 months that his boss doesn't know, and he is trying to get the cash for himself?

Do I call the owner and tell him whats up?

Just get your wife to send that check in the morning to the company address and be done with it. No sense getting involved in all of their drama.

It's pretty clear Steve isn't doing this through the company. Offer a 50:50 split with Steve to make the invoice disappear. Save Steve's text as blackmail, take out a cashiers check from your bank account for the work amount exactly. DO NOT DEPOSIT THAT MONEY BACK INTO ANY ACCOUNT. SPEND IT SLOWLY SO IT CANNOT BE TRACKED. Have Steve cash it somewhere with a camera and give you half. If Steve doesn't make the invoice disappear you paid the entire amount to Steve. The company will not be able to go after you. Best to have him cash it somewhere like a bank that is likely to save their videos.

My SIL recently spent a few weeks in a psych ward and nearly spent a few months in jail after her 3rd dui and a child endangerment charge. And she is now sober so not fun at all. FYI

To the point of the OP, if you think it's a scam it usually is. And even if it isn't, it's ok if you think it is.

People buy insurance annuities all the time, you wouldn't be the first.
