Guy in my league is asking for help...draft is this weekend (1 Viewer)

1st off I am always willing to help most of my leaguemates up to about a week before the draft then I keep mostly everything to myself. Not to mention half of them come in here and see what I am up to well ahead of time.

I am drafting in the 4 slot this weekend...we have a mix of Sharks and sheep in this league. All of the teams in slots 1-6 are in the same division. This guy is at #11...so what he takes or does not take doen't affect me so much. I want to be a good guy but what exactly do I tell him...I like Portis?

He is driving for both of us on Sunday...45 minute drive to the bar...and he is the desgnated drive by default because he is having "Head Shots" taken on Wednesday and must detox...only in LA right?

I could tell him based on ADP who will be available when he picks...not sure if that is telling him much...I could also pick his brain and get an idea for what some of these people are doing in the 1st-5th rounds of the draft...could help me a much as it helps this guy.

What would you all do?

Print a couple of draft lists, wish him luck, and watch his team kick your team's ### all season. That always seems to be the way it works.

I think the phrase "head shots" pretty much spelled out the guy's future :lmao:

I'd tell him to corner the market on Defenses for the first 8 rounds and then proceed to pick the rest of the backup RBs (MoMauris, MoWilliams, MoGreen, MoLarryNCurly, InTheMidnightHourSheCriedMoMoMo, MoEtc...)

I share thoughts about players and like to talk FF with my leaguemates. I might avoid mentioning deep, deep sleepers, but part of the fun for me is talking about these things with my competitors. I honestly think someone in my league could see my draft board and it wouldn't help them all that much. Once you get a few rounds into the draft, player rankings change anyway depending on if you're starting to lean toward safer or higher risk guys as you twist through the mid to late rounds.

I think FF drafting is much more complex than just picking guys off of a preassigned cheatsheet.

:goodposting: the first couple of rounds are so predictable in most leagues. it doesn't really matter.

buy him a copy of espn fantasy football special magazine. :D
 Saying that in a FBG forum?Think Footballguys Magazine
No that was a subtle joke that espn the magazine sucks and it would help you out. :bag:
Ahhh IC now!Going by the topic a guy was asking for help.. not all like to give away their best knowledge of drafting ways..so I figure let him buy a Footballguys magazine...seems this got confusing beyound a few here. :)

frankly i would help him out. I do fantasy football much more for the enjoyment than anything else. This would give me more to talk about and it would be more fun. Plus if he wins it all, you can always rib him about it.

I've been in the same league for 14 years now and have always had one rule - do unto others as they would have you do unto them. If I hear that a guy pulled up with a hammy injury right before kickoff, I call the guy I am playing and tell him. If someone asks me a guys health status on draft night - I tell him as much info as I have. I know that many feel that it is up to each owner to be on top of things, and to a certain point I agree - BUT, not everyone has the same amount of time to devote to this hobby, what with families, work and lives outside the Fantasy Football Gridiron.

Karma aside, I just feel that if I hoist the league trophy at the end of the year, I want to do it knowing that I beat each team when they were giving me their best shot. Am I going to tell theguy that I will be taking Corey Bradford at the end of the draft because he will likely start opposite R. Williams in a Mike Martz offense? Probably not. But will I help him talk out his first 4 picks or so? You bet. Actually had a similar situation with a 45 minute drive to and from the draft last year and had a great conversation about off season developments on the way there and a great post draft wrap on the way back. You are the Ministry of Pain! Don't matter what you tell this guy - just go out and beat him on Sundays.

I am curious, how many times have you hoisted a FF league trophy you won?

I think this is the right approach, at least so much as leading up to draft day. I might not make the effort to let my opponent know about up to date injuries just prior to kickoff on Sundays, but I agree with the rest of your premises.

That's right! I'm the Ministry of Pain! thank you

I try to stay away from patting myself on the back - but I have the highest winning percentage over the 14 years and have won the league 5 times with a couple seconds and thirds. Is it the most competative league in the world? Probably not. But to me, sports (especially fantasy) are still mainly about SPORTSMANSHIP, not winning at all costs.

There is help, and then there is help. I drafted 5 teams in a league because some people couldn't make it. We all did very well. I don't think I want to go there again though...

Fantasy football is about fun and friends. Even the guys in the league that don't see that, just want the money are still amusing.

I would do the following:

Help the guy with specific topics. Point him to several lists, even this site if you're brave.

For the drive: Tell him the latest injuries before the draft. Discuss his interest in fantasy and the sport. Be genuine. Let him pick the topics. Be ok with saying no too. Just say you have an opinion, but there is not a consesus out there you've seen and you would like to keep it to yourself and see which way it will work out.

Find stuff out to rib him on that will be fun for both of you during the season. Plus you said some off the discussion might help you too.

Hope this helps.

FF is cutthroat in a few leagues I play, laid back in others. In one league, people try to trade their injured players before the news gets out. They even make up fake injuries during the draft, hoping a player slips to them. Cutthroat leagues are for sharks. But if your league is a local one with friends, with little money involved, I see no harm in sharing some of your ideas.

Be careful. I wouldn't offer this site to a league mate. I did and now a majority of my league uses this site. I guess that makes it more challenging though. Point them to fantasysharks.com. I think that is still free.

Sounds like my cousin. He's in my league and always wants to "collaborate" on preparation for the season. Of course, this means he really wants to know what I've figured out concerning trends and sleepers, etc.I don't mind helping him out. I just don't get too close to my individual draft plan. I'm happy to point out and discuss the top 25 or so expected selections. I'm also glad to speak about commonly accepted FF strategies and what might be new or different this year. I just don't reveal my hand too deeply. I guess the balance I try to strike is between being a good guy and helping out someone vs. undermining my personal team by giving away my draft strategy and specific individuals I am targeting at various points of the draft.

This is pretty simple to fix. Pretend you're the White House Press Secretary (any administration will do) and be as vague as possible. Don't be specific but make sure you have a lot of nothing to say about each player. Make every player look like they're a "good option" but "carry risk," and let him talk himself into (or out of) anyone.

I don't know about that... Last year at my draft I was picking in spot number two. I was really hoping the guy picking first would take Manning so I could get LT. He didn't though. He was going to take LT. The good news is I hit him with a chair and knocked him unconscious before he could finish saying "Tomlinson." This is what fantasy sports mean to me.Anyway, I wouldnt tell this guy everything and lay out who to take for him. Steer him towards a few good players and leave it to him to decide between the 2 or 3 players.

Cool I am glad it works out for you. I am surprised though.

I'm imagining right now a car ride from the movie Sideways, with MoP as the beleagured Paul Giamatti character and his buddy as the Thomas Haden Church character just happily raping his FF knowledge.
