Had A Thought Last Night....... (1 Viewer)

As I'm watching the game last night, it was glaring to me how good of an offensive coach Ben Johnson is. So I started thinking about where his next stop would be should he decide he's ready to be a head coach. And the more I thought about it, this scenario came to mind:

Andy Reid retires and Ben Johnson is the next head coach for the Chiefs.

This would be a perfect marriage of head coach and quarterback, especially if you start to think about who else is out there that would be a good fit for Mahomes. And if somehow the Chiefs win the 3-peat this year? Would be the perfect time and surely Ben Johnson would want this job over all others.

Now, Reid theoretically has more gas in the tank. But his wife has alluded to him retiring over the last few years. She usually says this kinda off-hand, but I think if were up to her he would be retired already.

What say you, fellow football nerds.?

I don't see Andy leaving anytime soon
He's 66
He's got plenty of tread left on his tires
Johnson will get offers from The Jags,Giants,Raiders,Bengals,Bears,Saints,Jets to name a few
He'll be in high demand, but I don't see The Chiefs in that mix

Both of Detroit’s coordinators deserve their own gig. Aaron Glenn is doing a great job holding that defense together.

IDC where they go, it’s been awesome having both of them around for the last four years. Chiefs would be an insanely good job for Ben Johnson, but not sure all the stars will align for that to happen.

Yeah, but of these teams, where do you think he would actually want to go? He already turned down the chance to work with Jayden Daniels.

Jags - No way
Giants - No way
Raiders - No way
Bengals - Yes
Bears - Maybe
Saints - Cap hell no way
Jets - Double no way

Bears and Bengals are two most likely scenarios, Bengals notoriously a bad franchise to work for so I'd put Bears and chance to work with Caleb as most likely scenario.

I don't know why the Giants would be a no way...they are a historic NFL franchise and if Johnson likes Sanders or Ward he could have his QB...not saying he ends up there but I don't think it should be a no way.

Nah, Reid won’t retire yet.

Don't see it happening, mostly because of the timing, but you're directionally correct in that Johnson has already demonstrated he's only going to take a HC job if he really thinks it's the right situation. (And yeah, maybe he should have taken the opportunity to coach Daniels, but it's not like he hurt his stock by coming back to Detroit this year).

As a lifelong fan of both Detroit and Washington, I was hoping he ended up there last year. Now that that's off the table, I just hope he ends up in the AFC so the Lions don't have to face him. Bears would be worst-case scenario for me.

As for where he should go, I agree with you that most of the openings that we know about/expect so far are dumpster-fire franchises, although there will always be another one or two that come open unexpectedly

Minor quibble: Commanders hired their HC (Quinn) in February. The NFL draft was in April. So he didn't turn down the job to coach Daniels, he turned it down to stay away from Washington. Washington had been declining in attractiveness both to potential hires and and to real fans for 20 years.

I'm not saying she should have taken the Washington HC job, and agree that he's done well going back to Detroit.

Can't remember the exact sequence of events, but wasn't it widely expected once they were locked into the No. 2 pick that they would take Daniels? I recall being unsure of which QB I wanted them to take, but that the scuttlebutt all along was that it would be Daniels.

Anyway, he certainly knew he would be working with a highly drafted rookie QB if he took the job

I honestly don't know if that would be a good idea to take over as coach for a franchise and fan base that come accustomed to winning super bowls. Pretty big shoes to fill. Bill Walsh will always be more highly regarded than George Siefert who was pretty successful with 9ers.

It was widely reported later than February that they were locked in on Daniels, but in early Feb. nobody knew for sure since the entire front office was new, not talking much, and nobody knew who to trust. But yeah, he knew he'd probably get a shot at a highly drafted QB. He probably felt unsure about Washington as a whole, and stuck with a sure job he already had with a more talented team. Seems to have worked out well for him.

Why not the Cowboys ?

No doubt Ben Johnson is a very good OC and might well be a very good HC, although there have been many really good OC's that failed as Head Coach, but we know that Andy Reid is a future HOF HC and one of the best offensive minds in the game. As a Chargers fan, I'd be very happy if Reid retired even if they hired Johnson to replace him.
Yes, this. Any QB drafted in the first round of the NFL draft is more likely to be a bust than to see the HOF. Any coordinator promoted to HC for the first time is more likely to fail than succeed. Every fan of every AFC franchise (except the one in Missouri) would be happy to see Andy Reid go. We'd be even happier if Mahomes got traded outside the conference -- sure, he'd fetch a dump truck full of draft picks, but we'll take our chances with that.

The Chiefs are an excellent franchise right now, and I'll support any little bit of variance that we can inflict upon them.

The game Brady called for the Lions earlier this year, he was absolutely smitten with Ben Johnson on the broadcast. Him being minority owner of LV now puts this more into play than most realize.

Ben says he “is seeking “organizational alignment” between the head coach and general manager. Considering HC-needy teams will mostly be seated towards the bottom of the standings, the coach is also seeking “recognition” from organizations about their shortcomings. This would require interested teams to explain where things have gone wrong and how they intend to fix the issues.”

I don’t see the raiders as a good match here.

I wouldn’t say no way with Jax but agree that they’re less likely. Cincy would be fun but I really think Chicago is the right fit.

why don't teams do transitions more? Like what TB did.

Would Johnson consider Asst. HC/OC job for a year to work with Reed and then Reed retires? (assuming Reed is nearly done).

why would he go to cinci and their crappy ownership? If they didnt have burrow they would be a bottom 5 team.

Detroit has the best Oline, two talented running backs, and 2nd most accurate QB in the league. Perhaps Johnson is over-rated. He might look like Josh McDaniels after he left the Patriots.

I’m just saying Ben working with that offense would be fun. Not that I’d want him there or think he should.

It’s certainly possible. As it is for any coordinator becoming a head coach.

Ben Johnson strikes me as someone who wants to accomplish things on his own accord and not the back of the referees giving KC all the calls.

I thought Reid just signed a 5yr extension, no?

He's on the verge of passing Belichick and catching Shula in a few years. He's not going anywhere.

Ben Johnson will flop as a Head Coach
Won't make it 3 years on his 1st time out
He should try being the Asst Head Coach for a few years like DC did and see how that works out
