does anyone that follows NYG close know whether or not Nicks can make a substantial impact this year? i just traded knox and high 1st rd pick for nicks and crab in my 12 team .5ppr dynasty, hoping he can help me down the stretch. take some of steve smiths targets maybe?

Why would he take some of Smith's targets?

It's not because of his upside, is it? Please don't say 'upside'.

He may end up taking some of Manningham's targets. Manningham has been good but played poorly this week.

because i think smith is getting so many targets simply because manningham cant get open. im a michigan fan, and i was never enamored with his ability to get open on anything other than fly, deep post routes. if nicks can come in and get open, i think smith comes back down to earth a little, and nicks plays well. just need some feedback from NYG homers, not sure if anyones hearing anything about nicks' status

Well Smith is tops in the league in targets (next to Moss) but that could be because he was flying under the radar. Now people have to see him as the guy to shut down. Nobody really knew for sure he was the man until the third week. Manningham's stock seems to have fallen, so Nicks has the potential to be the solid #2 guy and could put up better number than Smith when they double him or he goes up against a top corner.

not a good post . . . Manningham can and goes get separation - his issue is his hands . . .

There is no doubt in my mind that Manningham is the #3 before long, but were probably talking 'bout opening day 2010.

Manningham is 2nd on the team in targets with 32
Yep. But the question is how much of Manningham's targets are a result of Nicks (and Hixon) being injured? And now that Nicks is back, will he challenge Manningham for the #2 role behind 'the real' Steve Smith?

Before the season started I felt like Nicks was the deep threat WR in NY. He got injured and Manningham has stepped up. Now that Nicks is back, who knows what will happen. I have been holding onto Nicks so he gets my vote for the number 2 WR.

Manningham started play #1 week # 1 when everyone was healthy. Few people actually know that fact. Manningham had a terrible game vs. KC, bad hands and good coverage by Brandon Carr of KC. But, the coaches didnt have Hackim Nicks ahead of him coming out of camp -- Coughlin said it was a rotation and he lived up to his word so far. Reality here is that all the WRs will get action, and hot hands will get TONS of action. Manninhgam seized the opportunity first, Hicks is good enough to get some too.

many great points in the article, but this one applies to Nicks:

• Manningham sure had a rough day, seemingly out of nowhere. Three drops and very nearly a fourth on what turned into a 43-yard reception. He’s been so good, though, he gets a pass for one week. But he’ll have to fix that problem because clearly the Giants want rookie WR Hakeem Nicks to have a significant role. And he showed his explosiveness by turning a screen pass into a 54-yard touchdown. By the way, the move he put on CB Maurice Leggett at the end was outstanding - - not just because he stopped and let the defender fly by, but also because Nicks slipped and somehow maintained his balance and momentum. He loses points (and probably a little money from his paycheck) for his silly phone celebration afterwards, though.

He did play poorly but Coughlin is still in his corner
The Star Ledger reports Giants HC Tom Coughlin was hopeful WR Mario Manningham can bounce back after his struggles in Sunday's game, during which had a handful of drops in the eight times he was targeted and only came down with one juggling catch. “He is capable of so much more. And we have seen it,” Coughlin said. “But he is an honest young guy. He knows. But he also knows our team depends on him to get going. And I'm sure he will have a good week this week.”

Sure. Though I would say if Nicks keeps up his play there will be a very small margin of error for Manningham moving forward.

All 3 WRs are talented, so for the Giants this is a good problem to have. S Smith plays the Toomer role, the question boils down to which of Manningham or Nicks gets more PT. At some point the coaches will be forced to play Nicks more....he seems to produce every time he's given an opportunity. But I don't see him starting before 2010.

I caught the NYG game this week. 4-49-1 doesn't seem great but Nicks did most of that against Nnamdi. He reminds me of Dwayne Bowe but hopefully better hands. Not blazing speed or Boldin-power but has game speed and desire to create big plays. Plax had big play ability but too often would go down before contact. Hate to see big WR do that.

If the Giants need to throw to keep up today, Nicks could be in for a nice game. BUT, I have to figure the Giants are going to really try to run the ball today.

Taking my chances, Nicks is locked and loaded in my lineup.

I think both manningham and nicks will be used and eli will target who ever has the hot hand more. I don't think this will be a very high scoring game though. Maybe 20-17. So either one will be a risky play this week. I am going with nicks because of calvins injury. And steve smith is real and spectacular.

I get the feeling this is what has been going on.Nicks and Hixon were out. Manningham soaked up the targets. {Edit: alliteration issue there}.SSmith2 will get what he will get, which is a lot, and Nicks will get shots at TD's and long plays. What Nicks has done the last 2 games is looking like how he was progressing and what he was doing before he got hurt, no? {Edit: yep, my bad, agreed}

Same, forced into starting Nicks with byes and Calvin dinged up.

And guess who is leading the Giants in receiving yards this game? Yep, Hakeen Nicks. At some point folks here will realize that he's the best WR on the team.

Anyone who has eyes can see this kid can play. He's putting up these numbers in part time duty as well. That crossing pattern where he caught the ball and ran 50 more yards was a thing of beauty. Only a matter of time before he's on the field every down.

Because of a garbage time bomb thrown by Carr. :goodposting:
It counts doesnt it?
He won't go against back ups every week.
You are wrong anyway. He was leading in yards receiving -- 70 yards vs Manningham's 50 yards -- before Carr came in the game. Thanks for playing though!I love how every week it's the same excuse. "Nicks went against backups" "Nicks points came in garbage time" blah blah blah.Bottom line: he produces every time he's on the field.

Yep. Who did he look like on that play? Anquan Boldin. Can't remember who it was, EBF or someone else, who compared him to Housh. Sorry, but Housh can't make that play. He just can't. Boldin remains the best compare for him.

Yup, it was EBF. I was agreeing with a link someone posted comparing him to Boldin, which I think is a great comp. And EBF said Housh, which makes zero sense to me.

why do people have to bash either WR (Manningham or Nicks) They both belong on the field as starters. They both look fantastic. I do agree that Nicks LOOKS like Boldin. He just has that huge body, but still looks fast.

Yep very Boldin like or Dwayne Bowe with better hands.

Saying he's the best receiver on the team makes you look like a clown. Eventually maybe, now not close to the level Steve Smith is playing at. Sorry.

:lmao: When proven wrong repeatedly, just keep changing the debate. Priceless!

I started Nicks today as I posted in this thread but I have to admit I was nervous at the half. I certainly liked that score because you had to think the Giants would be throwing more in the 2nd half and NO wouldn't be playing at the same level they were in the 1st half due to the lopsided score.

If not for the blowout, Nicks probably doesn't have this big day.

I can see that for me, the second half of the year will involve a lot of Nicks or SSmith (CAR)? dilemmas. As Bryant says, things move fast around here.
