Hamels' Arm (1 Viewer)

Hasn't he thrown 100+ pitches in every game so far this year?

Why don't they try to protect the guy - he's young, bullpen isn't terrible w/ Myers closing.

I don't get it.

114 isn't too much. Probably half of those were 81 mph change ups.

Let him come out for the 9th Charlie.

2 words-----Charlie Manuel.
i don't know him all that well - is there some sort of history w/ overworking pitchers here? i always fear wood/prior again.then again felix was babied and it didn't help much.
If not, there's one developing. No reason why Myers was in there tonight after working both Monday and Tuesday

Was at the game tonight and really thought something special was going to happen. This kid is unbelievable. No doubt he will throw one someday. Hitters just seem so overmatched against him, a 3-2 changeup? Must've thrown at least 3 of them tonight that I can remember. Poor guys don't have a chance against him. I think the long half inning in the bottom of the 6th hurt him, lost his rhythm. Also I can't understand why the pitching coach comes out during a no hitter after he walks his first batter of the night. STAY IN THE DUGOUT #######.

I don't have a problem with letting him throw, I'm tired of hearing people scream as soon as a pitcher hits 100 pitches. Let these guys pitch for crying out loud.

And the bullpen, other than Myers, is absolutely BRUTAL. Why ya think they've been letting the 106 year old Jamuie Moyer throw 110+ pitches?? I agree that Myers has no business pitching tonight, now he is unavailable for a day game tomorrow.

114 pitches from Hamels isn't as bad as 114 pitches from a Kerry Wood or someone who is max effort every time out. That said, he's pushing it. The good news is Hamels wasn't overworked in his development days because he was too busy being a ####### getting into barfights.

Did you see Hamel's reaction to the Weeks walk? He looked like a little leaguer flailing his arms with condemnation for himself. He needed to be calmed down. He lost his composure.

I've been debating this in my head since last night. On the one side, if you have a 4-run lead and Myers has worked 2 nights in a row, you'd like to think that you could save him and put someone else in there. I think that in theory this makes the most sense. On the other side, I don't really trust anyone in the bullpen even with a 4-run lead and you don't want to get into a 6-5 game where Myers has to come in with men on base. Plus, I think think it was important not to let this game get away after a great pitching performance by Hamels. You are there in the 9th inning last night and trying to decide when to use Myers to get the best chance to win, right then or on Thursday, when you still have 9 innings to go through and you are facing Sheets. I personally think it was the right move, practically speaking.

Hamels has thrown: 110, 97, 110, 115, 92, 107, 118, 110How many pitches do you think he should throw?Edit: He has thrown the third-most pitches in the majors.

I wouldn't be surprised if Myers "begged" Manual after he blew the save the other night. He was pretty disappointed and wanted to get back out there right away. He'll sit today in the afternoon game and be ready for the weekend.re: Hamels and the pitch count. I echo what Knightro said - Hamels didn't throw a ton of innings in the minors either plus he's young and should be able to throw 100+ every outing.

Manuel addressed this in his press conference after the game (Myers). He challenged the reporters to go back and check his record with regard to Billy Wagner. He said he considers 4 runs in that park to be a "save" situation. He even said a 5 run lead is more like a 3 run lead there. Don't be surprised to see him use Myers with 4-5 runs there all season.

I'm really happy to read this. Managers that conform to using a closer in just save situations are stupid. Nice to see him thinking outside the standard baseball norms.

I was at the games last night. The park was juiced, and the excitement grew the further Hamels took his perfect game. Great command of his pitches. This guy is good and just getting better. Even helped himself w/ 2 hits.

The bullpen is bad and the very weak link of the Phils, had no problem w/ Hamels' number of pitches. I could not believe Manuel pitched Myers again. At least start w/ someone else and bring Myers in if the firs 1 or 2 guys get on. They can't overuse Myers or else the have NOTHING in the pen

And he followed the trip tp the mound by giving up a 2 run homer. So much for calming him down. Ah, we were just angry he lost the no-no, and thought the visit had something to do with it, let the kid work it out on his own. What could he possibly have told Hamles?

Apparently, Myers is available for today's game, and another 96 games in a row...

Phillies Notes

Brett Myers threw a perfect ninth inning last night in a 6-2 victory over the Milwaukee Brewers at Citizens Bank Park.

It was his 15th relief appearance in 28 games since he left the rotation for the bullpen. It also was his third appearance in three days. Does he think he's OK to pitch this afternoon in the series finale?

"Yep," Myers said. "Ready to roll. I'm good for 100. And then I'll need four days off."

Gotta love the mentality, maybe he was destined to be a closer all along?

I think he's loving this role. He seemed to have lost a little of his confidence after that game against the Braves but he just seems so comfortable as the closer. Being a Pittsburgher living in Philly, I hate seeing any Philly team do good but this team looks like they've turned it around and are ready to be serious contenders (like they were predicted to be at the start of the season).

Depending on mechanics, changeups arent easier on the arm than a curve, or certainly a fastball.

I personally think the development of pitchers has been a true failing of modern baseball. Somehow we've gone from players that could pitch a complete game every 4 days to guys that can only pitch 6 or 7 every 5 days.

see that's my point - a lot of pitches. he's been pretty much lights out so far, so I'd have to think that manuel doesn't want to take out someone on a run just because he's thrown a lot of pitches.hamels is a victim of his own success maybe? and i'm probably overreacting, but at this rate he's gonna hit the DL this year.
