Handcuffs (1 Viewer)

With limited roster space, is it better to handcuff your own top 15 RB (Benson, Rice, Gore), get someone else's stud handcuff (C. Taylor), or blow it all off. What's your take?

Depends on your lg but adding a player you may need over a block is always a good way to go.

Say you are in FFOC and rosters lock after week 9. You have Gore and Coffee/C. Taylor are out there. Later in the year you are in the hunt for the million dollars and you lose Gore, you will be upset that you blocked the AP owner. I know AP could go down but by having your top RB's cuff you ensure your shot for big money IMO. I held Chester all year just for this reason.

Now in a smaller lg that you can pick up players for weeks to come, have less bench spots, you want to add the best players. If someone drops a good player for a bye, grab that guy!

Just my 2 cents, gl all in week 9!

16 team league here with 18 players per team. Looking at dropping Larry Johnson for Garrett Wolfe. Just can't do it yet in case Johnson goes somewhere else.

I'm presuming it's a keeper league?Johnson is going nowhere this year. I see him on the sidelines all season as property of the Kansas City Chiefs.

I am in a league where we have pretty flexible roster spaces and I am holding both McGahee (for Rice) and Choice (for Barber). I also have ADP, Jamal Lewis and Moats and at most can start four of these guys. It hasn't hurt me yet, but I am only carrying 4 WRs in a start 3-5 receiver .5 PPR league. I lucked out on receivers and have AJ, Bowe, Marshall and Smith (NYG), but I am going to have to move a RB to cover for week 10 byes for my WRs.

I feel comfortable knowing that if Rice goes down I am covered, but it also may hurt me.

Handcuffs are rarely worth it, IMO. In order for a handcuff to be valuable, he needs the guy in front of him to go down *AND* he needs to be capable of putting up top 20ish numbers once he's starting. Putting up top 20 numbers is hard- a third of STARTING NFL RBs can't do it, so a backup has to be considered an even longer shot.

With that said, there are some backups who I really believe could and likely would be studs if given the full load, and those guys should be rostered. Specifically, I'm speaking of guys like Jon Stewart and Chester Taylor- guys who have either been quality fantasy assets in the past, guys who are backups in phenomenal situations, or guys who are all-world talents.

not so sure chester taylor would be top 20 anymore if ADP went down.

i've never believed in handcuffs, but its because my main league is 15-man rosters, start 13. with bye weeks and injuries, i'd rather have guys i can count on on a regular basis.

plus, i don't expect my guys to get hurt.

I think there's value in peace of mind. Having M. Turner when he backed up Tomlinson and Chester behind AP might not net you points, but it sure makes things less stressful when there's a tweak or question if the starter can play. Obviously you shouldn't hurt your team in the process, but with big names like that and a strong backup behind them I feel better having the guy just in case.

Edit: I have Chester in every league I'm in this year, and I don't have AP in any of them. But the rosters aren't so tight that I can't maneuver. I just consider him a lottery pick and maybe the AP owner has a little more to think about every week.
