This may be a runaway, but was curious.  I've never been a big Star Wars nerd....errr...fan.  I have, however, always enjoyed the Indiana Jones movies.

For me, Indy had the lead until I saw Kingdom Of The Crystal Skull, at which point Solo took the lead.

Then I saw The Force Awakens and Indy took the lead again.

I chose Han. If nothing else based on the staying power of the 2 franchises. I feel like the Indiana Jones name has gotten lost over the generations. Star Wars is still cruising, still gaining new fans of these newest generations and kids.

Indy for me.  Even with the multiple movies, I still feel like Han Solo is closer to a one-off character than lead like Jones.  I don’t know how the book releases matched up with his portrayal, but as Jack Ryan for a couple more movies could have made their mark as well

This.  He is better known as Solo among all generations, but Indiana Jones was a better character.

I agree completely with this.

almost completely- voted for Solo. felt like Indy turned into every character he played- vulnerable anti-hero. Solo was more a smarmy smart-###.

you've done a man's job, sir.

Yep, thread resolved in a single post here.  If the question is iconic, no way Indy is more iconic than Solo.

not close. Solo's a cartoon
"Iconic" has nothing to do with quality of a role, screenwriting, or anything like that. "Iconic" is first, second, and third about "recognizability" and the first mental shortcut average people make when an actor is mentioned.

Han Solo in a walk. Not as bad a walk as it would be for Carrie Fisher (Princess Leia or the friend in Harry Met Sally?) or Mark Hamill (Luke Skywalker or the dude in Corvette Summer?), but still a walk.

You can still get your kids a Han Solo notebook during school-supplies shopping. Try finding an Indiana Jones notebook. That's "iconic".

Carrie Fisher as Jake's girlfriend in the Blues Brothers burned into my memory pretty well, too.

Han Solo -- Malcolm Reynolds, Spike Spiegel, Peter Quill, Starbuck

Indy has the Romancing the Stone guy (what's his name, don't look) and Laura Croft.

It isn't close.  Han is the greater icon.

It's pretty close to me since it's two characters I've heard of versus two characters I've heard of in you list of inspirations.

I'm going to guess that you've never heard of Spike Speigel (because I haven't either). Who is the other one you aren't familiar with?

I have a feeling I'll sleep fine tonight having never seen Firefly or Cowboy Bebop (actually never even heard of that one).
Neither of them have the cultural penetration their most ardent fans think they do. Firefly was excellent television, though ... would've thrived if the Netflix delivery model for series was around back then.

My kids love anime, so I've gotten some Cowboy Bebop exposure. It's iconic in its niche ... but its still in a niche. That says nothing about the quality of the series -- just something about the level of exposure and cultural penetration.

Indy is the more direct ripoff, from Alan Quartermain.  Speilberg and Ford gave him the Han Solo Treatment(R) and wala, an icon is born.  But not the bigger one.

Han shot^^^^ was filmed first.

Damn you sir!     Damn you for being correct!

Seriously though, Firefly was an amazing show.  Not for sci-fi but for great storytelling, characters and comedy. You should try it @Dr. Octopus.  It's only one season so not all that long to get through.

Joker, animated.

Ford's portrayal of Jack Ryan in Patriot Games and Clear and Present Danger will always be what I envision Clancy's main character.

Not Solo or Jones, but if Ford had been Ryan in the Hunt for Red October instead of Baldwin, it'd be three awesome trilogies.

Yeah, I don't know. I think of Indiana Jones as the more iconic Harrison Ford character for some reason, even by the definitions given in this thread. Part of the Banana Republic and fashion of that ilk and its subsequent craze was Jones-inspired.

That movie was utterly huge.

When I think of James Earl Jones, I think of Darth Vader, and you could make character acting arguments for him for a host of other characters.

In other words, I get what iconic means, but still Indy>>>>Solo

IMO, Indy is a franchise. Han Solo is a character in a franchise. Ford was part of an ensemble in Star Wars. Are there many Indy characters that have been in more than one movie? Take Han out of Star Wars and there is still a series. Take Indiana Jones away and there’s nothing.

Indy closed the deal with multiple ladies over the course of the trilogy.

It took Han the entire trilogy to land a kiss.

Indy in a landslide.

I see the movie, Serenity is on Netflix but not the Firefly series. I would watch it, just never have had the chance (didn't really register with me during it's initial run).

Watch the series before the movie if possible. The movie was wrapping up all the story and character threads.  Decent stand alone, but much better if you are familiar with them.

I'm sure it'll be back on one of the streaming services again soon, it's one they tend to rotate in and out.  Also one of the Discovery/History/Science type channels tends to show the whole series once or twice a year.
