Has Gates reached bust status? (1 Viewer)

He'll probably muster 2-23 again against the Raiders. Is it Rivers? Their OC? Norv Turner? Gates himself?

He is worse than worthless because you almost have to plug him in, knowing it's going to bite you...

Hey he just got a target! I suspect I'm starting a Shianco type next week over Gates if I survive week 14.

I rolled with Scheffler this week for the first time all season, and barring a miraculous turnaround for Gates, will continue to roll with Scheffler through the playoffs.

You can't even justify starting Gates based on upside anymore, because even his good games are to the tune of 4 65 1 - numbers no better than what many other TEs can do for you on any given week.

Sadly, it seems the days of Gates blowing up for 10 140 2 a few times per season seem to be over.

He is TE4 in my league.

Not SUPER STUD status and possibly not playing up to his ADP, but TE4 means only 3 TE have scored more.

SD with 27 pts at the half and that #$#%@! w/o a SINGLE catch.

So he IS playing tonight right?? <_< Damn if he's that hurt put the backup in. This is ridiculous.

<_< He's the #2 TE in my non-PPR TE mandatory leagues. He's just not separating himself from the field like he used to or perhaps more accurately the field has caught up back up to him.

He has 3 straight games of under 30 yds, and is on his way to a 4th. I can get that kind of production from Marcedes Lewis... actually, Lewis is better lately.Gates was great earlier but has pulled a Houdini act the last month or so.

Considering what most people expected from/gave up for Gates, "he's the #4 TE in the league" isn't exactly a ringing endorsement.

I benched him for Shockey this week. Based on the first half at least, I made the right call. He MUST be injured, no other explanation to go from so dominant to turd.

Last 3 weeks he won't be in your top 30 for TE. Assuming this turd continues he'll fall even farther. Considering he has been in the top 20 at WR/TE this is a HUGE drop-off.

ditto here, one point ahead of Witten for the year; 15 up on Cooley. Gonzo is at #1 with a 30 point spread.

His toe injury from the end of last season was still a problem at the start of this one. That should have been a big red flag. Hopefully he can get it sorted out this offseason.

Gates is one of only 3 TEs in the top-30 that haven't put up zero points in a game they played this year (non-ppr). Gonzo and Winslow are the others though Winslow missed 2 games. After Gonzo it's pretty much all bleh at TE.

Gates' lack of production can be directed at Norv Turner. Turner's gameplan is clearly to pass to mediocre WRs vs. utilizing his only two pro bowlers (Gates and L.T.). It's really disappointing being a Gates owner this season.

he's killed me 4 weeks now, cost me 2 weeks....now officially on the bench and I will never draft or trade for him again....FFFFFFFFFFFFUUUUUUUUUUUUU

Hopefully Norv will be gone next year.Guess I should've started Carlson.

I feel like I'm playing without a TE this week...kind of like being a man-down in hockey. He's been struggling lately but zero receptions when his team has put up 30+ points and three TDs in the air is ugly. For those in a playoff tilt this isn't how you wanted to start the week.

Plus it's a Thursday night game, so we get to sit on it for three days. I hate Thursday games.

Nope - AJ Smith likes having a coach he can control and he's already stated that Norv will be their HC next season. It all makes sense now why Eli didn't want to be a Charger - incredible forsight by the Manning family. It's funny, the Chargers fire a coach who has been a winner with every organization he's coached (albeit, not in the playoffs) after leading his team to a 14-2 record - yet they choose to keep a coach who has regressed each season. Nice job Charger brass :wall:

Feel your pain, played Gates in 2 leagues, was holding out hope for a few catches in the 2nd half. Zero puts a damper on the nite bigtime. Looks like he is an after thought in their O, now, very few targets the last 4 games, after blowing up in London. Just wow.

You know you're addicted to fantasy when the Thursday night games effect your whole mood. A few week's ago I had Cutler and Marshall when they blew up against the Browns and I felt like I hit the lottery for the next few days. The Gates performance is going to loom like a black cloud...just a smelly effort at the wrong time of the year.

AFC Championship Game appearance after Marty failed to get them there. I fail to see how that was a regression.

The only time a TE gets wideout like numbers in an offense is when the actual wideouts are no good. Rivers/Jackson/Floyd have matured, and therefore Gates is no longer a top option (although, strangely enough, his numbers may be buoyed by the fact that LT doesn't seem so automatic in the redzone anymore).

Witten will be the same once Roy Williams gets acclimated to Romo and the Dallas offense. Gonzalez would be the same, but of course when have the Chiefs ever had more than one decent wideout?

TEs are useful in playaction and whatnot, but when it comes to passing the ball downfield OCs and QBs will always favour smaller, faster guys to get the ball to. It's only through flaws in the offense - be it a lack of talent, protection issues, or a young QB - that they settle for making the TE the focal point of the passing game.

I traded for him about five weeks ago - gave up Eddie Royal. I knew I was overpaying at the moment, but I did not expect this. Royal never played for me, but it is turning out to be a bust for me.

I was able to pick up Scheffler, so hopefully I get can get some production during the playoffs (had a bye this week). Just like others said, I am afraid the week I sit him, he goes off for two td's, etc.

Interesting take on this...

Well yes, if you spent a 3rd or 4th on Gates in a redraft he has disappointed b/c he didn't seperate himself from the other TEs like he used & he has disappointed so far during crunch time.I think a lot of people had downgraded Gates on their boards due to the combination uncertain injury status coming into the season & the emergence of so many quality & sleeper TEs (at least it looked that way coming into the season--the TE spot has been pretty weak as a whole outside of Gonzo).

Rivers completed a grand total of 10 passes last night. There's only so many balls that can be spread around between guys on a team when you barely make it to double digit completions. Doesn't help that the game was completely out of hand with 9 minutes left in the 2nd quarter.

Welcome to the year of the crappy TE. Witten was on a tear until Romo got hurt. Owen Daniels was on a tear until Schuab got hurt. Gates has a hot hand the 1st half and then got ice cold. Winslow has missed games and the Browns offense as a whole blows. Shockey got injured, yet again. Dallas Clark and the Colts offense has disappeared.

Unless you've got Gonzo, you're likely getting nothing worthwhile from your TE's on a consistent basis.

:lmao: 13-6, 2 playoff wins, and AFC Championship Game appearance > 14-3 and division playoff loss at home

I hear you all on the goose egg. Been down for two days now. It IS like playing with 9 guys, and in the playoffs, that really sucks.

I home I survive long enough to bench him next week. Heck even a Detroit TE has to be better than Gates lately!

I thought the NFL across the board was going to be using more TE's. At least that's what the trend was showing. I'm blaming it on the higher amount of Thunder/Lightning RB combos, and TE's needed to stay in and block more for them. Also teams reacting to the combo RB are in the box more, taking away the route under the linebakers. TE's catch seam passes and outs. Most passes are going a few yards deeper now, behind the backers.

For 2008, yes, he's a "bust".

In dynasty leagues, for any of you still allowed to trade, BUY LOW!!!

In dynasty leagues, for any of you with trade deadlines already past, BUY LOW WHEN THEY OPEN UP!!!

Not true. Cooley has been amazingly consistent in a PPR league. You can almost guarantee 10 pts from Cooley every week which is all I want from my TE. I will take that consistency over the 18 pt Gates week to 0 pts the next week. That stuff kills you in FF because then you bench and start him at the wrong time and start chasing pts, over thinking etc

I offered Roy Williams (WR) in a deal and was asked to sweeten the deal. I declined as I think Roy's future could look brighter. Gates has become 2nd fiddle and some people never get over those foot injuries (how it started with SA and Eddie George).some good points in this thread. I stayed away in redrafts, but was relying on him for my stretch run in a dynasty. To make matters worse, I had VJax on the bench. You can't really complain about the coaching staff when they win and don't use him. Also, I think the reason Norv will still have his job is because they are about 30 seconds away from being 8-5 despite major injuries- Gates/LT/Cromartie playing with them, McNeil out for the 1st part of season, and Merriman done for the year.

Cooley is having a solid year, especially if you play in a PPR league where it's much closer. But in a non-ppr league he's hardly been a difference maker. He's only averaging 1 ppg more than John Carlson or Dustin Keller who are the #8 & #9 TE's. Gonzo is averaging 3.5 ppg better than Cooley. That's nearly twice as many points as Cooley is putting up altogether on a weekly basis.Consistency has it's pros and cons, some will argue they would prefer a guy who blows up every couple of weeks and can single handedly win you games to one who just chugs along. For most it's just a matter of personal preference.

Let's see. Player X has an ADP of 3rd at his position before the draft, his FBG consensus ranking is 4th at his position pre-draft, and after 13 weeks he ranks 2nd at his position. It's clear: player X is the biggest bust EVER.
