Keyshawn Johnson and Irving Fryar are the two most recent ones; in the pre-merger era, Dave Parks (a very good end for the 49ers) was the #1 pick in 1964. Before 1960, a few other WRs (including Kyle Rote) went #1 overall. The Jets also used their #1 pick in the first round in the 1990 supplemental draft on Rob Moore; it ended up costing the Jets the #8 pick in the 1991 season (which was a good move; with the exception of Herman Moore, Rob Moore had a better career than any of the players in the pick #8 to #20 range).
5 time pro-bowler. #13 career receiving yards, #17 receptions. Granted he did a lot elsewhere, but as far as terrible picks go, Fryar is pretty low on that list.Among the group they could have taken, while I enjoyed listening to Bill Maas on the radio and Carl Banks was a good enough player, it's not like they passed on a bunch of studs and took a dud here.
Fryar and G Guy McIntyre had the most Pro Bowl selections of anyone in the 1984 draft (both had 5). The only other player taken in the first round with more than 2 Pro Bowl selections in that draft was Wilbur Marshall with 3. In context, Fryar doesn't look so bad by comparison.
