Having the NFL Network (1 Viewer)

On The Rocks

Footballguy
five or six years ago as more an more guys came out of their cave and realized they could have an advantage if they had a home computer and internet access leagues got more comptetive.

now the NFL Network comes along with 24 hour coverage of training camps and up to the minute news on all NFL happenings.

I don't have the NFL Network and am wondering if the guys in my league that have the channel have a Fantasy Football advantage over me? Or am I getting all the information I need by being a FBG subscriber?

I think the relevant FF information all gets filtered down to here eventually and NFL Network does a good job at bringing personalities and faces to the viewer.

I had since it 1st came out and didn't miss a show back then, now I catch it when I can or if something big is happening - The predraft coverage is cool.

And every so often you catch a replay of some classic game.

They're showing all of the pre-season contests this year so there's some info that just isn't available to those without the NFL network. :football:

that is really where i think i am missing out. picking up on some second string guys that could be great sleeper steals late in the draft.

Yup, with NFL network and Tivo, I'll be watching at least the first quarter of every single preseason game. That should give me a really solid idea of how each player will do this season.

I love it.

Total Access is must see TV.

I enjoy "Playbook" and "In their own words".

Now add in Pre season and Regular Season.....Gold Jerry... Gold.

Draft Coverage/Preseason Games/Total Access are all great and now regular season games too will only add to it. Preseason games put the icing on the cake for me.

NFL Net to Run 52 Preseason Games

John Consoli

JULY 17, 2006 -

The NFL Network will air 52 preseason games in 24 days, including six live games beginning August 10. For most of the games the network will use the TV feeds of the local broadcasters and make use of both sets of announcers, one crew for each half of the telecast.

The six live games will be Pittsburgh Steelers vs. Arizona Cardinals, 4 p.m. Saturday, Aug. 12; Arizona vs. New England Patriots, 8 p.m., Saturday, Aug. 19; Seattle Seahawks vs. San Diego Chargers, 11 p.m., Saturday, Aug. 26; Houston Texans vs. Denver Broncos, 8 p.m., Sunday, Aug. 27; Tennessee Titans vs. Green Bay Packers, 4 p.m., Friday, Sept. 1; and San Diego vs. San Francisco 49ers, 10 p.m., Friday, Sept. 1.

During the regular season the NFL Network will air its new package of 8 regular season NFL games on Thursday and Saturday nights, beginning on Thanksgiving night. It will also re-air 75 NFL games during the season.

Actually seeing the preseason games helps immensely.

After watching Kevin Jones and that terrible offensive line play in week 3 of preseason last year, I made sure not to draft him in any of the eight leagues in which I play. He was a top 10 running back for a "number" of prominent subscription ranking sites, and I just had a terrible feeling about him after watching that game, so I dropped him way down in my rankings.

I was also able to see Lamont Jordan catching dumpoff passes all preseason long, and took him in 5 or 6 leagues.

The only substitute would be reading stat lines online or in the paper, watching highlights on SportsCenter, and reading game logs here on FBG. That would probably almost equal seeing the preseason games live.

When did watching preseason football games suddenly become fun? Did I miss the memo where coaches are going to suddenly start showing all their tricks and stop playing vanilla offense and defense?

Maybe my secretary missed the fax cover sheet on this one? (FFA Forum joke)

I think this requires bannage. :banned:

I have to agree with this. At this point off the offseason, I'd gladly watch LAST years preseason games.

:goodposting: everyone gets so excited that football is back and then 5 minutes into the preseason game you remember that preseason football is nothing like the regular season.

it is better than beisbol, but overall its use as a tool to predict regular season success is overrated with the exception of new QBs and a couple other key players.

Ditto.I watched all the starters' plays last preseason thanks to Tivo and the NFL network and will do it again this year. I felt much more confident taking Jordan after forming my own opinion of him and his situation than I did just listening to the experts. I saw the same thing you did and in my ppr league ended up with LT2, Jordan and Westbrook in my league. Those three combined for so many catches it wasn't even fair. I will be watching the Vikes this preseason to see how I feel about Chester.

I'd have to agree that Rich Eisen sucks. He's always trying to find out about the players' bling and he's an extremely awkward conversationalist. Darren Horton is waaaaay better.

Funny that I feel the EXACT opposite.

Even as someone who will watch many of the pre-season games (have you tried to watch summer weekend television?) and who believes that you can never have too much information, I would advise that you need to be able to place in perspective what you see in pre-season.

Please don't be the guy who declares the Rb who breaks a 15 yard run as the next Priest Holmes. Don't be the guy who starts moving the rookie WR past the boring veteran when he makes one nice sideline catch. Don't be the guy who starts pimping the QB who is 12 for 15 when his team is behind in the 4th quarter of a pre-season game.

There are some thing to pay attention to: most notably injuries whether they occur in the game or players who are getting over an off season procedure of some type.

Actually, I've seen far more of Eisen than Horton so maybe the latter isn't much better. Eisen makes me cringe though.

i don't want it for ff reasons, i just want to watch pro football

Every time I turn it on it seems like it is either Miami cheerleaders or a Ray Lewis retrospective from 2000.

I watch NFL Europe. I sure as heck look forward to pre-season NFL ...

I dont turn my draft on its head because of it ... but I like to watch it ...

I h8 baseball ...

I always miss the Ray Lewis thing...Some of the responses to this thread are absolutely, well freakin' stupid. I think most of the posters here, especially this time of year, are fairly well-educated FOOTBALL fans (not all of us are well-educated). We know that anything we see in a pre-season game cannot be projected for the regular season. If your brain is larger than an average peanut, however; you can tell some things about an offense. The first, second and third preseason games usually feature the first team during the first and second quarter. Studs usually see at least an openning series. During this time its easy to see if the line is cohesive, if the timing is there with the QB/Rec and what the basic checkdowns are if the original play isn't working. I think the later is where a couple of guys picked up an LaMont's penchants for the dumpoff. Pre-season game #3 is big for 3rd and 4th recs and back-up TEs/RBs. These guys usually get extensive work during this game. You can see if they look smooth...have IT. Obviously, watching the last preseason game or the fourth quarter of the preseason games ain't gonna give you much direction. Come on now, it's July: shape up.

The Network is not make or break, but if you have the time to watch it, it can add some ammo to your arsennal come mid-to-late round draft-time or $1-$2 auction time.

Interesting that i see this topic because just today Dish Network added NFL network to the package i have.
:goodposting: I was just thinking the same thing. Weird.
That's probably more a corelation with DirecTvs marketing of the NFL Package. Big media campaign (TV, internet and direct mailers) for the past two weeks on "special package." They want you to sign up for top dollar subscription and get NFL Package included for same rate I believe. Not really much of a deal unless you want all the movie channels, makes you commit to the highest subscription price for a year I think. By the way if cable already offers NFL Network with standard programming and you're getting 3 food channels with dish, shouldn't you have already been provided the NFL Network? Enjoy it for what its worth (it ain't free porn but, hey, I like it once in a while).

 Not really sure what you were saying but do you think this is only for a short time or it was added in the package?

Do a google search for directv and dish network. Read through the directv websites, 3 or 4, and the same 'Deals' will be featured. Obviously the NFL package is a big money maker for Directv. I think it's like a 2yr subscription to the premium plan and you pay only for the NFL package for 4 months. After four months the season ends and you pay the premium price for the next 20 mos. Again this is from memory, and I'm a bit intoxicated right now so, do the seach and find the info. Typically Directv runs some type of promotion for a couple of months before it expires.edit 4: I am sorry for Hijacking of NFL Network thread. NFL Package is subscription where you see multiple Sunday NFL Games. NFL Network is all together a different animal. Package is on Sunday during the season, Network is on 24/7 365 days a year.

 agreed

Eisen is excellent. The forum for the show is a few guys (some who happen to be ex players or current players) sitting around talking footbal. It's a "water cooler" atmosphere and it works well because of Eisen's demeanor. Contrast that to the "juced up",babbling talking heads on ESPN and Eisen and NFL Network win every time.

(unwelcomed)GUEST Welcome.

I love it and think the NFL Channel and R. Eisen will grow Hugh together.

Do I think they could have chose somebody better? Yes. However, I think Eisen was a genius to accept it.

No where but up baby.

they have been doing this since the beginning. all they do is show you clips of each pre season game happening live. if a team is in the red zone, they will show that game untill they score or whatever and then they will go over to another game. they do not show the entire game. just clips. and to tell you the truth, i don't like it at all. it is better then nothing though i guess. nfl network is not even close to an advantage if you ask me. it's just good for junkies that can't get enough football, not fantasy ballers trying to get an edge.
I think you are referring to the show they do live on Sunday? Last season the NFL Network showed every preseason game in its entirety (multiple times) on tape delay throughout the week. I was able to Tivo everyo one and blow through them in about 30 minutes each.

Question? On thanksgivving the NFL channel is running Denver at Kansas City (8 p.m. ET, NFL Network), if you don't have the NFLC will you miss this game?

Rich Eisen is by far the worst host ever. And Terrell Davis and Rod Woodson gotta go, they add absolutely nothing.
I like him
I like those guys too. Much better than Trey Wingo. NFL Network is great, and I do think an advantage. Total Access is a can't miss. There are a ton of great player interviews, some of the best done by other players. Great insight that you don't get with the ESPN product.

As I understand it, you would not get it unless you're in Denver or KC. I think they will use this as leverage to get the cable companies to pick them up.

Absolutely no edge. The channel is enjoyable (at least to me) to watch and they will carry some live regular season games. But unless something changes on it this seasopn - it is of no help for FF in my opinion.

You need the NFL network, unless you're local. They're doing this to force people to add nfl network. No cable company is going to go "nah, nfl games? who needs em!". It's a cash cow.

Oh! This is going to force them big time.

they are getting WAY more information than you are in one hour.

you are gettig just as much info if you get Joe's daily e-mail AND you are getting WAY more relevant FF info.

If you like pro football at all and not just FF, you are a fooll to live w/o the NFL Network.

Period.

(btw - Rich Eisen is the single best football show host on TeeVee).

As I understand it, you would not get it unless you're in Denver or KC.
 local broadcasting rules prevent them from stopping over-air broadcasts in those two cities, but, otherwise, the NFL, and not the broadcast co.s, own those broadcasts.

I agree with both points. Eisen has the dream job and he knows it.
