Considering Hawk has more sacks, an extra FF, and an extra PD compared to Ryans, I would say he has already caught him. Nice turnaround from Hawk. And I am surprised that Ryans has not improved that much as the season progresses, unlike Hawk. For top rookie. With 10 tackles and 2 assists today he is 6 combined behind him.
Actually Sims is losing ground ... He is only 6-12-0 last three weeks with no FF,FR,or PD's.DawnBTVS said:LB Ernie Sims is also closing in on those two as he has 78 tackles in all. Only downside is his lack of big plays aside from 1 PD.
I agree that Ryans is playing as well as Hawk. However for DROY, stats will determine who wins, not who did what based on their opportunities, so even if Ryans plays better than Hawk from here on out, if Hawk beats him in stats, Hawk will be DROY.Rozelle said:Even though they were burnt for some big plays yesterday, Houston's defense has improved. DeMeco is still playing really well. GB D was on the field for 39+ minutes yesterday and I read Barnett was injured. When GB played Buffalo back in week 9 Hawk was 2-2-0 with no FF,FR or PD's vs Ryans 6-0-0 yesterday @ Buffalo. IMO Ryans is playing as well as Hawk, but will most likely have less opportunities. The last 3 weeks GB defense has been on the field 10 minutes more than Houston, I look for this trend to continue. In the end, Hawk's stats should be > Ryans because of more opportunities. Who ends up Defensive ROY will be tight between these two.I'm pullin for Ryans, but when its all said and done, I look for Hawk come out on top.

Good thing I have both Ryans and Hawk locked up for 3 years each in my dynasty league!!!
Yes I agree. But what I was trying to explain (probably not very well) is that if player X is in an awful situation with very little opportunity, but is so great that he's able to get on average 8 tkl 0.5 sack per game (for example), and player Y is in the best situation possible with plenty of opportunities and gets on average 8.5 tkl and 0.6 sack per game, then probably player X has accomplished more relative to his situation, but unfortunately player Y would probably get voted for DROY.More opportunities (time on the field) should translate into greater stats.I agree that Ryans is playing as well as Hawk. I'm with ya. Who votes for ROY anyway, players and coaches?Islander said:Yes I agree. If this is ROY handicapping, add Anderson, Hali and Wimbley and take out Hayes. Really good crop of defensive rookies this season.Sims came back with a strong effort himself after 3 subpar outings with a 10-1 and a 0.5 sack.
Legitimate Shots
DeMeco Ryans: 83-16, 2.5 sacks, and 2 PD
A.J. Hawk: 64-33, 3.5 sacks, 1 FF, 2 FR, and 3 PD
Ernie Sims: 60-29, 0.5 sacks, 1 FF, 1 FR, and 1 PD
Gerald Hayes: 63-13, 1 sack, 2 INT, 2 FR, and 5 PD
Richard Marshall: 46-9, 3 INT, 1 FF, 2 FR, 1 TD, and 12 PD* For the big play ability mostly.
Outside Shots
- Thomas Howard: 59-10 and 2 PD
- Antoine Bethea: 52-19, 1 INT, and 5 PD
- Daniel Bullocks: 46-16, 1 sack, 1 FF, and 3 PD
- Donte Whitner: 42-25, 1 INT, and 3 PD
It's kind of the perfect storm really. It's very rare that a rookie can come in at MLB and run up 100 solo tackles and a solid number of big plays. It's a testament to Ryans' ability to assimilate his superior instincts with the speed of the NFL and stay in position to make bunches of tackles. Even with a stinky supporting cast, not many are able to do that. He's going to smash the solo tackle numbers of Tatupu, Thurman, and Morrison last year and Lewis, Urlacher and Vilma in prior years. He's even on pace to threaten the 120 solo performance Zach Thomas threw on the board in his rookie season.Proably one of the best classes of rookie IDPs we've seen in awhile. However, that 83 next to Ryans really stands out especially considering how pitiful the #1 draft picks play has been on that defense.
Helps to be in the middle and on a bad team.Rozelle said:Hawk was on the field roughly 6 minutes 58 seconds and some 28 plays more than DeMeco this week.Ryans (13-1-0) ... Hawk (10-5-0).

The numbers say so. In many cases, there isn't that much difference between "mike" and "will" anymore, in terms of IDP production. Also ... not much difference between Packer D and Texans D, both ranked about the same. IMO Packer D is worse.Helps to be in the middle and on a bad team.Hawk was on the field roughly 6 minutes 58 seconds and some 28 plays more than DeMeco this week.
Ryans (13-1-0) ... Hawk (10-5-0).
Being on a bad team is normally an argument, because it leads to more defensive plays. But in week #12 this argument does not stand because the Packers D was on the field more than the Texans.
Regarding your other argument of "being in the middle" - well it's not a good timing to say this, because Hawk benefited from N Barnett being out this week.
So we could very well say for Hawk "Helps to have the starting MLB out and the opponent run so many offensive plays" instead of what you said for Ryans.
I think Ryans did more based on his opportunities than Hawk did (in week #12).
You say things so much more nicely than me. Great synopsis and I agree wholeheartedly.Hawk and Ryans are "this generations" Ray Lewis, Junior Seau, Zach Thomas....It's kind of the perfect storm really. 14-1-1 = 14 solos / 1 assist / 1 sackCase closedPlus you forgot the sackHe got me 27.5 fp
Agree 100%.Fantasy-wise, one of the best things about Ryans this year has been his consistency. Unreal for a rookie. At least five solo tackles in every game. Even at their best, tackle monsters like Thomas and Fletcher give you a handful of games every year with 4 or fewer solo tackles.
Okay? ... come on Jean.Ryans is okay.
Yes. When I originally posted this Hawk was gaining, but Ryans pulled away.It all over ... Ryans will be Defensive ROY and should get Pro Bowl consideration. The production of this years rookie crop (across the board) has been amazing! It may be awhile before you see another class as talented as this one.
