how does one measure instinct?and something that cant be over looked is where does hawk end up...coming out DJ and Vilma were ranked pretty closely if i recall....DJ is a fantasy bust because of the situation he landed in...so while hawk is possibly the next great LB I need to see where he lands and also curious who people think have the better football instincts?

Ahem - DJ is only a fantasy bust for the time being. He will return to the elite eventually, count on it.Hawk's football instincts are right there with Vilma and any other LB to come out in recent memory.

Vilma's "smallness" will assure him a place at MLB or WLB (at worst) for his career. Hawk's bigger. Reminds me more of DJ. Could Hawk land in a SLB situation? Anyone have any thoughts/ideas on his game at the NFL level? The fantasy risk with an LB that has all the physical tools including great size is that he's a great fit to play point of attack LB and cover TE's, which is the problem DJ finds himself in currently.

SLBs can still have good IDP numbers as long they are 3 down LBs (look at Marcus Washington) - DJ's problem is that Gold and Wilson keep him off the field on 3rd down. Eventually that will change.I don't see how Hawk is not a 3 down LB, i would draft him as the #1 LB around the teens with confidence.

I tend to agree that D.J. will make some patient owners very happy. I tried to pry him away in my dynasty league and the rat fink owner matched my bid :hot:

Talent is still talent and DJ's got plenty of it.

Agreed. Not being in on the nickle (and obviously then dime too) is a killer and its more than just 3rd down. In the NFL, not being a nickle LB means you are automatically on the sidelines 50% of the time.

Hawk definitely has the coverage skills to play SLB, but I'm assuming his height will not allow him to "man-up" with 6'5" and 6'6" TE's.Much like Vilma, Hawk should be assured a (3-down) WLB or MLB gig at the next level.

AJ is very instinctive. Too much is made of the measurables. Hawk is a football player and should be a very good one at the next level.

Obviously, where he goes and where he plays will determine his fantasy value.

But, as Mike Mayock stated he has a high floor. He's my #1 LB. I have the luxury of drafting after the NFL draft. If I drafted before he would definatley be my first choice.

No doubt, Vilma was drafted in a great situation and it is only looking to get better as the Jets clean house. I can see that defense on the field alot the next couple of years. In some respects, IDP's are alot like real estate...location, location, location.

I dont like the initial comparison at all. Vilma wasnt considered special for his measurables, it was everything else that made him an elite prospect, and now an elite pro. DJ had vilma blown out of the water in his combine numbers IIRC and even though I like both LB's very much talent wise in the NFL, I think vilma is probably the better talent.

Hawk did show great anticipation and instincts for the game, and I'm not trying to take anything away from him, I think he will be a GREAT pro and will make some team picking in the top 10 very happy.

In an interview on tv (Columbus, Ohio station) Hawk said every team he talked with at the combine said they would want him as an inside linebacker.

Interesting.Hawk does not seem to be in the "run-stuffing, head-thumping" mold, but he's pretty dang solid at 6'1" 248 lbs.

Not really what you would call a head thumper, I guess; BUT... he is a run stuffer, AJ has tremendous instincts and really flows to the ball, he also can sift through traffic. I had the opportunity to see many of his OSU games and he always stood out.

Gil Brandt, of NFL.com, reports Ohio State LB A.J. Hawk was timed at 4.49 and 4.42 in the 40 during his Pro Day workout Thursday, March 9. Five NFL head coaches were present, Bill Cowher of the Pittsburgh Steelers, Lovie Smith of the Chicago Bears, Rod Marinelli of the Detroit Lions, Romeo Crennel of the Cleveland Browns and Tom Coughlin of the New York Giants. The players ran outdoors on a strip of extremely fast Astroturf.

OSU runs their proday on a VERY fast track. Everyone cleans house in the 40 at their proday.

Anyway, Hawk is certainly fast enough in the 4.5 - 4.6 range to play any LB position.

Who says it's a fast track? M. Schwaiger ran a 5.9 on that same track last year.....I think he pulled his hammy in the process.RAPTURE
